Chandika Hathurusighe has been appointed Bangladesh National Team Head Coach, confirmed Bangladesh Cricket Board through a press release on Tuesday.

This will be the former Sri Lanka batsman’s second spell with the Bangladesh team which he had previously coached from 2014 to 2017.

The 54-year old Hathurusighe has reached a two-year term with the BCB which starts from February 2023.

Hathurusighe said he was excited at the prospect of returning to Bangladesh cricket: ‘It’s an honour to have been given this opportunity to coach the Bangladesh national team once again.

‘I really loved the warmth of the people and the culture of Bangladesh whenever I have been there. I’m looking forward to working with the players once again and enjoy their successes.’

BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury has welcomed the new head coach who replaces South African Russell Domingo: ‘Chandika’s experience and knowledge of Bangladesh cricket will be an advantage for him and will benefit the players. He is a proven tactician and we have seen his impact on the national team during his first assignment.’

Some of the highlights of Hathurusighe’s previous tenure include first ODI series victories over Pakistan, India and South Africa, a maiden quarterfinal appearance in a World Cup (2015) and first Test wins against England, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe on Monday shrugged off media speculations regarding his taking over the charge of Sri Lanka national cricket team.
Hathurusinghe joined the preparation camp of the 27-member elite squad ahead of the home series against Australia featuring two Tests. Quoting other reports, Press Trust of India on September 4 said that Sri Lanka Cricket is likely to approach Hathurusinghe for the post of chief coach as he has done remarkably well with the Bangladesh national side.
The post of Sri Lanka’s head coach fell vacant after Marvan Atapattu resigned earlier in the wake of their 2-1 Test series defeat to India.
‘I am just learning about the speculation through Facebook,’ Hathurusinghe told New Age regarding the latest development.
Hathurusinghe arrived in Dhaka on Sunday after completing his vacation and looked to be in no mood to switch his focus from his job at hand as he spent a busy day at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Hathurusinghe held several meetings with members of the selection panel and BCB’s grounds committee chairman to discuss his future plan of action about the forthcoming Australia series.
BCB officials said Hathurusinghe gave his consent about sending a strong Bangladesh A-team in India where at least 10 Test cricketers could be included.
Hathurusinghe also asked the grounds committee to prepare a sporting wicket for the Australia series.
Tigers start their full-fledged skill camp on Monday after a three-week long strength and conditioning camp under the guidance of trainer Mario Villarayan that ended on Monday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said there is no chance of their coach leaving his job now.
‘There is no chance of him quitting immediately,’ said Nizamuddin, referring to Hathurusinghe, who is under contract with the BCB till June 2016.
‘As far as I know he was not evn approached by SLC,’ he added.

Hathurusinghe guided Bangladesh to the quarter-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup and three successive ODI series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa in 2015.
Hathurusinghe, who is currently on leave, is expected to join the Tigers on September 6 as they prepare for the home series against world champions Australia.
He is under contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board upto June 2016.
When contacted, BCB’s cricket operation’s chief Naimur Rahman said he is unaware of any such development.
‘We have a contract with him and we hope he will honour it,’ said Naimur.
Hathurusinghe earlier worked as the assistant coach of Sri Lanka national team under Trevor Trevor Bayliss before he was unceremoniously dismissed in 2010.

