The 4th convocation of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) will be held on the university campus today.
Chancellor of the university president Md Zillur Rahman will preside over the function and hand over certificates and medals to the students, reports The Independent
Chief justice Mohammed Tafazzal Islam will address the convocation as a convocation speaker.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, chairman of the University Grants Commission, Prof Nazrul Islam, VC of the University Dr. Sharif Enamul Kabir will also deliver speeches on the occasion.
The inaugural session of the convocation will be held between 10.30am and 1pm at the special pavilion on the university’s central field.
Some 6000 guests including intellectuals, litterateurs, vice-chancellors of different universities, political leaders, diplomats of foreign countries based in Dhaka and graduates of the university are expected to attend the convocation.
Nearly 3,902 PhD, MPhil, masters and honours holders will be awarded certificates at the convocation ceremony.
Sixteen among them will be given gold medal for their outstanding academic performances. Of the 16, four each will receive Mufassil Uddin Ahmed Trust Fund and Dr Surat Ali Khan medal, two Sharfuddin Ahmed medal and six Asadul Kabir medal.
Meanwhile, all preparations have been completed in connection with the convocation. The university has been tastefully decorated and security tightened.
A rehearsal for members of the senate, syndicate and academic council was held at the university’s Shaheed Minar yesterday afternoon.
Since the university’s establishment on February 5, 1997, three convocations were earlier on February 5, 1997, February 17, 2001 and February 2, 2006.
Presently around 13,000 students are on the roll of the university having five faculties and two institutes. It is being manned by 552 teachers, 221 officers, 565 third-grade and 701 fourth-grade employees.
