The Socceroos’ World Cup qualifier in Bangladesh next month was thrown into doubt on Thursday when Football Federation Australia officially notified FIFA of their security fears, reports AFP.
With Cricket Australia called off their two-Test tour of Bangladesh on Thursday citing security concerns after official warnings that militants may attack Western interests, Australia’s football chiefs announced their own concerns about playing in the South Asian nation.
The group-topping Socceroos are due to take on Bangladesh in Dhaka on November 17.
The death of an Italian aid worker in Dhaka’s diplomatic quarter — shot three times on Monday night in a murder claimed by Islamic State group — escalated safety fears.
‘FFA is concerned about the security situation in Bangladesh and will continue ongoing discussions with DFAT, relevant government agencies and security experts,’ the body said.
‘FFA has formally raised the matter with FIFA and AFC (Asian Football Confederation).’
The Socceroos faced heightened security issues around their September World Cup qualifier in Dushanbe, capital of troubled central Asian nation Tajikistan.
The Bangladesh Football Federation, however, remained unperturbed as world football’s governing body FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation did not inform them anything about the issue.
‘We are not concerned about the media report,’ BFF’s general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag told reporters on Thursday.
‘Neither FIFA, nor the Asian Football Confederation have informed us anything about the matter. So, at the moment we will not make any comments about it.
‘We can only say that we are working on to host the match on the scheduled date of November 17.
‘We will take all the necessary steps to give the Socceroos our best hospitality including top class security, what we usually provide to all the visiting teams.
‘We have already hosted three World Cup and Asian Cup joint qualifying matches successfully at home and also going to host the AFC under-19 Championship Qualifiers starting from tomorrow [Friday].’

The militants threat that prompted Cricket Australia to put its national cricket team’s planned Bangladesh visit on hold could have a greater ramification as Football Federation Australia also started thinking in the same line ahead of a World Cup qualifier. Bangladesh are scheduled to host Australia for a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Dhaka on November 17, but the militant threat, followed by the killing of an Italian aid worker has put the match in doubt.
Australian media reported that their football federation is closely monitoring the situation and is likely to follow the Cricket Australia, who is on the verge of cancelling the cricket team’s voyage.
A spokesperson of Football Federation Australia told Fox Sports that the situation is being monitored but he did not make a comment about moving such a high profile match from Bangladesh to a neutral venue.
‘FFA has been closely monitoring the current security situation in Bangladesh ahead of the planned World Cup Qualifier in November,’ said the FFA spokesman in quotes carried by Fox Sports on Tuesday.
‘FFA has been in discussions with DFAT and
other related Federal Government agencies, security experts and the AFC to ensure we have a clear picture of the situation in Bangladesh.’
Bangladesh Football Federation, however, brushed aside the media reports as ‘rumour’, saying that they have not received any message from FIFA, AFC or the Australian authority.
‘The rumour regarding Australia football team’s visit in Bangladesh is totally baseless,’ said BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag. ‘Neither the Football Federation Australia nor the FIFA or AFC made any inquiry about this so far.’
The BFF official argued that Bangladesh hosted many high-profile football matches in the past including the FIFA friendly
match between Argentina and Nigeria, so providing security to Australia football team should not be a problem.
Shohag added that BFF also assured its overseas coaching staff, including national team’s Italian
head coach Fabio Lopez and his two assistants, who have seen a fellow countryman killed in the capital’s high-security diplomatic zone.
German goalkeeping coach Christian Schweichler was also given the same assurance about his security.
‘The Italian embassy in Dhaka didn’t contact with us so far. We talked to the head coach [Fabio Lopez] and his two assistants already about the security,’ said Shohag.
‘We requested them to inform us about their movements. We have also requested the BKSP authorities to ensure the security of them and other members of the national team.’
’Schweichler, who is now working with the Under-19 team in Dhaka, was also given the same assurance,’ he said.

