Khulna Tigers head coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon was fined for violating the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Code of Conduct after being caught smoking in the dressing room during his team’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) game against Fortune Barishan on Friday.

“Mahmud was fined 30 percent of his match fees for a Level 1 breach (Article 2.20; Conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game) of the BCB Code of Conduct Players and Player Support Personnel during the Ispahani BPL T20 match against Fortune Barishal at the SBNCS, Mirpur on 10 February,” read a BCB-issed press release on Monday.

Khulna’s game against Barishal on Friday was heading towards a thrilling climax with Khulna needing nine off the final over. Only one run was scored in the first ball before Khulna’s Habibur Rahman Sohan was dropped in the deep in the second delivery, with the ball reaching the boundary for a four. Mahmud was seen smoking in TV footage at that point in the game.

Habibur smashed a six in the next delivery to help Khulna end their dismal BPL campaign with only their third win of this edition.

In addition to the fine, two demerit points were also added to Mahmud’s disciplinary records.

Meanwhile, apart from Mahmud, Rangpur Riders duo Shak Mahedi Hasan and Nicholas Pooran, and Comilla Victorians’ Mosaddek Hossain were also fined for breaching the BCB Code of Conduct on separate offenses.

Mahedi was found in breach (Level 1) of Article 2.2, which refers to abuse of cricket equipment, in the Eliminator on 12 February against Fortune Barishal at the SBNCS and was fined 25 percent of his match fees. One (01) demerit point was also added to his disciplinary record. Pooran meanwhile, breached the BCB’s clothing regulations (Level 1, Article 2.22) in the same match and was handed a 50 percent match fee fine. Two (02) demerit points were added to his record also.

Mosaddek was fined 25 percent of his match fees while, one (01) demerit point was added to his disciplinary record for breaching the logo guideline (Level 1, Article 2.22) in the first Qualifier against Sylhet Strikers at the SBNCS on 12 February.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

All of the aforementioned players and officials admitted to the offenses and hence, there was no need for any official hearing.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was reappointed as the Bangladesh national team Test captain while in-form wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das was made the vice-captain.
The position of Bangladesh Test captain went vacant after Mominul Haque decided to step down from the role on Tuesday with an aim to focus on his batting.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan made the announcement during a press conference following a board meeting on Thursday.
‘Shakib will be our next Test captain while Liton will be our vice. They will be in the post until further decision is made,’ BCB president Nazmul told the reporters.
Since being appointed as the captain in October 2020, Mominul led Bangladesh in 17 Tests and managed to win just three times, losing on twelve occasions and drawing twice.
The 30-year-old was in hot water over his poor run of form recently, scoring 162 runs at an average of 16.20 in six matches.
Shakib first led the Test team in 2009 in West Indies and continued till 2011 before he was stripped of the captaincy following the Zimbabwe tour.
Later he took over the Test captaincy once again in December 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim.
The 34-year-old played the role for around two years before ICC handed him a one-year ban from all cricket in 2019 for failing to report a bookie’s corrupt approaches.

Bangladesh batsman Liton Das attained career-best ratings in Tests after being instrumental with the bat in Bangladesh’s recently-concluded two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
He has risen five spots to claim the 12th position and is now the highest ranked Bangladesh batter in the longest format. Liton’s rating point (724) is the highest by any Bangladesh batsman in the history of Tests.
He made 281 runs in three innings in the recently concluded Test series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at an average of 94. In the second Test in Dhaka, Liton scored a brilliant hundred and stitched a historic partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim. Liton has been the second-highest run-getter in Tests this year, only behind Australia’s Usman Khawaja.
Mushfiqur Rahim (17th) is the only other Bangladesh batsman in the top 20 as he enjoyed a superb run of form in the Sri Lanka series with back-to-back hundreds. Mushfiq has moved up seven spots to claim the 17th position.

