AL ahead with 27, BNP 24 in Dhaka Div

Kaliakoir polls suspended, Ghatail results withheld
Candidates backed by the ruling Awami League won 27 posts of municipal mayor while candidates supported by its arch rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party trailed closely behind securing 24 posts of mayor in Dhaka division in the third spell of the local polls on Monday. Elections to 63 municipalities in Dhaka division were held on Monday amid sporadic incidents of clashes and attacks on polling centres at places.
Results of two municipalities could not be announced as polling in eight out of 28 centres of Kaliakoir municipality in Gazipur was suspended and results of Ghatail in Tangail were withheld till 2:00am on Tuesday.
Four independent candidates were unofficially elected mayors while five rebel candidates from Awami League and one from BNP also won the mayoral polls.
The staggered local elections to 243 out of 310 municipalities across the country began on Wednesday. The municipalities in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions are set to go to polls today.
In the first two phases of the polls, AL-backed candidates won 42 mayoral posts in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal divisions while BNP-backed candidates secured 47 posts in the four divisions.
Following are unofficial results of the Monday’s municipal polls in Dhaka Division:
Shariatpur: At Naria AL-backed Haider Ali (7238 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; BNP-backed Mohammad Ali (3738) lost. At Bhedarganj, rebel AL candidate Abdul Mannan (1720) defeated AL-backed Abdul Hai Master (1337).  At Damudya, AL-backed Humayun Kabir (2994) defeated rebel AL candidate Rezaul Karim (2326).
Madaripur: At Kalkini, rebel AL candidate Enayet Hossain (8624) was unofficially elected mayor; AL-backed Khairul Alam (7829) lost. At Shibchar, AL-backed Abdul Latif Molla (9553) defeated BNP-backed Shahadat Hossain Shafik (779).
Gopalganj: At Gopalganj, AL-backed Reazul Huq Sikder Raju (7489) was unofficially elected mayor, Musfiqul Rahman Liton (3595) of the same party lost. At Tungipara, AL-backed Md Ilias Hossain (2448) defeated Forkan Biswas (1618) of the same party. At Kotalipara, AL-backed HM Oahidul Islam (1570) defeated BNP-backed Kamal Hossain (1108).
Netrakona: At Netrakona, AL-backed Prosanta Roy (15536) was unofficially elected mayor; Matiur Rahman (13031) of the same party lost.At Mohanganj, BNP-backed Mahbubunnabi Sheikh (5494) defeated rebel AL candidate Latifur Rahman Ratan (3891). At Durgapur, AL-backed SM Joynal (3679) defeated rebel AL candidate Kamal Pasa (2588). At Kendua, AL-backed Abdul Huq Bhuiyan (5759) defeated BNP-backed Manjur Rahman Khandaker (3715).
Manikganj: At Singair, BNP-backed Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan Joy (6213) was unofficially elected mayor; AL-backed Mir Mohammad Shahjahan (5737) lost.
Tangail: At Dhanbari, AL-backed Monjurul Islam Tapan (7193) was unofficially elected mayor; BNP-backed SMA Sobhan (6379) lost.At Sakhipur, AL-backed Abu Hanif Azad (4662) defeated Krishak Sramik Janata League-backed Sanwar Hossain Sajib (4609). At Madhupur, BNP-backed Sarker Shahid (14671) defeated AL-supported Sarwar Alam Khan Abu (9134). At Gopalpur, BNP-backed Jahangir Alam Rubel (9062) defeated AL-backed Rakibul Huq Sana(7877). At Bhuapur, AL-backed Masudul Huq Masud (6497) defeated BNP-backed Jahangir Hossain (2726). At Kalihati, AL-backed Ansar Ali (9825) defeated BNP-backed Ali Akbar Jabbar (9021). Mymensingh: At Phulpur, AL-backed Md Shahjahan (3534) defeated BNP’s Aminul Huq (3447). At Trishal, AL-backed ABM Anisuzzaman (6164) defeated BNP-backed Aminul Islam (4893). At Muktagachha, rebel AL candidate Abdul Hai Akond (8523) defeated BNP-backed Mansurur Rahman Khan Rejun (5984). At Gauripur, rebel AL candidate Syed Rafikul Islam (4399) defeated AL-backed Shafikul Islam Hobi (3300), At Ishwarganj, AL-backed Habibur Rahman (6479) defeated independent candidate Abdus Sattar (3129), At Nandail, BNP-backed Azizul Islam Pikul (7950) defeated AL’s Rafiquddin Bhuiyan (3824). At Bhaluka, AL-backed AKM Mesbahuddin Quaiyum (7798) defeated BNP’s Alhaj Mafizuddin Sarkar (6,659). At Gafargaon, rebel AL candidate Kaiser Ahmed (4886) defeated another AL rebel FM Iqbal Hossain Sumon (4574). At Mymensingh, AL-backed Ekramul Huq (53359) defeated BNP-backed Shafiqul Islam (51001).
