Veteran actress Anwara will act opposite seasoned actor Razzak in an upcoming film. Directed by Safi Uddin Safi, the artiste duo will be featured in the film “Purna Doirgha Prem Kahini”, written by Rumman Rashid Khan.
Shooting for the film started on September 26 in Dhaka.
“My long cherished dream is going to come true. I acted twice with Razzak bhai, but not exactly opposite him. Shabana and Kabori were the other co-artistes in the films ‘Gariber Meye’ and ‘Bashori’ respectively,” said Anwara.
“I was excited to play a central role in the film ‘Shubhoda’, directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam, because Razzak bhai was in the film. However, the late actor Golam Mostafa acted opposite me in the film. Anyway, I am thrilled to act opposite Razzak bhai after so many years,” Anwara added.
“Anwara and I will enact the roles of grandparents of the protagonist in ‘Purna Doirgha Prem Kahini’. Anwana is certainly an accomplished actress,” said Razzak.
Joya Ahsan and Shakib Khan play the lead roles in the film. The cast also includes Diti, Subrata, Arefin Shubho and Saju Khadem.

Recently demised iconic author-playwright-film director Humayun Ahmed’s last film Ghetu Putro Kamola will be released on Friday in three top cinemas in Dhaka Balaka and Star Cineplex in Dhaka, according to a press release.
Produced by Impress Telefilm, the most awaiting film of the year will also be released outside of Dhaka very soon. Last May a special show of Ghetu Putra Kamola was held at the Star Cineplex in presence of Humayun Ahmed and his family and peers.
Ghetu Putro Kamola features Ghetu songs, a musical trend which was prevalent in Habiganj some 150 years ago.
Ghetu songs were known for their traditional tunes, but what really set them apart were the ghetu performers.
Adolescent boy actors of the performing art form, popularly known as ‘Ghetu Putra,’ dressed as girls, used to entertain higher class men through singing and dancing.
The film was shot in the Haor areas of Hobibganj district.
Mamun plays the titular role of the film which has an attractive cast of Tarik Anam Khan, Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Munmun Ahmed, Tamalika Karmakar, Pran Roy, baul singer Kuddus Boyati and many others. Mahfuzur Rahman Khan is the cinematographer of the film edited by Chhalim Ullah Chhali. Maqsud jamil Mintoo and S I Tutul are the music directors of the film while Emon Saha is the director of background music. Earlier, the soundtrack of the movie was released.

Shakib Khan dominates market
Movie lovers still need to wait to get the final list of the Eid movies as several background calculations are going on among the producers and exhibitors, sources said.
The Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association has given clearance to six movies for release although the organisation initially planned to give permission to four movies with hopes that Eid movies make good profit set against the slumped trade market.
Movies those got permission from BFPDA are Most Welcome, Se Amar Mon Kerechhey, My Name is Sultan, Dhakar King, Khodar Porey Maa and Tumi Asbe Bole.
Sources confirmed that the final decision depends on the producers’ influence on the exhibitors.
Most Welcome and Tumi Asbe Bole have been finalised, confirmed the sources. But, rest of the movies featuring Dhallywood heartthrob Shakib Khan are in dilemma.
‘It has happened for Shakib Khan’s very lofty demand. If all of his four movies get release simultaneously, a huge competition may arise among those movies. For which even a big budget movie might have to face loss,’ a source at Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association told New Age.
‘Producers of Most Welcome and Tumi Asbe Bole have taken the number of prints of their respective movies as per the demand of the cinema owners,’ the source added.
Big budget romantic action movie Most Welcome, directed by Ananya Mamun features Ananta, Barsha Sohel Rana Bappa Raj and Misha Sawdagor. Moreover, Bollywood star Sneha Ullal also performs in the movie.
Young director Ashrafur Rahman’s romantic movie Tumi Ashbe Boley, on the other hand, features Nirob, Nipun and Miju Ahmed.
Shakib starred four movies almost have the same storyline. The hero character dominating action movies basically feature conventional Dhallywwod chemistry: a superman like hero fights against the evils and the “heroine” appears in romantic and emotional scenes only.
Directed by FI Manik, My Name is Sultan features Shakib Khan and TV actress Tinni.
Shafiuddin Shafi’s action movie Dhakar King features popular Dhallyhood duo Shakib-Apu. Nipun, Misha Sawdagor and others also perform in the movie.
Shaheen Suman’s family drama Khodar Porey Maa also features Shakib Khan, Sahara and Misha Sawdagor.
Shakib Khan and Sahara also play the lead characters in Sohanur Rahman Sohan’s romantic action movie Se Amar Mon Kerechhe.
Sources confirmed that the producers of all of Shakib starred movies have taken around fifty prints to grab the Eid market.
But, hero Shakib Khan does not want that more than two movies acted by him get release considering a huge competition among these movies.
Another interesting aspect of this year’s Eid market is the competition between Apu Biswas and Sahara since both of them are co-actors with the Dhaliwood heartthrob.
Besides these mainstream movies, Eid makers can also enjoy world premiere of Atmadan and Hathat Sedin on channel-i during the Eid.

