Bangladesh Cricket Board will replicate the bio-bubble arrangements they provided for Australia in the recently concluded series in the forthcoming home series against New Zealand
The home of cricket in Mirpur once again returned to its usual business. The cricketers started the optional individual training session ahead of the upcoming home series against New Zealand set to begin next month.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das who missed out on the historic five-match T20I series against Australia at home are gearing up for the return and spent time at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium alongside Soumya Sarkar and Shamim Hossain yesterday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has successfully hosted three international series since the pandemic started last year and the board is all set to host the fourth international series with the Kiwis scheduled to arrive in the country on August 24.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand Cricket [NZC] has requested the BCB to provide Covid-19 safety protocol similar to what was in place for the Australian cricket team’s visit earlier this month.
BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed the board is making an effort to create a similar environment for the New Zealand cricket team.
“They have been requesting us to provide the same bio-bubble protocol that was in place for Australia. We will also try to create a similar environment. Like I have said before, the bio-bubble was not to keep only Australia or now New Zealand team safe but our team too. Considering all the facts and practicality we will try to create a complete bio-bubble environment and complete this series too successfully,” Nizamuddin told media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
There will, however, be a change in protocol at the airport in Dhaka this time around where Australia had reached Bangladesh on a chartered flight but New Zealand will be travelling on a commercial carrier.
“New Zealand will be travelling to Dhaka on a commercial flight. So the protocol at the airport will not be the same as it was for Australia. Australia had travelled to Dhaka on a chartered flight. But we will make effort to minimise public contact with the New Zealand team at the airport and transfer them quickly to the hotel. We are planning on it,” he added.
As part of the safety protocols, the tourists have discouraged playing the scheduled warm-up game ahead of the series which was set to take place in BKSP on August 29. All the matches of the five-match series will be played at the SBNS behind closed doors starting from September 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10 respectively.
“When we travel to another country, we look for facilities and practice match to get the team with the foreign condition. Based on this we had offered New Zealand for a practice match [at BKSP]. But this will require an additional bio-bubble at the venue. So they are discouraging this and are pressing for limited movement in Dhaka and successfully complete the series,” said Nizamuddin.
According to the BCB CEO considering the viewership and the local time of New Zealand in mind the board is planning to start the matches at 4 pm local time.

The much-talked about players’ draft programme for recruitment of local and overseas players for the third edition of Bangladesh Premier League will be held today at a city hotel amid chaos.
Though only one franchise has formally announced its name and logo so far, the players will be allotted to six teams much earlier than the original schedule in order to give them more time to gel as a unit.
The original date for the players’ draft was scheduled on October 31, but the BPL authority brought the date forward at least twice following the requests from the franchises.
Around 300 local and international players are to be drafted to the teams through a lottery system, first heard in Bangladesh in 2012-13 when the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced a ‘players-by-choice’ system for the Dhaka Primer League.
Certain overseas players would be dropped from the draft list provided the teams can submit the documents of getting their signature.
As of Wednesday evening, only Rangpur franchise submitted a small list while others were still struggling to get their papers ready. According to the rules a team can sign 13 overseas cricketers, nine of whom could be purchased in individual capacity.
BPL officials however indicated they may finally have to put faith in words of franchise officials as time is limited for
them.
However, all local players, including six icons, must be recruited through players’ draft. The lottery of icon players will be held before the formal players’ draft starts at 10am.
Tamim Iqbal, one of the six icons, said he is ready to play for any franchise though he prefers his hometown Chittagong in the tournament.
‘Everyone wants to play for their home team like someone who is from Dhaka naturally wants to play for Dhaka while I would prefer playing for Chittagong,’ Tamim said at a programme.
‘At the end of the day we all are professionals and we would play where we are destined.
‘We would try to perform well wherever we play. Naturally I would be happy if I play for Chittagong but that does not mean I would be hurt if I play elsewhere.
‘I will try to fulfill the reasons for which they had taken me and want to give my best performance. Let’s wait for tomorrow to see where we play,’ he added.
BCB vice-president Mahbub Anam will conduct the draft ceremony where cricketers are bracketed in four different grades as A, B, C and D.

