In the boys’ handball final, the Department of Politics and Administration won the championship by defeating the faculty of veterinary and animal sciences 3-2.

On the day, a friendly match was held between teachers and staff. GB vice-chancellor Md Abul Hossain distributed prizes to the winners.

The country’s two top archers, Ruman Shana and Diya Siddique, tied the knot on Wednesday.

The Roman-Dia duo, who have been the two biggest names in archery in Bangladesh, are not only staying partners on the track of archery anymore, as their wedding ceremony took place at Asha Community Centre in Nilphamari.

The pair won silver in the recurve mixed event at the World Archery Stage-2 in Switzerland in 2021.

Ruman and Diya also formed a partnership with bow and arrows in hand when they competed in the recurve mixed event in the recently-concluded 14th National Archery at the Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium in Tongi, where they lost in the final and settled for the silver medal.

Bangladesh Archery Federation General Secretary Kazi Razib Uddin Ahmed, Vice President Anisur Rahman, Joint General Secretary Kamrul Islam, and Bangladesh Archery Team’s head coach Martin Friedrich were present during the ceremony, among others.

The Bangladesh Sports Press Association nominated national team cricketer Liton Das, women’s football team forward Sabina Khatun, and recurve women’s team archer Nasrin Akther for Sportsperson of the Year 2022 during a press conference at the BOA auditorium on Thursday.

The awards ceremony, namely the Kool BSPA Awards, will be held at a city hotel on May 28 when the country’s oldest sports journalists’ organisation BSPA, will honour the 19 current and former athletes and sports organisers and organisations in 15 categories.

Liton (cricket) and Sabina (football) have also been nominated, along with sprinter Imranur Rahman (athletics), for the Popular Choice Awards.

Liton was also named as the Men’s cricketer of the year while Nigar Sultana Joty was named as the women’s cricketer of the year. Bashundhara Kings’ Brazilian forward Robson Azevedo da Silva was named as the men’s footballer of the year while Sabina was named as the in the women’s footballer of the year.

In the other categories, Nasrin Akter was named as the archer of the year while Ashraful Islam was named as the hockey player of the year, Imranur Rahman was named as the athlete of the year while national women’s team coach Golam Rabbani Choton was named as the coach of the year.

Table tennis player Nafis Iqbal and shuttler Sifat Ullah Galib were named for the Emerging Athlete of the Year awards. Kustia’s swimming coach, Amirul Islam, has been named for the Grassroots Level Organiser Award, while hurdler Sumita Rani for the Special Honorary Award.

The SAFF Women’s Championship 2022 winning team and the Physically Challenged Cricket team have been named as the Best Successful Teams, while Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation has been named the Best Sports Organisation.

Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and the 100-meter world champion in 2017, has died at the age of 32, her management company and World Athletics said on Wednesday.

Bowie won three gold medals in her career, the first being at the 2016 Olympics in the 4x100m relay. She also secured a silver medal in the 100m and bronze in the 200m in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2017 she then won gold again in the 100m at the World Championships in London, as well as 4x100m relay gold.

Speaking after winning her world title, the Mississippi-born star said: “All I knew was I wanted to give it everything I’ve got after the victory. Am I really world champion?”

A statement from Icon Management read: “We’re devastated to share the very sad news that Tori Bowie has passed away.

“We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright!

“We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends.”

Following the news of her death, numerous tributes have poured out for the former Olympic gold medalist.

Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns segment: In the main event of the show, Cody Rhodes came down to the middle to cut out the final promo ahead of the WrestleMania match against Roman Reigns. Reigns curtailed Rhodes’ mic work by appearing and though did not say much but was able to bring an intimidated look on Cody Rhodes’ face.

South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius who was sentenced to prison in 2016 for killing his partner Reeva Steenkamp, has been refused parole,South African prison authorities and a lawyer for the victim’s family said on Friday.

Pistorius has been in prison since 2016 for the murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

Speaking to reporters Friday, South African Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said the parole board, after receiving clarification from South Africa’s Supreme Court, determined Pistorius has not served the minimum time required to be eligible for parole.

Nxumalo said Pistoriius can again seek parole in August of 2024. In South Africa, prisoners are eligible for parole once they have served at least half their sentence.

Pistorius was convicted of the murder of Steenkamp on February 14, 2013. He shot her multiple times through the bathroom door in his home.

During his trial, which drew extensive international attention, the double-amputee athlete once known as the “Blade Runner” for his prosthetic running gear, said he mistook Steeknamp for a burglar.

Pistorius was originally sentenced to five years in prison. But in 2017, South Africa’s Supreme Court agreed with state prosecutors, who argued the original sentence was too lenient and extended it to 13 years.

The parents of the victim, Barry and June Steenkamp, had opposed Pistorius’ release. The family’s attorney, Tania Koen, told the Reuters news agency that, while the family was relieved, they do not see Friday’s decision as a cause for celebration.

