Slow poisoning in sub-jail
Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil MP yesterday echoed the growing demand for investigation and trial of those who were involved in the conspiracy to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by slow poising while she was lodged in a sub-jail when the “evil force” – military-backed caretaker government -was in power. Jalil’s statement added a powerful new dimension to the demand for unearthing the disturbing and vicious attempt.
Deputy leader of the House and senior Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury was the first to make the startling disclosure that while in detention, was Hasina was served poisoned food to kill her.Her statement was followed by another statement by Hasina’s one time personal physician and now her adviser Professor Dr Modasser Ali who further elaborated it saying that Hasina was administered arsenic, which had the effect of slow poisoning.
Professor Modasser Ali also demanded a probe and punishment of those who were in position of power including the IG and DIG of prisons.
Although the present government has not officially reacted to these allegations ipso facto against the past caretaker government, there is a strong feeling among a section of the Awami League leadership that an attempt was indeed made to ‘eliminate’ Hasina from politics, which was evidently “minus one” formula as distinct from the generally perceived “minus two” formula.
The government has so far maintained a studied silence over the matter and has not indicated whether or not the suspects in the poisoning conspiracy would be proceeded against under the law. But how long can the government remain silent over sustained demand from the prime minister’s own party leaders for investigation and punishment remains to be seen.
Jalil’s comments to journalists yesterday were explicit. He said, ” They wanted to kill my leader by poisoning her food when she was in Jail.”
The senior leader said such activities cannot be tolerated in any way. ” I think there should be an investigation into the matter expeditiously. Those who were involved in such a conspiracy should be identified through investigation and those who were responsible should be awarded exemplary punishment so that no evil force can ever dare to fulfil their ill motive to remove political leaders in such a way in future,” Jalil said.
Replying to a query on the alleged poisoning of food served to the two leaders in jail- Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia-, Jalil said that they wanted to remove the two leaders, “including our leader Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina”, from politics and tried to establish a new trend and leadership in politics.” Jalil added that ” As part of that design they wanted to kill my leader by poisoning her food.”