Bangladesh have kept their feet firmly on the ground despite their recent success and are ready to face South Africa, coach Chandika Hathurusinghe said on Friday, ahead of the home series against the Proteas. The Proteas are relatively unknown opponent for Bangladesh, having never played the Tigers in any formats since 2011, which make the series against them more challenging for the home side.
Their barrage of quick bowlers, who can make the ball talking even on a dead pitch, made them fearsome for any opposition and Bangladesh should not be any expectations.
To add with their pace bowlers, no matter how raw they are, the Proteas have some of the most destructive batsmen like AB de Villiers, David Miller at their disposal.
Keeping that in mind Hathurusinghe refused to brand Bangladesh as favourites and handed the honour to the Proteas despite recent wins against similarly difficult oppositions like Pakistan and India.
‘South Africa are a really, really good side for a long period of time in all format of cricket,’ said the Sri Lankan coach in Mirpur on Friday. ‘They have been a consistent side for several years. I think they are favorites…they are a very strong team.’
Bangladesh’s biggest hope is their confidence which started to reach higher since the World Cup when they reached the quarter-finals defying all odds.
Hathurusinghe said they are preparing for the South African quick bowlers the way they did it in the World Cup and so far the formula has worked.
‘We can’t control how quick they are going to bowl, isn’t it?,’ he said. ‘We are preparing like we prepared for the other series. It was our challenge to get used to the conditions in the World Cup where there were quick pitches.
‘Training hasn’t changed much, as it is working for us,’
The Sri Lankan coach indicated that they are not planning anything extraordinary for the side, who he said are ‘very competent side.’
‘Lately we have been balanced in spin and pace,’ he said.
‘Traditionally Bangladesh is known to have a lot of good spinners. It is not different now.
‘We don’t have a lot of fast bowlers but they bring different quality to the team. Some are tall, some have variation, and some can swing the ball. This is our advantage: we can go either way.
‘South Africa have good quick bowlers, a good batting side and lately they play spin well too. They are a very competent side.
‘We can’t find any major weakness in our armory so we have to play consistent cricket and make good decisions in the middle,’ he said, adding if Bangladesh can maintain the similar consistency they can rewrite history in this series too.
Bangladesh defeated Pakistan for the first time in 16 years before going to win the ODI series 3-0 and eke out their first draw in Tests against the side. Two months later, the Tigers recorded their first ODI series win over India to climb to seventh place in the ICC rankings for the first time.
Against South Africa they have just one win in all formats in 24 meetings which came in World Cup 2007. Hathurusinghe hoped it’s high time for Tigers to improve their record.
‘If I believe in history, I won’t be here today. I don’t believe in history. It is there to change,’ he said.
‘It is how we go about doing it, is key. We are not part of history. We are part of present and what we do now.
‘I can’t do much about what players read or write. I can only tell about it to players is what we can do now and what our strength is.
‘I constantly tell them how good they are and what they can do,’ he said.

Bangladesh’s Australian head coach Shane Jurgensen termed the rivalry between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh similar to the Ashes but asked his charges not to take any extra pressure on themselves ahead of the upcoming 33-day tour.
‘This is our Ashes,’ Jurgensen told New Age on Tuesday. ‘It’s good to hear people say that to me it but we cannot get complacent neither can we take any extra pressure due to that.’
Jurgensen emphasised on taking forward the positives from the last two Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka rather than trying to focus on the past where Zimbabwe humiliated Bangladesh by 130 runs on their return to Test cricket after six years of exile.
‘From my perspective I am not worried what we had done in 2011 and would like to say we need to focus on the present,’ said Jurgensen.
‘Some of the guys who went there in 2011 might have some sort of revenge or things like that but I would like them to follow the basics rather than emphasising on those things,’ he said.
‘I think we played competitive cricket in the last two series and I am confident that if we can take that forward in the upcoming series, we can carry our game to the next level and the result will take care of itself,’ said Jurgensen.
Jurgensen also requested his pace bowlers to come up trumps in conditions which will be seamer- friendly and he also feels that they can get 20 wickets by properly utilising the wicket  at Harare.
‘We need to take 20 wickets if we want to win the Test matches and the pace bowlers need to improve as the condition would be seamer-friendly,’ said Jurgensen.
‘We would work specifically to help them being aggressive, consistent and know where to bowl,’ said Jurgensen.
‘I think if we can bowl to our potential it is very much possible to get them out twice,’ he added.
He was also delighted with the return of ace all-rounder Sakib al Hasan after his injury lay off that he believes will help the team as he is keen for the mercurial Sakib to contribute to the team’s cause in any way he can.
‘Sakib (al Hasan) is a great player, no doubt about that, and his return will certainly strengthen the team,’ said Jurgensen.
‘I am impressed by his desire to return and contribute because initially after his operation we thought he could be out for the second Test as well,’ added the Australian.