After the domination of the bowlers on the first day batsmen restored the parity on the second day of all four fourth-round matches of the National Cricket League in different venues on Sunday.

Joyruz Sheikh, who resumed on 49, scored 65, the only 20-plus score in the innings.
In reply, Mehedi Hasan’s run–a-ball 104-run innings put Khulna on a driving seat.
Mehedi added 148 runs in the second wicket with Anamul Haque, who remained unbeaten on 61 at stumps.
Rangpur v Dhaka Metropolis
None of the Rangpur players could make a half-century but their combined efforts took them to 241-6 at stumps after Dhaka Metropolis, who resumed on 217-7, were folded for 242.

During the opening day of the four fourth round matches of the National Cricket league three teams got all-out in their first innings of respective matches at different venues on Saturday.
Despite the batsmen struggled in all four matches on the first day, only one bowler, Iftekhar Sazzad of Chittagong, got five-wicket haul to help dismiss Rajshahi for 208 runs at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
The 28-year old off-spinner picked 5-63 before his side finished the day on 43-0, trailing by 165 runs with all the first innings wickets intact.
In the other Tier-2 match at Bogra, Sylhet ended the day on 45-1 after Barisal were all-out for 155 runs thanks to a four-for of Nasum Ahmed.
Khulna could score only 117 runs against Dhaka at Fatullah before Dhaka scored 77-3 at the stumps. Masum Khan got four wickets for Dhaka.
In the other match of the day, Dhaka Metropolis, the only team not to be folded on the opening day, ended on 211-7 against Rangpur at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.
Chittagong v Rajshahi
Rajshahi won the toss and made a good start to reach 100-1 thanks to a 63-run innings of Nazmul Hossain. But that remained the only half century in the innings while all other batsmen got out cheaply and eventually scored a total of 208.
Iftekhar, the destroyer in chief for hosts, received ample support from Mehedi Hasan Rana and Mohammad Saifuddin who got two wickets each.
In reply, Chittagong openers Tamim Iqbal and Nafees Iqbal were not out on 35 and seven respectively at stumps after they negotiated 14 overs.
Barisal v Sylhet
Barisal innings, which lasted for 55 overs, not only was without a personal half century but also without a fifty partnership.
Al-Amin was the highest scorer with 36 and he made 49-run fourth wicket partnership, the highest in the side’s 155-run innings.
Sylhet lost opener Sayem Alam for 11 but other opener Imtiaz Ahmed and one-down Zakir Hasan was not out on 25 and nine respectively.
Dhaka v Khulna
Despite the rain intervention for several times 13 wickets had fallen in Fatulla in 63.4 overs.
Khulna could survive only 39.4 overs and none of their players could score over 30. Imrul Kayes was the highest scorer with 27.
Masum returned with 8.4-4-11-4 while Ali Ahmed Manik and Mohammad Sharif got two wickets each.
In reply, Dhaka was on 49-3 at stumps. Opener Joyraz Sheikh was not out on 49.
Rangpur v Dhaka Metro
Dhaka Metro got off to a good start with a 41-run opening partnership before two half centurions Shamsur and Asif added 74-run in the second wicket but they lost few quick wickets to end the day on 217-7.
Shamsur and Asif scored 51 and 56 respectively.

