A parliamentary body on Sunday (May 22, 2022), expressed deep concern over the increasing number of divorces in the country.
The parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has recommended taking necessary steps to reduce the number of divorces in the country.
After coming out from the meeting, the Workers Party MP Lutfun Nesa said that the divorce rate in Bangladesh has taken a terrible shape. There are many reasons for this. She listed drugs and extramarital affairs as some of the main culprits.
The parliamentary watchdog at its previous meeting had discussed the issue.
Speaking on the issue of training of newly married couples, reserved seat MP Lutfun Nesa Khan raised the issue of increasing number of divorces.
She claimed many families are getting divorced due to drug abuse.
She said that the newlyweds can be brought into a programme so that they can play a role in inculcating religious education and moral values ??in their children from the childhood.
Lawmaker Shabnam Jahan said that divorce has become a very common issue in today’s society, which is very worrying.
She said that social media like Facebook, TikTok has created extreme instability in the society.
“Extramarital affairs have increased in the recent times and Facebook and TikTok are big reasons behind this. People are busy with these social media for hours. Husband becomes obsessed with other women while wife becomes obsessed with other men. In this way people get involved with extramarital affairs. At one stage their family breaks up.”
She suggested shutting down TikTok and bringing control on Facebook as measures. “Abusing drugs also need to be controlled. It cannot be stopped completely.”
She also suggested the appointment of an area-based counsellor (psychologist) to curb the unrest, including reducing the number of divorces.
Committee members Fazilatun Nesa Indira, Shabnam Jahan, Lutfun Nesa Khan, Sahadara Mannan, and Kaniz Fatema Ahmed participated in the meeting chaired by the committee chief Meher Afroz.
