Students will now have to tap their smart cards to board a smart school bus. This will notify parents of their whereabouts and boarding time instantly. Likewise, a second message will be sent to parents alerting them to the location and time of their child’s drop-off as soon as the students descend.

Additionally, the guardians can use the GPS tracker to locate the bus and the IP cameras installed in the bus to watch their kids’ movements.

Equipped with these smart technologies, 10 smart school buses started their journey on the streets of the port city of Chattogram on Monday.

Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Tofael Islam along with Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman and noted poet and journalist Abul Momen formally inaugurated the bus service at MA Aziz Stadium premises.

“Parents will now be free of worries and anxieties. Meanwhile, traffic congestion will also lessen,” said Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Tofail Islam, before formally starting the first trip with his smartcard.

The first bus made its first trip on Tuesday with 70 students from 12 educational institutions from the gymnasium ground of MA Aziz Stadium in the port city, said Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman.

“Ten more buses are in plans for the students of Patenga-Halishahar areas,” he added.

The buses have been made “smart” by installing GPS trackers, GIS technology, digital attendance-keeping services and IP cameras. Ten such buses will run in full swing from January 10 next year, he said

Educationist Abul Momen urged residents and authorities to maintain the buses properly so that they can be operational for a longer period.

Rashed Mostafa, dean of engineering faculty at Chittagong University; Almas Shimul, additional managing director of GPH Ispat; and additional deputy commissioners Md Abul Kalam Azad (revenue), Abdul Malek (education), and Sadiur Rahim (ICT) were also present at the inaugural event.

The fourth edition of Bangladesh Leather Footwear & Leathergoods International Sourcing Show (BLLISS-2023) will begin on Thursday (12th October) at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in Dhaka.

The international exhibition, from 12-14 October, is going to be jointly organized by the LFMEAB and Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh.

The organisers shared the information through a press conference yesterday in the city’s Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to open this year’s show, the theme of which is: “Possible. In Bangladesh.”

Leading leather manufacturing companies in Bangladesh will showcase their products at the expo.

Over 200 participants from over 15 countries and innumerable visitors from home and abroad are expected.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said that Bangladesh aspired to become a developed country by 2041 and the leather sector, which is the second-largest export earner for the country, plays an integral role in the nation’s march towards making this vision a reality.

Syed Nasim Manzur, president of the LFMEAB, said brands and sourcing companies were re-evaluating their sourcing strategies as the world emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic and global trade flows face major shifts.

Given such circumstances, the expo is expected to attract new buyers, many of whom are looking beyond Vietnam and China and towards countries like Bangladesh, India and Indonesia, he said.

Apart from the show, three dedicated breakout sessions will be held on the sidelines, where more than 200 industry leaders, policymakers, and foreign guests, including students from different universities, will take part, he informed.

Saiful Islam, advisor of the LFMEAB, said by showcasing Bangladesh’s capability and strength in this sector, the show would open the doors to new business opportunities and accelerate trade and investment.

James Ho, managing director of Xin Chang Shoes (BD) said they had already invested $130 million in Bangladesh for four factories, adding that a fifth was on the way.

“Our shoes are the best ambassadors for Bangladesh, showing the world what is possible,” he said.