The National Cricket League, country’s traditional first-class tournament, will lose some of its gloss when the third round begins today as some top players made themselves unavailable.
The tournament suffered a blow when national one-day and Twenty20 captain Mashrafee bin Murtaza was ruled out with fever at the eleventh hour.Mashrafee was hoping to make a comeback for Khulna against Rangpur with the match to prove his fitness for longer-version cricket.
But he was taken to Apollo Hospital in Dhaka with high fever on Thursday effectively ruled him out of the third round.
BCB physician Debashis Chowdhury said that they are suspecting that Mashrafee has contracted dengue, which means the paceman, who is eying a Test return next year, could be unavailable for the next match as well.
Khulna, who are already without Sakib al Hasan, will also miss the services of Somuya Sarkar, who will be traveling Zimbabwe with the ‘A’ team. Their pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman has also been rested at the advice national team coach Chandika Hathurusinghe.
Members of the Bangladesh ‘A’ team, who are due to leave for their tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe on October 14, will also not take part in the NCL.
Barisal, who will face Chittagong at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, will be denied from the services of their in-form batsman Mosaddek Hossain, who will also be traveling with the ‘A’ team.
Chittagong, however, were still hopeful that Tamim Iqbal would play the match.
Mushfiqur Rahim is expected to return for Rajshahi, who will face Sylhet at Bogra.
Dhaka Metro and Dhaka will play at Fatullah in the other third round match of the day.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board will hold a crucial meeting today with former national captain Naimur Rahman finally getting a chance to raise his voice over certain issues that had undermined his authority as cricket operations chief. Naimur appeared unhappy as BCB president Nazmul Hasan recently overruled some of his recommendations regarding the appointment of Bangladesh ‘A’ team coach and manager.
Naimur wanted Sarwar Imran and Habibul Bashar as coach and manager for the recent India series but Nazmul appointed Heath Streak and Faruk Ahmed for the posts ignoring his recommendations.
Similarly Naimur had preferred Imran and Minhajul Abedin as the coach and manager for the ‘A’ team’s upcoming series against South Africa and Zimbabwe but his recommendations were ignored this time too.
National fielding coach Richard Halsall was selected as the coach while Bashar will be touring as the manager.
Naimur is also irked by the carefree attitude of national coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, who, despite working directly under him, often ignored the former captain allegedly because of his backing from Nazmul.
BCB president Nazmul on the other hand recently rebuked Naimur for his inability to hold a co-ordination meeting compromising with head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and his support staff and the players.
The issues could be up for discussion in what is the 12th board of directors’ meeting since the present committee took over in October 2013.
The meeting was called at a time when Bangladesh’s cricket entered in a crisis period following the postponement of Australia cricket team and South Africa women’s team’s visit.
The BCB is expected to discuss the ramification of the events and its strategy about tackling the situation. The meeting will also finalise issues involving upcoming Bangladesh Premier League.

There was, however, enough play in Khulna between Khulna division and Dhaka division for the hosts to finish their first innings with a lead and visitors’ left arm Spinner Mosharraf Hossain to pick a seven-for.
Mosharraf ended with a 7-119 but the hosts could pile up a total of 340 thanks to 87 of Mohammad Mithun and 53 from Nurul Hasan.
That gave them a lead of 153 runs over Dhaka, who scored 187 run in the first innings, and a total of nine points from the match.
The hosts got two points for scoring over 300 runs, three for getting opponents all out, three for a draw and one for a first innings lead while the visitors earned six points.
National team fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was adjudged man of the match for his four wicket haul for the Khulna.
In the other Tier-1 match at Bogra, not a single ball was bowled on the final day but hosts Rangpur got some extra points as they could at least declare with their overnight score.

The match was called off at 2:15 pm.
Both the teams finished with three points each as the first innings from both the sides could not be completed.
In the other match, hosts Rajshahi salvaged a draw thanks to the rain while they were chasing an improbable score of 370 in the fourth innings of the match against Barisal.
Barisal scored 302 in the first innings before Rajshahi crumbled to 93 all out.
Barisal made 160 runs in the second innings to give Rajshahi a target of 370 and they finished the second day on 25-0 before rain washed away the last two days’ play.
Barisal scored nine points and Rajsahi earned six points from the match.