Pistorius was once viewed as a hero in South Africa, where he was a multiple Paralympic champion and made history by running against able-bodied athletes at the 2012 Olympics.

Transgender women will no longer be allowed to compete in female track and field events regardless of their levels of testosterone, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe says.

No female transgender athlete who had gone through male puberty would be permitted to compete in female world ranking competitions from March 31, Coe said.

However, the organization also said it will also form a working group to look at the issue of transgender inclusion for 12 months, suggesting the ban may not be permanent.

In a statement announcing its decision, World Athletics said it consulted with “various stakeholders” in January and February, including member federations, the Global Athletics Coaches Academy and Athletes’ Commission, the International Olympic Committee, and transgender and human rights groups.

“There was little support within the sport” for allowing trans women to compete as long as they maintained testosterone levels below 2.5 nanomoles per liter of blood for two years prior to competition.

The organization announced that equal testosterone levels will be required of female intersex athletes, and effectively bans South African runner Caster Semenya and other cisgender women with naturally elevated testosterone levels from competing unless they are taking hormone-suppressing drugs, which can cause it that they feel sick.

“There are currently no transgender athletes competing internationally in athletics, and consequently no athletics-specific evidence of the impact these athletes would have on the fairness of female competition in athletics,” wrote World Athletics. “Under these circumstances, the Council has decided to prioritize the fairness and integrity of female competition before inclusion.”

World Athletics also acknowledged that the topic needs further research. For this purpose, a working group will be set up to deal with the topic for a year. The group will include “an independent chair, up to three council members, two athletes from the Athletes’ Commission, one transgender athlete, three representatives from the member federations and representatives from the World Athletics Health and Science Department.”

The group will consult specifically with transgender athletes to get their input, and will also review and commission additional research to help fill knowledge gaps about transgender inclusion in women’s sport. The group will then submit a report with recommendations to the World Athletics Council.

“Decisions are always difficult when there are conflicting needs and rights of different groups,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. “We will be guided by the science surrounding physical performance and male advantage that will inevitably develop in the years to come. As more evidence becomes available we will review our position, but we believe the integrity of the female category in athletics is of paramount importance.”

World Athletics’ announcement comes as other sports governing bodies figure out their own trans policies.

Last June, the International Rugby League (IRL) announced a temporary ban on trans women from women’s matches as it conducts investigations and finalizes its inclusion policies. Shortly before the IRL’s announcement, FIFA and World Aquatics (formerly FINA) both announced bans on trans athletes from women’s events.

That same month, the German Football Association – Deutscher Fußball-Bund eV (DFB) – announced rules that would allow trans, intersex and non-binary players to choose whether to play on men’s or women’s soccer teams. The following month, British Triathlon announced its plan to force trans women and non-binary athletes to compete alongside cis men in an “open” category.

In August 2022, the World Boxing Council banned transboxers from fighting cisgender opponents. The organization’s president, Mauricio Sulaiman, announced the council’s intention to create separate sections just for trans men and trans women if there is enough interest among trans boxers.

In the US, Republicans have drafted numerous bills nationwide that would ban trans women from competing on girls’ and women’s teams. Despite this, 176 female professional athletes signed a Court Amicus Brief in support of allowing trans women to play on sports teams that conform to their gender identity.

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik, the power couple of the sports world, reportedly broke up recently.

Reports have surfaced suggesting that tennis prodigy Sania Mirza and her husband Shoaib Malik have divorced.

Mirza and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik are co-parenting their son Izhaan Mirza Malik.

Mirza and Malik have not commented on the subject. Mirza’s team declined media request for comment.

Mirza and Malik aren’t Instagram followers anymore. Mirza’s cryptic posts, captions, and stories fueled divorce rumors.

Chess grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann may have cheated more than 100 times, according to new research published by a leading chess website.

“Overall, we have found that Hans has likely cheated in more than 100 online chess games, including several prize money events. He was already 17 when he likely cheated in some of these matches and games. He was also streaming in 25 of these games,” online platform Chess.com said in a statement.

According to the full investigation, which was made public on Tuesday, Niemann, currently 19 years old, likely cheated as recently as 2020.

The report added that Niemann’s improvement in the game has been statistically extraordinary.

“Looking purely at rating, Hans should be classified as a member of this group of top young players. While we don’t doubt that Hans is a talented player, we note that his results are statistically extraordinary,” it added.

Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup in the US on Sept. 5, following his surprise defeat to Niemann, who was a home favorite.

Five-time world champ Carlsen abruptly quit the event and later suggested that the 19-year-old Niemann had cheated.

Niemann has denied any wrongdoing in an in-person game, though admitted to cheating in non-competitive online clashes when he was younger.
