Amid the recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela that usually begins on the first day of the month of February, has deffered for at least two weeks.
State minister for culture KM Khalid told media that due to the recent spike of Covid cases, the fair has been postponed till February 14.
Though the fair starts on February 1 every year, the tradition was broken last year.
It started on March 18 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The fair also ended early – on April 12, instead of April 14 — after the government enforced a countrywide lockdown around that time.
This year the Bangla Academy authority though has taken preparations to open the fair from the first day of February, the decision of postponing the fair for two weeks has been taken in line with an 11-point directive issued by the government from January 13 to stem the spread of Omicron, a new variant of the Covid-19.
