Amber Heard will pay Johnny Depp $1m (£820,000) to resolve their defamation lawsuit, reports BBC quoting Mr. Depp’s lawyers.

In a high-profile case this spring, the former couple fought.

In June, a Virginia jury found that Ms Heard’s essay defamed Mr Depp, 59.

Announcing the settlement earlier on Monday, Ms Heard, 36, said the decision was “not an act of concession”.

Earlier this month, she filed an appeal in the case, asking for the jury’s verdict to be reversed or for a new trial entirely.

But in her statement on Monday, the Aquaman actress said she had made the choice to settle “having lost faith in the American legal system”.

“Even if my US appeal is successful, the best outcome would be a retrial,” she said. “I simply cannot go through that.”

In a 2018 Washington Post op-ed, his ex-wife called herself a “public figure representing domestic abuse” without naming Mr. Depp. He sued her for defamation. Ms Heard countersued.

People all across the world watched the six-week televised trial. The couple got a divorce in 2017, but when they talked about their five-year relationship, they told very different stories. Both accused the other of bad behavior and violence. Mr. Depp strongly denied what his ex-wife said in court, which was that he had hurt her emotionally, physically, and sexually.

The jury awarded $15m (£12m) to Mr. Depp.

Legal experts were astonished by the ruling, especially since Mr. Depp lost a similar case in the UK two years earlier.

Amber Heard, in her first post-verdict interview, said she doesn’t blame the jury. The actress also opened up about the hate and vitriol she had to go through on social media during her defamation trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp, which the actress called “unfair”.
The intense legal battle between the two Hollywood actors, which was live-streamed to millions, went on for six weeks with the US jury eventually awarding Depp over $10 million in damages and $2 million to Heard, who had counter-sued.
During the trial, social media was flooded with posts and opinions, mostly favouring Depp and criticising Heard. While Depp emerged as the winner on the Internet before the trial was even over, Heard was massively trolled and was a subject of hate and threats.
Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, had said that her client wants to appeal the verdict while accusing Depp’s legal team of working to “demonise” the actress.
“How could they make a judgement, how could they not come to that conclusion?” Heard told NBC in her first interview since the verdict. “I don’t blame them. I actually understand he’s a beloved character. And people feel they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.”
Depp sued Heard for $50 million over an op-ed she wrote in December 2018 where she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” His lawyers said he was defamed by the article even though it never mentioned his name. The actress counter-sued for $100 million.
The trial disclosed lurid and intimate details about the celebrities’ private lives.
“I don’t presume the average person should know those things,” Heard said adding that though she doesn’t take it personally, the social media representation was “unfair”.
“And so I don’t take it personally. But even somebody who is sure I’m deserving of all this hate and vitriol, even if you think that I’m lying, you still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation,” she said.
“You cannot tell me that you think that this has been fair,” the 36-year-old actress said in a clip from the interview, which airs in full on NBC News’ Dateline on Friday.

Jurors in Virginia on Wednesday ruled in favour of Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, in the libel case brought by the actor against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp had filed a $50 million (€47 million) lawsuit against Heard, arguing that she defamed him in an op-ed for the Washington Post. Jury members found Depp should be awarded more than $10 million (€9.3 million) in damages.
However, the jury also found in favour Heard in some aspects of her $100 million (€93.8 million) counterclaim which said she was defamed by Depp’s lawyer when he called her abuse allegations a hoax. The jury ruled that Heard should receive $2 million (€1.8 million).
In the article, written in 2018, Heard described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse”, but did not include Depp’s name.
The jury had to decide if two particular passages of the article and the headline were defamatory. Because Depp is a public figure, Heard could only be found guilty if it was decided that she knew what she wrote was false.
Heard’s lawyers had told the jury that the case should fail if Heard suffered even one incident of abuse.
Depp, who has starred in blockbuster movies including the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films and the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, said he never struck Heard or any woman, and that Heard’s allegations cost him “everything.”
Heard’s attorneys have argued that she told the truth and that her opinion was protected as free speech under the US Constitution’s First Amendment.
“The jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled,” Depp who wasn’t in court for the verdict, said in a statement.
The actor said that the allegations made against him had triggered “an endless barrage of hateful content” which had a “seismic” impact on his life and career.
His statement continued: “I hope that my quest to have the truth be told will have helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation, and that those supporting them never give up.” “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun,” he added.
Amber Heard said that the disappointment she felt after the verdict was “beyond words”.
“I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence and sway of my ex-husband,” she wrote in a statement.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women,” she added.
“It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.”

Amber Heard says she felt humiliated and had faced hundreds of daily death threats after testifying at Johnny Depp’s trial against her.
Speaking on the final day of the trial before closing statements, the actress said: “Perhaps it’s easy to forget, but I am a human being.”
Mr Depp, 58, is suing Ms Heard, 36, over an article she wrote in which she said she was the victim of abuse.
He has repeatedly denied her claims.
Over more than a month of testimony, jurors have been presented with starkly different versions of incidents that took place throughout the couple’s troubled two years together.
Both actors accuse the other of being the aggressor in the relationship and have called witnesses to testify on their behalf. A number of the witnesses called by Mr Depp’s team have directly contradicted Ms Heard’s claims.
“I know how many people will come out and say whatever for him,” Ms Heard said in court on Thursday. “That’s his power. That’s why I wrote the op-ed. I was speaking to that phenomenon.”
Ms Heard’s testimony on Wednesday also led to a tense exchange with Camille Vasquez – Mr Depp’s now viral lawyer – over an image of spilled wine. It is one of several pictures Ms Heard has presented, allegedly from a huge fight the couple had in 2016 which ended with Mr Depp assaulting her.
At one point, Ms Heard turned to jurors and claimed the photos had been redacted or edited by Mr Depp’s lawyers to benefit her ex-husband’s case.
“I’d appreciate if you wouldn’t be making arguments to the jury,” Ms Vasquez said sternly. “I didn’t ask you about anything.”
Throughout her testimony, Ms Heard repeatedly denied accusations she was lying or misled jurors during the trial.
Her testimony, she added, had led to “hundreds” of death threats on a daily basis and forced her to “relive the trauma” of her marriage.
“This is horrible… this is humiliating for any human being to go through and perhaps it’s easy to forget, but I am a human being,” she said. “As I stand here today, I can’t have a career. I can’t even have people associate with me because of the threats and the attacks that they will have to endure.”
Mr Depp is suing Ms Heard for $50m (£40m) for a 2018 comment article she wrote in the Washington Post in which she said she was the victim of abuse.
While he wasn’t named, his attorneys have said it “incalculably” damaged his career. She has countersued him for $100m.
Closing arguments will begin on Friday, followed by jury deliberations.
