A late surge in rainfall due to a cyclonic storm, Mahasen followed by a depression in the Bay of Bengal left the country wet by 91 per cent above average rainfall in May,
Met Office sources said on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the south western monsoon winds bringing the rainy season in the country have remained anchored off the Myamar coastal town of Akyab for the past two days. It may move towards Chittagong coast in another two to three days and spread its wings over the country by June 5-7, a bit earlier than its normal scheduled arrival by June 10.
When it spread across the country, the current spell of pre-monsoon heat with high humidity is likely to be washed away by rains, a senior meteorologist said.
The high humidity with the heat prevailing in the country was due to the approaching monsoon, he said.
After two days of windy and wet weather, heat with humidity started to make life difficult on Saturday with Tangail and Dhaka experiencing 34.6 highest maximum temperature in the country.
The humidity was high in the air in Dhaka with 81 per cent in the morning and 72 per cent in the evening which was why the day was so muggy, the meteorologist said.
The situation is likely to be the same on Sunday and onwards until the monsoon rains cool the temperature, he added.