Bangladesh’s ultra-defensive football bore little fruit as reigning Asian champions Australia romp to 5-0 win over the visitors in the World Cup qualifying match in Perth on Thursday.
The home side left Bangladesh in awe to take 4-0 lead inside the half-an-hour mark, and despite controlling the possession throughout the game, showed little urgency to increase the margin.
As a result Bangladesh could escape with just one more goal in the remaining 60 minutes, a result that will satisfy them considering the fact that it could easily have been worse.
Though Bangladesh took two strikers in their line-up, they deployed all 11 players in their own half without showing an iota of courage to go for a counter-attack, leaving it agonisingly one-sided contest.
Australia’s dominance was evident not just in the score-sheet, but also in match statistics, which suggested that the Soccaroos had over 80 per cent possession and played more than 800 passes throughout the game.
Bangladesh could barely hold the fort for five minutes before Mathew Leckie opened the floodgate with a neat finishing from the six-yard box following a cut back of Massimo Luongo from right.
Tom Rogic doubled the lead two minutes later with a left footed attempt from the edge of the box.
Rogic left Bangladesh shivering once again in the 20th minute when his shot from a Davidson cut back took a deflection off Tapu Barman before finding the back of the net.
The goal was recorded as Tapu’s own goal, leaving the Celtic forward content with just one goal from the match.
Australia left their talismanic striker and captain Tim Cahill out of the starting lineup with Mark Milligan leading the side from midfield. But that made little difference as the hosts went 4-0 ahead before the 30-minute mark.
Leckie forced a fine diving save from Bangladesh goalkeeper Shahidul Alam Sohel, but the ball drops at the feet of Nathan Burns, who smacked it home.
Sohel was under the spotlight throughout but he could do little from stopping the Australians posting a big win.
The shot-stopper did a commendable job as Australia had 22 shots in goal with only five successes.
Bangladesh, who could not take a single shot in Australian post, also suffered from injury problems.
Assistant coach Saiful Bari Titu, who guided the team in the absence of suspended head coach Lodewijk de Kruif, was forced to make two early changes as he sent midfielder Monayem Khan Raju for unfit Hemanta Vincent and right back Yamin Munna for Nasirul Islam.
Winger Abdul Baten Komol was Titu’s final substitution in the later half but none of his changes could affect the game.
In the second half Bangladesh tried hard to restrict the Australians and were lucky for not to concede more than one goal.
Aaton Mooy unleashed a curling shot outside the box in the 61st minute that went into the back of the net.
Substitute Arvine’s header in the 84th minute beat Sohel but hit the far post.
Sohel rescued his side in the injury time to deny substitute forward Ikonomidis who unleashed a powerful right-footer from just outside the box but Sohel was there to punch away for corner.
Bangladesh will play their fourth match against Jordan on September 8 at home.
RESULT
Australia 5 (Leckie 6, Rogic 8, 20 OG, Burns 29, Mooy 61)
v Bangladesh 0

Bangladesh coach and players took little offence in their 5-0 mauling to Australia in the World Cup qualifying match in Perth on Thursday as it could have been worse easily.
Bangladesh’s worst defeats in international matches are identical 9-0 losses to South Korea and Iran, respectively in 1979 and 1982, and the team believe they did a commendable job in preventing a similar result.
Captain Mamunul Islam said they were a bit disappointed after the match but took some comfort after coach Lodewijk de Kruif praised them for not conceding more than five goals against the reigning Asian champions.
‘We were a bit disappointed after the match but coach said he was happy with our performance,’ Mamunul told New Age over phone after the match.
‘Coach told us it was a good result for us because Australia are far ahead of us in every aspect.’
‘He [Kruif] was also happy to see we didn’t give up the game before the final whistle and we tried our best to defend against the mighty opponents with our limited strength,’ said the captain.
Mamunul claimed they were bit shaky in the first half-an-hour which resulted in four early goals for Australia.
‘Australia put immense pressure from the first minute of the match and before us coping up with the unusual situation they took a clear 4-0 lead,’ he said.
‘But if we didn’t concede early four goals the result could have looked decent, if not different.’
Mamunul did little to hide his excitement about playing on such a world-class surface of the Nib Perth Stadium against a quality opposition.
‘We hardly get a chance to play in such high-quality grounds,’ he said.
‘The whole condition was against us but I think we did our best to overcome the odds.’
The midfielder hoped the experience that they gained from Thursday’s match will help them to play better football against Jordan four days later at home.
Bangladesh’s assistant coach Saiful Bari Titu, who guided the team in the absence of suspended Kruif, however, claimed his charges were bit scared in the early part of the match that cost them.
‘We didn’t have enough experience of playing in such a fast ground, naturally it took the players some time to adapt to the condition’, said Titu.
‘No one is satisfied with a loss but this match will definitely help us to fight hard against Jordan at home.
‘Jordan are also a strong team but they are not like Australia,’ so we are confident of playing better against them.’
Bangladesh will play against Jordan at home on September 8.