When everybody was celebrating Bangladesh’s first Test draw in Galle, coach Shane Jurgensen could not join the party all the time. He admitted to have been burnt deep inside, despite the draw, as the pace unit that he leads in the team still looked very ordinary.
As the tour progressed it continued to remain so and in some cases it was even embarrassing. The first one-day international in Hambantota did nothing to improve the mood of Jurgensen.
Opening the bowling, Abul Hasan and Rubel Hossain conceded 96 runs together in 10 overs to suggest if this was the worst pace bowling attack a Test-playing country can ever have.
Jurgensen saw some improvement in the rain-ruined second one-day international where Bangladesh still had the opportunity to bowl five overs. They gave away 33 runs but still created some chances which could have easily come their way.
The little improvement gives the coach some hopes that they can still bounce back and make a match-winning contribution in the last and final one-dayer today.
‘I always believe in my bowlers,’ Jurgensen said in the press conference on Wednesday. ‘We certainly did not bowl as well as we can in game one. I saw some improvement, though it was only five overs the other night.
‘And we need to keep improving every game, and we need to execute the plan with the new ball and take early wickets. We haven’t quite done that in the first two games, we are looking to do that tomorrow night.’
One major problem Jurgensen identified in Bangladesh’s pace bowlers is their inability to make the right decision at the right time. As a coach, he said, he can only give them information and they have to use it for their cause.
‘A coach can give as much information as possible about the opposition. Players have got to fulfil the preparation,’ said Jurgensen. ‘If you are a bowler and on top of your mark you feel one second that either the plan one you got is right or two it’s become tough and that’s something we are trying to improve.
‘In terms of what we are trying with bowlers, when you bowl in good pitches, better pitches, your basics need to be really important. We could have been more accurate on this tour to create more pressure [if our basic was right] and that’s something we need to address in future,’ he said.
The coach, however, insisted that in order to be successful they just cannot wait for the one group to shine. Rather they must perform as a unit like they did in the recent home series against the West Indies.
‘Basically, for Bangladesh, we have identified, if we are to be successful we have got to play well in all departments,’ he said.
‘Against West Indies we did that really well, we bowled well, fielded well and batted well. It’s the same thing, we got to play as a team and execute in all departments to give ourselves the best opportunity to win,’ Jurgensen said.
‘And for me, it’s just making sure we play as a team, every decision we take on and off the field it’s team-based. We want to make sure we work harder, train harder. For this it is important to identify what we did when we had success.
‘Being the bowling coach for over a year, I have the opportunity to sit back and analyse I can see that. Basically what I am trying with my support staff and senior players, that we try and execute that in every game,’ he said.

Shane Jurgensen was pleasantly surprised to learn of the BCB’s decision to continue with him as Bangladesh’s head coach but knows he has a challenging assignment ahead.
‘I have a lot of feelings at the moment,’ he told ESPNcricinfo. ‘I am surprised, excited and honoured to be given the responsibility to look after the team. I would like to continue on the recent success against West Indies.’
The chief concern for Jurgensen ahead of the Sri Lanka series next month is the bowling, which will have to bear the brunt of the heat and several vastly experienced batsmen. Also, Sakib al Hasan’s availability is under a cloud due to injury. The batting and fielding will also have to be addressed, and all of this has to be done in less than two weeks after the BPL ends on February 19.
The touring party is likely to be selected by February 15 and the preparatory camp set to start the day after the end of the Twenty20 tournament. The chaotic schedule over the next three weeks could also be complicated by the appointments of various specialist coaches and their adjustment to the country, the players and the team atmosphere. But Jurgensen is only focusing on what he has to put in place.
‘Our main concern is the bowlers who have to move from T20 to Tests,’ Jurgensen said. ‘The plan is to make them bowl the number of overs they would do in a Test match. The batsmen have been doing well in the BPL and that’s a good sign, but Test cricket requires something different.
‘We get together on February 20, but I also know that many of our batsmen will play in the Bangladesh Cricket League final (a first-class tournament) which is a plus for us. I think playing four or five-day cricket before a Test series is always useful.’
He was first appointed in November when the contractual tussle between Richard Pybus and the BCB ended up with Bangladesh without a coach ahead of the West Indies series. Jurgensen took over as interim coach and though it is hard to tell whether he made a major impact, the team felt stable and ended up pushing the visitors all the way. After a close first Test and a poor second one, Bangladesh won the ODI series 3-2, one of the things that went in Jurgensen’s favour when the BCB’s cricket operations committee took the decision.
Having worked in the Bangladesh setup since October 2011, he will also be aware of how fickle the administrators can be. As a result, his immediate goal is to put together a plan that is successful in Sri Lanka, a country where Bangladesh have regularly underperformed. They have never won a Test match in the country, losing all six in three full series since 2002.
‘My immediate goal would be to perform well in Sri Lanka. I would like to go there and look to win. It was a very good series against the West Indies. The players have been doing well in the BPL, so I am confident. We have some precise goals regarding conditions and opposition in the short time we get after BPL.’
By deciding on Jurgensen, a 36-year-old from Queensland with no international playing experience, the BCB has also deviated from their tradition of appointing a major name. Perhaps the poor experience with the previous two coaches, Stuart Law and Richard Pybus, helped to open up the search a bit more.
Law had left last year, less than a year after being appointed while the BCB’s contractual trouble with Pybus ended that relationship in four months. Though Jurgensen will only continue till the end of 2013, it is a role that he relishes and maybe a bit of hunger is what the Bangladesh coaching role deserves.

Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper and New Zealand opener Mark Greatbatch are among the candidates willing take up the job of Bangladesh cricket team’s head coach, officials said on Monday.
The position fell vacant after Englishman Richard Pybus refused to continue because of a contract dispute with the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Bowling coach Shane Jurgensen acted as interim coach during the home series against West Indies, but officials said they are unlikely to stick with him, who primarily is a bowling coach.
The BCB recently floated an advertisement for the post but received a poor response, which prompted the officials to use their personal connection to look for an interested candidate.
Hooper and Greatbatch expressed their interests informally and are currently weighing up their options, said Jalal Yunus, chairman of the BCB media committee.
Yunus added that former Australian fast bowler Craig McDermott also expressed his interest, though the BCB is unlikely to call him for an interview.
‘He [McDermott] is very keen in fact. But since we are looking for a batting specialist as the head coach, I don’t think we would be interested about him,’ said Yunus.
McDermott is currently Ireland’s bowling coach and is understood to be shortlisted as Somerset’s coach. McDermott had also served as Australia’s bowling coach before quitting last May.
Yunus, however, refused to provide any details of their negotiation with Hooper and Greatbatch, two great batsmen of their generation.
‘All I can say is that they are both interested,’ said Yunus, without elaborating.
Hooper, a great fielder and decent all-rounder, who retired from international cricket in 2003. After his retirement, Hooper hasn’t had a major international coaching job. Two years ago, he was the batting coach of the Sagicor High Performance Centre in Barbados.
Greatbatch’s name was also discussed when Jamie Siddons quit as Bangladesh coach in 2011, but the BCB ruled him out as he was the coach of the New Zealand side that lost to Bangladesh 4-0 in the previous year.
The last date for submitting an application to become the head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team is January 25. The BCB, however said they are in no hurry as they have Jurgensen as an alternative for the Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe tour in March-April.

Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus is confident that the national cricket team is shaping up well ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 as the players are more or less settled in the side with several T20 matches under their belt after their tour of Europe.
‘What is important for us is that we have got a core group of people to work with as the side is quite settled now,’ Pybus told reporters after the first practice session of the Tigers on Sunday.
‘I don’t see any major changes in the team when we go forward to Trinidad and the World Cup,’ Pybus.
Pybus was happy with the result in Europe where Bangladesh after thrashing Ireland by 3-0 margin was shocked by Scotland and Holland in two of the last three matches of the tour.
‘I am reasonably satisfied with the progress that we have made. We have won four out of six games that we have played,’ said Pybus.
‘We had a 48 hour turn around and we were to play in a very slow and low wicket in Holland. That was specifically a challenge in itself as international players would not often play in that condition.
‘We didn’t play the way we would have liked, but it was important for us to get that experience and get to the ground after winning the Ireland series and have our focus brought back to the fact that we are still a growing, emerging cricketing nation,’ he said philosophically.
But more than anything else it was the attitude of the players that impressed the South African most as everyone tried to take up the challenge despite facing trying condition.
‘I am very happy with the attitude especially in Ireland where it was not that easy for the touring side as there was rain and the wicket was damp. There were limited tour facilities but the
guys got into it, they did a lot of fielding work and conditioning.
‘From my side I was very happy with that and the guys were supporting each other and were looking for opportunity and that was a really positive mindset because on that you build up a good team,’ he added.
Pybus was also satisfied to see the way former skipper Mashrafee bin Murtaza performed in the tour after getting a slow start.
‘He was a quality cricketer and he was battling a little bit and then he turned around with wonderful performances. He was a little bit slow initially, but eventually got into the rhythm and showed the attitude and mindset that distinguish him as a cricketer in Bangladesh,’ said Pybus.
The coach was also confident that Sakib al Hasan would return to cricket in due time as his injury is not that severe. ‘I chatted with him and he was reasonably happy with the progress he is making.
‘He is rehabbing with the physio and the conditioning coach. We are just going to build him up gradually before bringing him back to play cricket,’ he added.
Rain poured in all morning and the 15 national players, out of the 19-member squad, had to be content at the Mirpur indoor as they completed the first day of their preparation camp.
Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, Nasir Hossain and Tamim Iqbal are playing in the Sri Lankan Premier League while Mohammad Ashraful is fulfilling his County commitments.