She will be paired with the Dhallywood heartthrob Shakib Khan in a movie and will also play led roles in three other movies. In an interview with New Age, Nipun said, ‘ I hope audience will love all my four movies offering different tastes.’
Nipun hopes that all her films will gain audience acclaims. ‘I have done a lot of had works for those films. I believe these films will receive the same response as my previous films received,’ Nipun said.
‘I’ll be paired with Shakib Khan in Shafiuddin Shafi’s action movie Dhakar King. I wish it will remain on the top chart in the Eid. Ashraful Islam’s romantic movie Tumi Ashbey Boley Bhalobashbey Boley, in which I’m paired with Nirob, will also be a hit,’ Nipun added.
According to Nipun Dhallywood may get a new chemistry in terms of box office hit after the release of Tumi Ashbey Boley Bhalobashbey Boley. ‘The romantic movie will feature some quality songs in some fantastic locations. I hope the audience will really love those,’ she said. Nipun, however, loves to face challenges working in films featuring different subject matters.
Nipun claims that audience will find her in a challenging role in Shahzahan Chowdhuy’s movie Atyadan based on the war of independence. ‘I’m really honoured acting in a movie based on the war. Victor Banerjee may have wowed critics as a versatile actor but believe it or not he does not watch his movies as he “hates to look” at himself on screen.
“I don’t see any of my movies,” Banerjee told media persons here on Sunday last. The two exceptions, he mentioned, were maestro Satyajit Ray’s “Gharey Bairey”, in which he puts up a stupendous performance in the role of Nikhilesh, and Hollywood film “Hullabaloo Over Georgie and Bonnie’s Pictures”.
The 66-year-old actor, who was here for the Osian’s film festival, said it was Ray who had goaded him to watch “Gharey Bairey” at Gorky Sadan in Kolkata and his co-star in the Hollywood film Peggy Ashcroft who had persuaded him to buy two tickets in London and watch it along with her.
Two films featuring Banerjee, including Rubaiyat Hossain’s “Meherjaan” and an Assamese movie, are set to be screened in the Osian’s festival now on here.
It was in keeping with his revulsion to watch himself on the screen that he gave a miss to the world premiere of the Assamese film, Bidyut Kotoky’s “Ekhon Nodir Nedekha Xipaare”, at Osian’s festival on Saturday night.
“I hate to look at myself on screen. I don’t want to end up confused thinking which side of my face look better before the camera,” he reasoned.
The actor, who has performed with aplomb with several Tollywood commercial films with aplomb besides earning critical acclaim for his roles in Shyam Benegal’s “Kaliyug” and David Lean’s “A Passage to India”, said the toughest time in his career spanning for over three decades was during the shooting of Ray’s “Shatranj Ke Khiladi”.
“My knowledge of Urdu was minimal and I lied that I knew the language well. Later, with the help of Urdu-speaking experts, I was able to speak my lines,” he recalled.

Besides Sen, the government awarded 15 other eminent persons in the sports and cultural world with Banga-Bibhusan and Banga-Bhusan.
‘This day (May 20) is a special day to me and I shall keep on conferring this highest award of the state government to such eminent personalities in the cultural world every year. They are our inspiration,’ Banerjee said.