Bangladesh’s in-form goalkeeper Shahidul Alam Sohel is keen to continue his superb form under the bar when they take on reigning Asian Cup champions Australia in their third World Cup qualifying match in Perth on Thursday. The Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club keeper missed his country’s first two World Cup qualifying games against Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan due to meniscus injury on his left foot.
But after returning from injury, Sohel performed brilliantly for his club in their two AFC Cup play-off qualifying matches against Kyrgyzstan giants FC Alga and Macau champions Casa Benfica on August 13 and 15 respectively.
In both the matches, the tall keeper made some fine saves to propel Jamal into the AFC Cup play-offs round.
Sohel, then continued his fine form to hold hosts Malaysia with a goalless draw in their FIFA international friendly match in Malaysia on Tuesday.
‘We played really well against Malaysia,’ the shot-stopper told New Age over phone from Perth on Tuesday.
‘I believe that will boost our confidence ahead of the game against Australia.’
‘Everybody admired my performance and I want to continue that form against Australia as well.’
Sohel, however, admitted that Australia will be a much tougher opponent than Malaysia.
‘Australian attacking line-up is much stronger than Malaysia,’ said the keeper.
‘So, not only the keeper but also the whole team including the defenders will have to perform to their optimum to overcome this hurdle.’
Sohel also said the Dutch coach Lodewijk de Kruif is giving importance to their defence. Also they are working on how to utilise the chances that they will obtain from counter-attack.
‘Besides defending well the coach is also planning to attack the Socceroos from counter-attack’, said Sohel.

Australian midfielder Matt McKay has warned fans not to expect a cricket score when Australia meet Bangladesh at Perth on Thursday, reports Fox sports.
Australia plays its first World Cup qualifier on home soil, after opening their roads to Russia 2018 with an arduous 2-1 win away to Kyrgyzstan last June. The Bangladesh clash at Perth Glory’s home venue nib Stadium is the Socceroos’ first visit to Perth since 2005, before Postecoglou’s side plays Tajikistan away on Tuesday week.
Despite Bangladesh being ranked 170 and better known for their cricketing exploits, McKay said the Socceroos must set the tone for their whole campaign and said there would be no return to some of the massive scorelines from the Oceania days.
‘It’s not always like that, we saw that with Kyrgyzstan game, where we thought — (they’re ranked) 100-and-something in the world — international football is never easy and we won’t be taking Bangladesh lightly,’ McKay said.
‘Then it’s a tough game away to Tajikistan.
‘We’re on our game, we’re ready, this qualification phase will be testing and these two games will go a long way to making sure we’re focused for the rest of the campaign.
‘I don’t know too much (about Bangladesh) yet, we’ve got a bit of footage. We had staff that have gone and watched their previous game and I’m sure they’ve done their homework.’
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Australia’s first choice goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will miss the match against Bangladesh and subsequent qualifiers against Tajikistan after suffering a knee injury while playing for Spanish club Valencia.
‘It’s a blow for Mat to miss these games but he picked up a knock in Spain overnight and with the travel distance and the lateness of his club game we have decided to bring in Eugene Galekovic,’ Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said on Monday.
‘Eugene is more than capable replacement and he will join us in Perth and we will move ahead without Mat.’
Adelaide United stopper Galekovic, 34, has won eight caps for his country but none since 2013.
Bangladesh national football team underwent a two-hour long intense training session at the Perth Soccer Club, Dorrein on Monday having reached the country a day before.
According to a press release from Bangladesh Football Federation, all the players were in good shape.
Bangladesh assistant coach Saiful Bari Titu also joined with the team in Perth on Monday after he guided the Under-19 team to the semi-finals of the just-concluded SAFF Under-19 Championship in Nepal.
The national team will also have their training session today at the same ground while the Australia national team had a one hour long training session at NIB Stadium Ground, Pier Street in Perth on Monday.

