Record-breaking Rabada sinks Tigers

South Africa’s pace bowler Kagiso Rabada became the second bowler to claim a hat-trick on his one-day international debut as Bangladesh crumbled in the opening ODI against the visitors in Dhaka on Friday. Rabada, who picked 6-16, joined Taijul Islam as the debutant-on- hat trick, leaving the hosts folded for 160 in 36.3 overs in the rain-shortened ODI at Sher-e Bangla National Stadium.
Rabada, who only made his Twenty20 debut in 2014 against Australia, began his demolition act in the fourth over of the play when he uprooted the off-stump of opener Tamim Iqbal – but the greater drama was yet to come.
Rabada removed Liton Kumar with his next ball when the latter managed to find Farhaan Behardien at midwicket on his attempt to flick an angling delivery of the pacer.
Rabada silenced the crowd at SBNS after trapping Mahmudullah leg before with his last delivery of the over, a good length ball that sealed his name in record book.
The 20-year old pacer later claimed the wicket of other opener Soumya Sarkar and then added two more wickets to his tally to record the best ever figure on ODI debut.
He bettered the record of West Indies’ Fidel Edwards, who claimed 6-22 against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2003.
In the process, Rabada repaid the faith of his team management as they handed him with the opportunity by resting seasoned Morne Morkel to prove his worth against the Tigers.
Rabada was the highest wicket taker in the Under-19 World Cup 2014 guiding his team to their championship that gave an indication about his enormous talent.
His 6-25 against Australia in the Under-19 World Cup semi-final is the prime example of his talent that made him the youngest player to win a professional contact in South Africa.
While everyone was talking about the South African spinners as they proved to be the deciding factor in the preceding Twenty20 series, the Tigers hardly looked to have done enough home work against their pacers.
They were particularly ill-equipped against Rabada, who brought surprise element, akin to Mustafizur Rahman, who sank India in Bangladesh’s previous ODI series.
Rabada, who is known for his raw pace and well-directed aggression looked to have enjoyed his debut as he ripped the heart out of Bangladesh’s batting.
Tigers are known to have a lot of shortcomings against quality fast bowling and Rabada opted not to show any mercy.
That enabled him with a place with illustrious pace man Allan Donald, the only other South African to claim five-wicket on debut when he pounded India with 5-29 at Kolkata in 1991.