In her 14-year career, movie actress Purnima has starred in countless popular films. However, she bagged her first ever National Film Award this year.
In a recent interview Purnima expressed her elation at the achievement and revealed her thoughts and future plans on the professional front.
What is your reaction after receiving the National Film Award for the first time?
Purnima: This is my first National Film Award. I was awarded for my performance in the 2010 film “Ora Amake Bhalo Hotey Dilo Na”. I believe my hard work has finally paid off. Many of my contemporaries had already received the award. Although I was yet to receive the official recognition, I believed that I had the necessary skills and popularity to be considered as a contender. It’s a reason for great joy and I feel honoured.
Tell us about the movie that brought you the award.
Purnima: “Ora Amake Bhalo Hote Dilo Na” was directed by Kazi Hayat. The storyline was very powerful. I played the role of a substance abuser in the film. I received much applause after the release of the movie. Overall it was a very good film. I’m grateful to all those who were involved in the film.
What challenges did you face while portraying the role of a drug addict?
Purnima: As artistes, we often have to struggle to play bold characters. But it also gives us a different kind of pleasure. The director helped me talk to some addicts to get an insight into the role. It was a very hard role to portray and presented many challenges. But the hard work seems nothing now, after winning the award.
You have starred in several movies. Name some of the ones that were liked by the audiences and critics alike.
Purnima: Among all the movies some have influenced me more than others. One of those movies was “Mon-er Majhe Tumi”. It was one of the movies that acquired unprecedented popularity among the viewers. Still people sing the tunes from the movie. I also acted in “Shubha” — a movie based on a Tagore story. I played the eponymous role. There are many other movies that are close to my heart.
How did your initiation into films happen?
Purnima: My first movie was in 1998 — Zakir Hossain Raju’s “Ei Jibon Tomar Amar”. Eventually I became more and more involved with the celluloid and it became my life and profession.
You’ve also done TV plays and modelling?
Purnima: Yes. I did some TVCs which became quite popular. I also continue to do occasional TV plays. Sometimes even when I don’t want to, I have to keep requests from the directors.
What movies are you shooting for now?
Purnima: I’m doing an Iftekhar Ahmed Fahmi movie titled “To Be Continued” where I star opposite singer Tahsan. I’m also doing “Lobhe Paap Paape Mrityu” directed by Sohanur Rahman Sohan, along with Amin Khan and Riaz. Model and TV star Arfin Shuvo is acting opposite me in Mohammad Mustafa Kamal Raj’s “Chhaya Chhobi”.
What are your hopes for your new films?
Purnima: I’m very enthusiastic about all of them. I’m hoping that viewers will see different Purnimas in these movies. The three movies — all with unique stories — will hopefully be released within this year.

The Baul way of life under the microscope
Question: Who is a Baul? Answer: A Baul is an artiste who sings songs of Lalon as well as other traditional and devotional rural songs. A simple and, frankly, quite typical answer to a question that can possibly stir up a deep discussion. To use the aforementioned overly simplistic description to define Bauls to a group of foreigners would be unjust. To define Bauls, one must understand the Baul way of life and devotion, as well as their way of searching the Divine within. A Baul is more than just a singer.
Hasibur Reza Kallol’s “Andho Nirangom” — the latest film on the philosophy of Fakir Lalon Shai and the lives of contemporary Bauls — starts with trying to define Bauls. An individual from a group of foreigners, who are about to attend Lalon Festival in Kushtia, presents the question to the Bangladeshi acquaintance/guide (enacted by AFM Moniruzzaman Shipu).
Done in a docu-fiction style, the film tries to unravel puzzles induced by Lalon’s doctrine.
As the group reaches the akhra (Lalon’s den in Chheuria), a narrator goes over Lalon’s story. The tourists come across Bauls as well as urban singers.
According to the narrator, Lalon was raised by his mentor Siraj Shai. Siraj Shai apparently found a seven-month-old Lalon by the river, though the last recent film on the mystic bard tries to establish that Lalon was found as an adult by Malam Karikar and raised as a son.
As the foreigners — escorted by their Bangladeshi friend and Baul Shafi Mandal — go out for sightseeing, they come across a boy named Munna. His singing ability mesmerises them. They want to know about him. And from this moment on the main plot of “Andho Nirangom” develops. Going beyond Munna’s story, it is a tale of two Bauls — Mataji (Rokeya Prachy) and her devotional partner Shamsher Shai (Jayanta Chattopadhyay).
The title of the film is borrowed from one of Lalon’s songs: “Chitto Mandotomo Andho Nirangom”. The film, in its on way of course, tries to shed light on Lalon’s deliberate will to remain childless. It is known that Lalon had no child and perhaps, he wanted his disciples to follow his examples. Mataji faces a dilemma when she finds out that two of her disciples have broken the rule. They ask Mataji, “If a child is not born, who would carry on the legacy?”
Apart from direction, Kallol also wrote the story and screenplay. Research for the film, however, seemed inadequate. “Andho Nirangom” is the first feature film produced by Ekushey Television. The main reason the film should be lauded is that it highlights Lalon’s philosophy and the Baul way of life. More educated views and observations on Lalon and Bauls, in the form of films and TV plays, are necessary.
Sanjeeb Ahmed and Reetu A. Sattar, along with Bauls and a group of foreigners have donned other important roles. As the film is on Lalon, music is an important part of it. Popular songs by Shafi Mandal, Anusheh Anadil, Bimol Das, Munna and Mamo will certainly appease the audience.
“Andho Nirangom” premiered on December 20 at Star Cineplex, Bashundhara Mall, Dhaka. The film will be released today (December 23).