Australia take series 3-0
Though there was some sting from the 3-0 series loss and Australia’s gargantuan score yesterday, it hardly dampened the mood of Imrul Kayes, Shahriar Nafees and Mahmudullah as the trio decided to give coach Jamie Siddons an enjoyable farewell.
To make it a somewhat memorable last game in charge for Siddons, one of his protégé, Kayes, struck a remarkable 93 while Riyad, someone he has always backed, struck a classy unbeaten 68 batting at four for the first time in his career (and hopefully not his last).
The Tigers ended at 295-6 in 50 overs after Australia threatened to make a mockery of Bangladesh by making 361-5, losing the game by 66 runs. It was the third score of over 350 in less than a year (and sixth overall) against the Tigers as Michael Hussey struck a century true to his character in a continued display of batting belligerence.
Then it was the turn of Tigers opener Imrul who tore into the Australian attack getting a cue from his partner Tamim Iqbal, who made a 17-ball 32. After his brief flurry was ended by a Mitchell Johnson yorker, Imrul and Shahriar Nafees kept up the run-rate with some fine shots, particularly Imrul’s fifth and sixth boundaries that came off consecutive Watson deliveries.
First Imrul unfurled a straight drive and followed it up with a punch through the covers. After batting woefully for a 41-ball 5 in the last game he showed a violent streak with a slogged six over mid-wicket. But his flashed drive at a wide James Pattinson ended his innings for 93, Imrul missing his second ODI hundred.
It also gave the young paceman his first international wicket and ended a 136-run second wicket stand, Bangladesh’s highest ever against Australia. Nafees struck his second successive half-century but skied one to Watson off Johnson for an 86-ball 60 that had four boundaries.
Alok Kapali’s return to the batting crease for the Tigers since September 2008 was completely overshadowed by Riyad’s 61-ball knock (five fours and two sixes) that showed his growing temperament as he helped Bangladesh make their highest ODI score against Australia.
Earlier it was Hussey’s third one-day hundred as he hammered a typically breezy 91-ball 108. The nine boundaries and two sixes came while he rebuild and also lead the charge in the last ten overs; Hussey, Mitchell Johnson and John Hastings hammered 94 runs.
Hussey also survived a dropped catch when he was on 94, the ball bursting through Shakib’s hands in the 48th over.
The last ten almost mirrored Australia’s start after they decided to bat first. Shane Watson began where he left off in the second ODI as he smashed 72 off only 40 balls with eleven boundaries and three sixes.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza bore the brunt of the onslaught, giving away 43 runs off his four overs as Shakib surprisingly decided to let the two paceman face the music and not introduce spinners early. But Mashrafe recovered somewhat, picking up three wickets later on (including his 150th, that of Callum Ferguson) while Abdur Razzak also took three.

Siddons bids emotional goodbye
The final match in a long and winding season for Bangladesh cricket could describe coach Jamie Siddons’s tenure in a microcosm.
In certain parts of the game, Bangladesh were brilliant; Imrul Kayes’s belligerent 93, almost as good an innings as played by Michael Hussey on the day. At certain other moments though, they were abysmal too, a fact best highlighted by a bowling performance that was taken to the cleaners by Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting and later Michael Hussey.
In the end, it was an apt metaphor for an inconsistent three-and-a-half years spent under the Australian, the zenith of which was the series whitewash over New Zealand last year, and the nadir of which was the two shocking collapses against West Indies and South Africa in the World Cup, less than a month ago.
Unpredictability and a constant struggle to meet the demands of an expectant public had marked the tenure of the shaven-headed Siddons, and in his final press conference the Australian left behind a simple message: “Be patient with your players.
“These are all young guys, 22-23 years old at best and the best thing we can do is support them during their down times,” said Siddons.
He drew references to the dark days of March when two consecutive batting collapses on the biggest stage of them all had left the public and the press distraught, and perversely perhaps, led to his own demise as a coach.
“These players need the support of their fans and their press to get ahead. During those two games, all you did was criticise, while it was left only to me to pick up the players.
“So be supportive,” he insisted.
Siddons held his own quite well at the press conference and insisted that the team had achieved much of what he had thought they could in his three-and-a-half-year tenure. He was also quick to mention the three high points that marked the legacy of his tenure.
“We have the best all-rounder in the world in Shakib Al Hasan, and he has been at that stage for two years now. We have Tamim Iqbal in the team and we have Abdur Razzak, who is also one of the top ten bowlers in the world,” he said.
Despite admitting that he had not always had it his own way with team selections, Siddons insisted that these were the best 15 players in the country.
“My advice to whoever comes in next will be to stick to this group of players. I feel that if we can stick to this group for the next four years then it will be something very nice for Bangladesh cricket,” said Siddons.
But he did point a finger to an apparent lack of infrastructure.
“What needs to be ensured now is that the next batch of Tamims and Shakibs come into the team and perhaps the question needs to be asked whether we have the right kind of infrastructure for that to happen,” he said.
The Australian freely admitted that he would have liked to stay on as coach, and it was a view backed by Shakib.
In the end, the wider public will probably remember Siddons’s tenure bitterly for 58 and 78, but that would be quite unfair on a man who has done almost as much for Bangladesh cricket as his predecessor Dav Whatmore.
It was certainly no Indian Summer, but as Siddons himself said in the final reckoning, it was a good thing, and “all good things must come to an end.”