Pacer Hasan Mahmud will replace Shohidul Islam in the Bangladesh squad for their forthcoming tour of West Indies after the latter was ruled out due to a side strain, confirmed Bangladesh national team chief selector Minhajul Abedin.
Bangladesh are scheduled to leave for the West Indies in three separate groups from June 3 to 5 to take part in two Tests, three ODIs and similar number of T20Is against the Caribbean’s.
The series starts with the first Test in Antigua on June 16.
‘We are going to name Hasan Mahmud as the replacement of Shohidul shortly,’ Minhajul told New Age on Tuesday.
Right-arm pacer Shohidul, who played his only T20I against Pakistan last year, was included in the Test and T20I squads for the West Indies tour but had been ruled out of the series after he suffered a side strain during training in Mirpur on Monday.
Bangladesh Cricket Board physician Manzur Hosaain Chowdhury told reporters on Tuesday that Mahmud would take four to six weeks to recover fully.
‘Shohidul suffered a side strain during training. It will take him around four to six weeks’ time to recover completely.’

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque has decided to step down from his role as captain after relentless criticism from the cricket fraternity due the team’s poor performance under his leadership and his off-form with the bat.
Under his captaincy the hosts suffered a crashing 10-wicket defeat against the touring Sri Lanka in the recently concluded second and final Test that led the visitors to a 1-0 series win.
Mominul, who was called up by the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan at his residence on Tuesday, told the reporters that he felt it was better for him to relinquish captaincy so that he could concentrate on his batting.
The left-handed batsman’s form has come under scrutiny following a string of low scores. The southpaw has aggregated only 176 runs at an average of 12.57 in his last 15 innings, with just a fifty (88) against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in January to his name.
Mominul has failed to reach double-digits in his last seven innings, having made only 24 runs starting from the tour of South Africa in April. As a Test captain, Mominul has compiled 912 runs in 17 games at a modest average of just over 31. Bangladesh have won three Tests and drawn two while losing the remaining 12 under his leadership.
‘I was unable to contribute as a captain in the last few series and I think that I wasn’t able to motivate my team. I think it’s better to give the responsibility to someone new,’ said Mominul after the meeting with the BCB boss.  ‘I have said what I want, the rest will depend on the board’s decision. At the moment it would be better for me to take a break and focus on my batting.’
When asked whether he was under any pressure to step down from the role of captaincy, Mominul said he was not under any pressure from any quarters.
‘When you play well and even if the team does not get the result you can still motivate the team. The thing is I am not being able to perform well and the team is also not doing well and in such a situation it’s difficult to do the captaincy,’ he said.
‘If I honestly feel I think it’s better not to continue the captaincy. Not only me even the best captain in the world would be under pressure if the team does not do well and it’s normal.’
Mominul also said that the decision was now in the hands of the board in relation to appointing a new Test captain. The next board meeting is on June 2.
‘He (Nazmul) did not say anything at all. I said that I want a break [from captaincy], as I want to concentrate on my batting as I feel it will be good for me. There is a board meeting in the coming days and they will decide there what they want to do,’ he said.
Mominul was entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the side after Shakib Al Hasan was banned by the ICC for failing to report a corrupt approach in 2019.

