Rangpur Raiders rode on their luck to land coveted Sakib al Hasan as the players’ draft for the third edition of the Bangladesh Premier League held at a city hotel on Thursday.
Riders were lucky throughout the proceeding that was marred by chaos and confusion with the teams struggling to comprehend the complex rules set out by the BPL authority. It was earlier stated that the lottery for the icon players would be held at the beginning but the authority changed their hearts at the last moment and put it at end of the show.
The process began with the lottery for the other players and Rangpur got the first chance to make a call. They picked up Soumya Sarkar and were followed by Dhaka Dynamites, who picked up Mustafizur Rahman.
Chittagong Vikings were the third team in last and they made a surprise call by picking up Anamul Haque.
Barisal Bulls, the next team in the order, grabbed the chance to confirm the signature of Sabbir Rahman, leaving two other sides – Comilla Victorians and Sylhet Superstars – to remain satisfied with Liton Das and Rubel Hossain respectively.
Rangpur were first to make a call for the icon player as well and they wasted no time to pick up Sakib, who was reportedly wanted by all franchises.
Comilla came next and they choose Mashrafee bin Murtaza without any hesitation. Barisal sprang a surprise opting for Mahmudullah when Tamim Iqbal, Nasir Hossain and Mushfiqur Rahim were still available.
It created an opportunity for Chittagong Vikings to take their local icon Tamim in their side. They grabbed the chance with both hands, leaving Sylhet to choose between Mushfiq and Nasir.
Sylhet, who had earlier publicly expressed their admiration for Mushfiq, picked up the Bangladesh Test captain to leave Dhaka without any option but to take Nasir.
A total of 130 players and a host of foreign players were put in lottery but only 76 players, who included 57 local players and 19 foreigners, were lucky to get a team.
Comilla, Barisal and Chittagong picked up 10 local players each while Dhaka, Rangpur and Sylhet picked nine players each.
According to the rules, a team must pick at least 10 local players. But Dhaka, Rangpur and Sylhet were still one player short.
Officials said they will complete the quota from the remaining players.
The maximum quota for local players and foreign players is 13 and 12 respectively. Teams were given a chance to pick maximum nine foreigners outside the draft and it appeared that most of them were going to take this opportunity.
Only Comilla picked up four foreigners in players’ draft while others opted for three each.
The third edition of the Bangladesh premier League Twenty20 is set to get underway from November 22.

The players’ draft for the Bangladesh Premier League third edition came as heartbreak for some seasoned local cricketers as there were no takers for them.
Prodigious leg-spinner Jubair Hossain is among the most prominent cricketers to be overlooked by BPL franchises, who also did not show any interest for Alok Kapali, Marshal Ayub, Farhad Hossain, Roqibul Hassan, Sadman Islam, Tasamul Haque, Mehrab Hossain Jr, Imtiaz Hossain, Sohrawardi Shuvo and Robiul Islam.
Some of these cricketers are scoring heavily in the ongoing National Cricket League as Marshal, Imtiaz, Tasamul scored at least two centuries while Farhad, Sadman, Sohrawardi scored at least one.
The exclusion of Alok Kapali was a kind of surprise considering his ability as a batsman and useful leg spinner.
The BPL governing council selected 130 local players for drafting but only 57 were able to find a team. Only three franchises – Barisal Bulls, Chittagong Vikings and Comilla Victorians — completed their quota of minimum 10 local players while rest of the franchises picked nine players each.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan indicated teams will be allowed to pick some players beyond the draft as provided they have available slots.
The maximum quota for local players is 13.
‘I think some of them will be picked,’ Nazmul told reporters after the draft. ‘But they need to be picked as per their price tag.’
It was learnt that Comilla Victorians moved to confirm Kapali as they lack quality middle-order batsman.

The Bangladesh Premier League players’ draft did not end without dispute on Thursday as two franchises claimed to have picked Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan.
The BPL authority allowed teams to pick maximum nine foreign players outside the draft and asked them to submit a list with proper documents. Both Rangpur Riders and Chittagong Vikings included Dilshan in their list, creating confusion.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan said BPL governing council will now give a ruling over the matter after verifying the documents.
BPL governing council secretary Ismail Haider Mallick said if necessary they will block the player’s participation in this edition.
‘We will look into the matter and have the right to suspend any player from taking part in the tournament,’ said Mallick.
‘It can also happen that a team had paid while the other team could not make it. We cannot comment without judging the documents,’ he said.
Mallick added that teams need to show their agreement papers immediately to make sure they have signed certain cricketer.
Sylhet Superstars are the only defaulter so far in this regard as they are yet to submit any document for any player, though the franchise claimed that they have got the signature of Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, England’s Ravi Bopara, Australia’s Brad Hodge and Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis.
Comilla Victorians claimed to have brought Shoaib Malik and Ahmed Shehzad from Pakistan, Sunil Narine, Marlon Samuels and Krishmar Santokie from West Indies.
Dhaka Dynamites submitted the documents of their correspondence with Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka, Ryan ten Doeschate of Netherlands, Nasir Jamshed, Yasir Shah and Mohammad Irfan of Pakistan.
Barisal Bulls said they have West Indies superstar Chris Gayle at their disposal alongside Zimbabwe’s Brendon Taylor, West Indies’ Kevin Cooper and Evin Lewis.
Chittagong Vikings informed the BPL authority that they have Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Sri Lanka’s Chamara Kapugedara and Elton Chigambura of Zimbabwe.
Rangpur Riders announced that they have picked up former West Indies captain Darren Sammy, opener Lendol Simmons and Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera.
