Ekushey Padak-winning artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury passed away at a hospital in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Sunday. He was 85.
The news of his death was confirmed by the artist’s son, Surajit Chowdhury. Surajit also mentioned how his father’s health had deteriorated over the past three days. Samarjit had been in the hospital since September 5. Initially, he had been taken home after a week.
However, on September 15, he was once again admitted to the hospital due to his poor physical condition. Since then, he had been in the hospital, till his passing today.
Samarjit Roy Chowdhury was born in 1937. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2014, for his contribution to painting.
The body of Samarjit Roy Chowdhury will be kept at the mortuary of the Birdem hospital. On Monday, his body will be brought at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, between 10 am and 11 am, in order for admirers and well-
wishers to say their last goodbyes to the artist. Afterwards, his body will also be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
His final rites will be performed at Sabujbagh crematorium in Dhaka.

New York based Bangladeshi painter Khurshid Alam Saleem’s 47th solo painting exhibition is now on at Galerie in Berlin. The exhibition began on June 24 and will continue till September 24, says a press release.As an abstract expressionist, Saleem concentrates on pure forms and compositions where deep red, emerald green, bright yellow, burning crimson and soothing sapphire have been applied in thick overlapping layers. Large and tiny bars, circles, dashes and round shapes — merging into each other — signify the seasons in Bangladesh. Black and white textures add to the drama of the compositions.
Born in 1951 in Mymensingh, Saleem graduated in drawing and painting from the Institute of Fine Arts (now Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka). He took a special course in advanced colour print at the Department of Art and Art Education, New York University. He has held several solo and group exhibitions in different parts of the world and has received a number of prestigious awards. Saleem was awarded an Olympic medal and torch as an invited artist from the US at the Beijing Olympic 2008.