Bangladesh pace bowling coach Allan Donald lauded Ebadot Hossain due to his brilliant bowling effort on the rain-hit third day of their second Test against Sri Lanka in Dhaka on Wednesday.
With 39 overs having been lost to rain, Sri Lanka ended the day on 282-5, only 83 runs behind Bangladesh’s first innings total of 365.
Ebadot’s figure of 2-78 might seem ordinary but with the delivery that he bowled night-watchman Kasun Rajitha for a duck in the second ball of the morning, was a treat to watch.
The right-arm pacer angled his wicket ball into Rajitha, then got it to seam away to beat the outside edge and hit off stump – a delivery that might have had a far more competent batter in trouble.
Ebadot bowled 26 overs with a low-priced economy of 3.00 and the former South African fast bowling legend felt that the Bangladesh pacer could have clinched four or five wickets if luck was on his side.
The pacer could have the prized wicket of Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne for 37 on the second day if the hosts didn’t held back from reviewing an lbw appeal.
Ebadot soon got his reward for good bowling as he dismissed Oshada Fernando, who gave a catch to Najmul Hossain at slip for 57.
Later Karunaratne went on make 80, still the top score of the Sri Lankan innings.
‘Ebadot was outstanding today [Wednesday]. You know when you see someone in the warm-up, and you know something about him will click today. Scoreboard doesn’t reflect the way he bowled today. He could have walked away with four or five
wickets,’ said Donald following the end of third day’s play.
Donald also backed the other pacer Khaled Ahmed, who remained wicketless so far, to use the wicket intelligently in the fourth morning.
‘That’s what the spell was worth. Khaled hasn’t really got it quite right, but tomorrow is a massive day. We need some early poles in the morning. The pitch too gives us a bit to work with every morning.’
The Protea great believes that that the missing of pacer duo Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam in the series is also a great opportunity of learning for Ebadot and Khaled.
‘Shoriful unfortunately fractured his finger. Taskin is a great miss. But sometimes someone missing a game is another one’s opportunity,’ he said.
‘Ebadot and Khaled have another opportunity to learn, and I want people to be vigilant and patient with their process. Khaled is learning all the time.’
Donald was also full of praise of Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who finished the day with 3-59 wickets.
‘I have been a great admirer of Shakib. When AB says it is tough to get down to Shakib, then it must be tough. He is a smart operator. He changes his pace really subtly,’ Donald added.
‘He showed again, chipped away. Hopefully he walks away with a five wicket haul tomorrow. It is awesome to have him in the team. His experience and leadership is priceless.’

BCB has granted leave to Bangladesh veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim for upcoming West Indies tour, so that he can perform hajj in July.
“Mushfiqur wrote an application for a leave to attend this year’s Hajj a month ago ahead of the Sri Lanka series but nothing was official. However, the process has been finalised and he received a government quota. He will miss the entire West Indies Series,” Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Yunus said.
The Tigers will travel to West Indies in June to play two Test matches, three ODIs and three T20Is. The first Test will set the stage at Antigua on June 16 followed by the second Test at Saint Lucia on June 24. Bangladesh are set to depart for West Indies on June 6.
Afterward, the T20I series will start on July 2 in Dominica and the ODI series will start on July 16.
Pacers Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam have already been ruled out of the West Indies Test series due to injuries and the absence of ‘Mr. Dependable’ will be one more issue the BCB will address in the coming days.
Rahim is currently playing for Bangladesh in the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home.
In the first Test in Chattogram, Rahim became the first Bangladesh player to score 5000 Test runs. He scored 105, with the help of just four boundaries, as Bangladesh took a lead of 68 in the first innings.
The match ended in a draw affair after Sri Lanka posted 260/6 on the final day. Senior player Angelo Mathews was named player of the match for sparkling 199.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has urged pacer Mustafizur Rahman to participate in all three formats of the West Indies Tour in June.
“We have been thinking about it and we want Mustafizur to take part in all three formats from the West Indies series,” BCB sources said.
Fizz, who is currently playing for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is yet to respond to the board’s proposition.
The left-arm paceman has featured in just 14 out of the 39 Tests that Bangladesh played in since his debut back in 2015. He had recently said that he wanted to manage his workload by picking and choosing formats. Following injuries to pacers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam, who are both unlikely to make it back in time for the West Indies Tests, Fizz’s name once again came back into focus before a red-ball assignment.
The Tigers will travel to West Indies in June to play two Test matches, three ODIs and three T20Is. The first Test is set to be played at Antigua on June 16 followed by the second Test at Saint Lucia on June 24. Bangladesh are set to depart for West Indies on June 6.
