RCC sends letters to RU, archaeology dept
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) took an initiative to turn the historic Dutch building Boro Kuthi near Padma riverbank at Dargahpara into a heritage site.
RCC sent letters in this regard to Rajshahi University authority that owns and uses it as clubs for Rajshahi University teachers, officers and employees and to Archaeology Department for necessary renovation works.
The RCC also asked city dwellers to provide information and documents of the buildings historic importance.
Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton accompanied by Dutch archivists Florus Geraedts and Sigsried Tanzing visited the site on Friday.
The mayor said they discussed plans with Rotary Club of Netherlands that agreed to provide expertise and financial support as the building is important for researchers.
The two-storied Dutch building with 12 rooms was established in Rajshahi during the 18th century, said a RCC letter.
It was used as the centre of silk trade of Dutch and British traders. After the fall of Nawab Siraj-ud Doula in 1757, East India Company purchased it and later in 1833 sold to Robert Watson and Company.
The building was used as the then government’s supply center after the 1947 partition and Rajshahi University acquired it in 1953, added the RCC letter.