All the excitements of first round matches of the National Cricket League was dampened as not a single ball could be bowled in any of the four matches in different venues on Sunday.
Torrential rain with the influence of low pressure created in Bay of Bengal is expected to continue today and chance of any further play in the final day is very slim. That would mean all four matches in Bogra, Khulna, Fatullah and Rajshahi are seemingly heading towards draw.
However, Barisal will gain some extra points against Rajshahi even if no further play occurs thanks to their first innings lead.
That is the only match so far that has seen a completion of first innings from both the sides.
Barisal scored 302 in their first innings before folded their opponents for just 93 runs thanks to a 6-31 of Tawhidul Islam.
In second innings they made 160 to set Rajshahi a target of 370 before the hosts made 25-0 at the stumps on day two.
Barisal will gain total of nine points, two for scoring over 300 overs, three for getting opponents all out, three for a draw and one for a first innings lead if the play does not resume. It will also give Rajshahi six points – three for dismissing Barisal and three for draw.
In Bogra at around 12:45 pm umpires called the day off due to incessant rain where Rangpur were on 266-5 replying Dhaka Metropolitan’s first innings score of 238.
Match referee Obayedul Azam called off the day’s play between Khulna Division and Dhaka Division at around 12:30 pm in Khulna.
The match that faced rain interventions even on the second day could not see the completion of the first innings from both the sides.
Khulna was 19 runs away from Dhaka, scoring 168-4 replying 187 of Dhaka.
Bangladesh’s young pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman grabbed 4-29 and veteran left arm spinner Abdur Razzak picked 4-72 to reduce the Dhaka side for a low score and provided three points for Khulna.
On the other match, not even a single innings was completed as Sylhet was on 352-8 against Chittagong at Fatullah.
Only 30.2 overs were played in the second day and the play of the third day was called off at 1:50 pm leaving Chittagong no opportunity to bat even after three days.
The first round matches of NCL were great opportunities for the Bangladesh’s players before the forthcoming two-Test series against Australia scheduled to start on October 5.
But apart from Mustafizur none other could shine with bat or bowl.

Bangladesh ‘A’ team Spinners continued their annihilation on the last day of their four-day match against the West Indies High Performance unit to propel the host to a 52-run victory at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.
The left-arm duo, Saqlain Sajib and Enamul Haque Jr, shared eight wickets between them as the visitors were bowled out for 186 runs in the second innings, chasing 249 runs for a win.
The Windies side began the day knowing that a defeat was round the corner and Enamul made it evident when he picked up the first wicket of the day after the visitors had added 39 runs to their overnight score of 120-6.
Coming in at number eight, Jahmar Hamilton fought a lone battle from one end as he remained unbeaten on 47 from 69 balls but saw his partners make a beehive towards the pavilion and his side being shot out in 57.4 overs.
Saqlain, who resumed the day hoping to pick up a wicket to complete his five-for, claimed the last wicket to complete the win after Enamul had claimed the first three wickets of the day, taking his match tally to 10 wickets.
Saqlain finished with figures of 5-61, while Enamul complemented him with 3-73. Shahadat Hossain and Naeem Islam also grabbed a wicket each. Enamul was later adjudged as the man of the match for his brilliant bowling. Bangladesh women’s team captain Salma Khatun said yesterday after her team’s two-wicket win over South Africa that sometimes a hard-fought victory is sweeter than an easy one.
“We are happy that in the end we won the match. It was not at all easy but sometimes a hard-fought win is much sweeter than an easy win,” said an excited Salma.
“Actually, we are not habituated to playing the kind of quality pace bowling like South Africa has and that’s the reason we struggled to score against them. The more we play the more we will learn, so it is a really important victory for us. We have to work on our batting and hope it will better in the next game,” she added.
Player-of-the-match Lata Mondol however enjoyed batting against the South African attack, but she was a little disappointed as she could not finish off the match.
“It’s a nice win and this success gives us confidence to play much better cricket in the next matches in the series. True, we had to fight hard but ultimately we won the match. Our batters struggled against the South African attack but I enjoyed my batting,” said Lata.
“It could have been much better for me if I could have finished the game,” she added.
South Africa skipper Mignon du Preez was surprised by the behaviour of the pitch and said that they will bounce back in the second match.
“Bangladesh played good cricket and credit must goes to them. We were however surprised as the pitch was not slow and low as we expected. Pace bowlers got the swing. We are confident that we can bounce back in the series,” said a confident du Preez.