In conversation with Moushumi
Actress Moushumi won many hearts for her role in the film “Keyamat Theke Keyamat” in 1991. In her 20- year career, she has starred in many more films and tried her hand at direction too. Of late, she has acted in a film titled “Projapoti” Mosumi took some time off from her busy schedule to talk to The Daily Star (TDS) about myriad subjects.
Many actors who embarked on a career in films much later than you have gone into oblivion. But you are on the go. What explains your success story?
Moushumi: Possibly my effort, dedication and hard work have helped me hold my own in the film industry. I was true to my profession and have a great penchant for films. No one can succeed in any profession without true love for it. I had the opportunity to act in several good films including “Meghla Akash”, “Golapi Ekhon Biletey”, “Keyamat Theke Keyamat”, “Khairun Sundari” and “Denmohor”. I received a national award for my role in the film “Meghla Akash”.
What propels you towards social work?
Moushumi: I feel an urge from within to do something for the underprivileged. I have established a school for almost 200 children. Now I have a plan to set up a hospital for the differently abled.
Alongside you have major responsibilities in the UN. What are they?
Moushumi: Yes. You are right. I was made special ambassador to the UN. I have also worked for children as a representative of UNESCO.
Tell us about your role in the film “Projapoti” which was released last week.
Moushumi: I was very optimistic about the success of the film and my hunch turned out to be correct. I watched the film at a cinema hall along with all my family members. In a word, I enjoyed the film. The spectators also watched the film with great fervour. The film has been a total sell out and advance tickets for a week have been sold. I appreciate the enthusiasm of this generation of film viewers. All those in the hall lauded my acting along with that of Zahid Hasan and Mosharraf Karim. Special thanks to Raj, the director of the film, who pulled out all the stops in making the film.
What are your upcoming films?
Moushumi: On the invitation from expatriate Bangladeshis, I went to Qatar to participate in a cultural programme last Eid-ul-Azha. That’s why I was out of the scene for a while. Now I am working in several films including “Soubhagyo”, directed by F I Manik and “Ek Cup Cha”, produced by actor Ferdous. Recently, I have finished shooting for the film “Devdas”. Several films are in the pipeline. I also acted in two TV plays last Eid and plan to act in several more TV plays.
You have recently been elected as a vice president of Bangladesh Chalachchitra Shilpi Samity. What initiatives would you like to take in future?
Moushumi: We have many plans up our sleeves. First of all to raise funds, we would like to organise a cultural event with Dhallywood and Tollywood artistes. We don’t want to see the label “Destitute Artiste”. You will get to know about other initiatives in course of time.
Many young directors have sought to get a foothold in the film industry. What is your take on this trend?
Moushumi: Of course young directors must come forward. I believe if they seriously engage themselves, the overall scenario of our film industry will change for the better. A good number of young directors are now active in our industry. I hope they do better. The director of “Projapoti” is young too. Nayeem Imtiaz Neyamul, the director of “Ek Cup Cha”, is very young. The young can win against all the odds.
Are you optimistic about the future of Bangladeshi cinema?
Moushumi: Our film industry suffered much in the recent past. Now it is turning in the right direction. If we fail, it will be hard for us to drag ourselves out of the morass.
