Legendary Indian music composer and singer Bappi Lahiri breathed his last today at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 69 years old at the time of passing.
“Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called for a doctor to visit their home. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of the hospital, told PTI.
Beloved by all as ‘Bappi da’, he rose to fame for his work in several films of the 70’s and 80’s, including ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Disco Dancer’, and ‘Sharaabi’.
In April 2021, the musician had tested positive for Covid-19 and was hospitalised as a precautionary measure. However, he was discharged a few days later.
Born on November 27, 1952, Bappi Lahiri popularized disco music in Hindi cinema. Apart from Bollywood, Lahiri was a prominent figure in Bengali cinema, with his noted Bengali films being “Amar Sangee”, “Asha O Bhalobasha”, “Amar Prem”, “Raktelekha”, “Priya”, among many more.
In his last Instagram post, the legendary singer had shared an old photograph of himself captioning it ‘Old is Gold’.
The eminent musician was last heard in 2020, when he sang for “Arey Pyaar Kar Le” and “Bhankas” from “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” and “Baaghi 3”.
He is survived by his son Bappa Lahiri, and daughter Rema Lahiri.