Australia have severely dented the pride of Bangladeshi bowlers and fielders after they humiliated them in all possible manners in the three-match series that ended on Wednesday.
With two convincing wins earlier, Australian have given ample scope to raise questions over the effectiveness of our bowling attack when they posted 361-8 on Wednesday.
In the first match, Bangladesh somehow managed to keep them below 300, but Australia treated them in a ruthless manner in the second and third games with Shane Watson leading the way.
Watson struck them for a world record 15 sixes in the second one-dayer and in the third game he hit them with equal disdain.
Watson had only 230 runs to chase in the second game, so he had to stop on 185 off 96 balls, but on Wednesday only sky was the limit for the Australian vice-captain.
Bangladesh should thank their luck that they somehow managed to get rid of him for 72 off 40 balls, otherwise it looked like he would take Australia to 500-plus total this time.
At the end of innings Australia made only 361-8, but it was no less a humiliation for them as they have never conceded so many runs in a home game, apart from the World Cup opener against India.
At times it was said that Bangladesh’s spin attack was world class and it had been a major threat for any side from outside the Indian subcontinent, especially on home soil.
True the spinners led Bangladesh to 4-0 win against New Zealand and also had Zimbabwe on their toes before the World Cup. England also struggled against them in the World Cup, making the assessment almost into a myth.
But Australia showed if the batting side have some quality Bangladeshi spinners can never be a threat and they hardly know where to land the ball if put under pressure.
And the fast bowlers are also nothing better. Shafiul Islam is being considered as Bangladesh’s best fast bowling option in current form, but skipper Sakib al Hasan did not dare to bowl him for more than two overs in the second one-dayer.
Sakib had little choice on Wednesday and bowled him eight overs in which the paceman conceded as many as 77 runs.
Making a comeback in the side Mashrafee bin Muratza bowled well in patches and with his three wickets he became only second Bangladeshi bowler after Abdur Razzak to take 150 wicket in one-day internationals.
But he too gave away 80 runs in his nine overs, which made it most expensive bowling figures in his career.
Throughout the World Cup, Bangladesh cried only for their batting and in less than two weeks after the tournament ended, it is now the bowling that is giving them the maximum pain.
Sadly for them, they were also let down by their fielding. Watson were given two reprieves in the second one-dayer which could have made his world record innings into an ordinary one.
And they also dropped at least two catches on Wednesday. Mike Hussey was the supreme beneficiary, getting a century after none other than skipper Sakib dropped him on 95.

Dhaka: Bangladesh batsmen showed great gusto to end the three-match Zoom Ultra ODI series on a high note at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. On the day of Jamie Siddons’s last match as Bangladeshi coach, the batsmen responded with ultra aggressiveness to match up with Australian aggression before losing the match by 66 runs as they put up a total of 295 for six in response of Australia’s imposing 361 for eight.
It was Bangladesh’s highest run against Australia and it could make them happy indeed after having a meek surrender in the first two matches.
Sweeping the series by a clean margin, Michael Clarke also started his captaincy on a positive note. Shane Watson, the vice-captain of the side, was adjudged man of the series.
Mike Hussey was at his pinnacle, scoring 108 runs off 91 balls that featured nine fours and two sixes. Watson’s brutal 72 off 40 in a reminiscent of the second ODI was the catalyst to set the ball rolling in Australia’s favour. Former and incumbent skipper duo Ponting and Clarke’s 47 runs each and Johnson’s 24 ball-41 runs cameo helped to propel Australia into the stratosphere.
However, opener Imrul Kayes was the key figure in chasing the daunting total with an impressive 95 ball-93 runs knock which was followed by Tamim plundering the visitors to all corners of the stadium.
Tamim set of on a fiery start when smashed Mitchell Johnson for 10 runs of his first over. Kayes matched with his partner’s aggression, clubbing the new ball bowler John Hasting, who ha taken Brett Lee’s place. However, when Tamim was unable to resist a Johnson yorker, leaving the ground with a 17 ball-32 runs knock, Kayes with the alliance of Shahriar Nafees frustrated Australia with their gritty resistance.
While Kayes found the gaps with ease, Nafees was bit sluggish but yet he kept his wicket intact against Australian bowling which lacked penetration.
In the process the duo frustrated the Australians, leaving skipper Michael Clarke scratching his head till 31 overs. In the meantime, they shared 136 runs which ended as Kayes edged the debutant bowler Pattinson to a catch behind the wicket. During his 93 runs knock, he clobbered 10 fours and two sixes. Losing his partner, Nafees lost the momentum as he top-edged Johnson to sacrifice his wicket at 60.
Later Bangladesh saw a flurry of wickets tumbling with Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan departing in  a quick succession before Mahmuduallha Ryad and Alok Kapali came up with further gritty resistance. Bangladesh, however, played for the pride only as the match was virtually out of control.  Kapali, who played his first game after two and half years could make only 13. But Ryad played some magnificent shots all around the stadium to earn his fifth half-century. He remained unbeaten on 68 off 61 balls that featured five fours and two sixes. It was his highest ODI knock. Johnson took three wickets while Watson took two.