Sherpur: At Shribardi, BNP-backed Abdul Hakim (4145) defeated rebel AL candidate Abu Sayeed (3280.), At Nalitabari, BNP-backed Anwar Hossain (9833) defeated AL-backed Abdul Halim Ukil (4117). At Sherpur, AL-backed Humayun Kabir Roman (22423) defeated BNP-backed Abdur Razzak Ashish (21577). At Nakla, BNP-backed Mokhlesur Rahman Tara (4152) defeated rebel AL candidate Monir Hossain Monir (3341).
Narsingdi: At Manohardi, AL-backed Alfaz Uddin (3741 votes) was unofficially elected mayor; rebel AL candidate Kafil Uddin (2700) lost. At At Narsingdi, AL-backed Lokman Hossain defeated rebel AL candidate Abdul Matin Sarker by a big margin.
Faridpur: At Nagarkanda, BNP-backed SM Zahid (1988) defeated rebel AL candidate Siddiqul Alam Bachchu (1218). At Boalmari, BNP-backed Abdus Sakur Sheikh (7138) defeated AL-backed Hasanuzzman Mukul (4964). At Faridpur, independent candidate Mahtab Ali Methu (18873) defeated BNP-backed AFM Qaiyum Jongi (16943).
 Kishoreganj: At Katiyadi, BNP-backed Tofazzal Hossain Khan Dilip (9770) defeated AL-backed Sawkat Osman. At Kuliarchar, AL-backed Abul Hossain Kajol (9304) beat BNP-backed Nurul Millad (6420). At Hossainpur, BNP-backed Mahbubur Rahman (5117) defeated AL-backed Abdul Qayum (2118). At Karimganj, AL-backed Abdul Qayum (3593) defeated rebel AL candidate Kamrul Islam (2857). Jamalpur: At Madarganj, BNP-backed Mosharrof Hossain Lemon (8434) defeated AL-backed Mirza Golam Kibria (6556). At Melandah, BNP-backed Didar Pasha (7959) defeated Rafiqul Islam (4830) of the same party. At Islampur, AL-backed Abdul Kader Sheikh (7316) defeated BNP-backed Joynal Abedin (6090). At Jamalpur, BNP-backed Shah Md Wares Ali (41410) defeated AL-backed Amanat Ullah Akash (22482). At Sarishabari, BNP-backed Faizul Kabir Talukder (15968) defeated AL-backed Munir Uddin (7966). Narayanganj: At Sonargaon, BNP-backed Sadekur Rahman (6931) was unofficially elected mayor; AL-backed Gazi Mujibur Rahman (5876) lost. At Tarab, BNP-backed Shafikul Islam Chowdhury (23717) defeated AL-backed Shawkat Ali (16727).
Rajbari: At Rajbari, BNP-backed Tofazzal Hossain Mia (11878) defeated AL-backed Mohammad Ali Chowdhury (9135). At Goalanda, independent Sheikh Mohammad Nizam (4577) defeated BNP-backed Rezaul Hassan Idris (3004). At Pangsha, AL-backed Wajed Ali Master (8651) defeated BNP-backed Habibur Rahman Raja (6012).
Munshiganj: At Munshiganj, BNP-backed AKM Iradat Manu (12209) defeated rebel AL candidate Alhaj Mohammad Faisal Bipob (10844). At Mirkadim, independent candidate Shahinul Islam Shaheen (9685) defeated BNP-backed Nizanur Rahman Mizan (6101).
Gazipur: At Kaliakoir results of 20 out 28 centres (polling in 8 centres suspended due to disturbances), BNP-backed Md Mojibur Rahman (21770), was leading the polls against
