Powered by an unbeaten 52-ball 79 from Johnson Charles, Comilla Victorians won a record-extending fourth Bangladesh Premier League title as they secured a seven-wicket victory against Sylhet Strikers in the final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

Liton Das had set the tone for Comilla as they began chase of a fighting 176-run target, set up by fifties from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim.

However, despite their flying start, Comilla lost the wickets of Sunil Narine and skipper Imrul Kayes inside the Powerplay. Yet, Liton continued his fine form along with Charles to add 70 for the third wicket and set the platform.

Liton was dismissed after scoring 55 off 39 balls with seven fours and a six before Charles saw the most successful franchise in BPL history to yet another trophy.

Earlier, after being sent to bat, Sylhet were in a spot of bother after in-form batter Towhid Hridoy and skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza — who again promoted himself to No. 3 — were dismissed to leave them struggling on 26 for two in three overs.

Mushfiqur and Shanto then steadied the ship by adding 79 runs for the third wicket before the latter departed for a 45-ball 64 featuring nine fours and a six.

The left-hander, who registered his fourth fifty of the tournament, was the highest run getter of the BPL with 516 runs at a strike rate of 116.74. Shanto also became the first Bangladeshi to score more than 500 runs in a BPL season.

At the other end, Mushfiqur took on responsibility as Sylhet kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with only three batters able to reach double figures.

Mushfiqur ultimately remained unbeaten on 74 off 48 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes as Sylhet added 41 runs in the last four overs of the innings.

Left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman picked up two wickets while Andre Russell, Tanvir Islam, Sunil Narine and Moeen Ali took a wicket each for Comilla.

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 Governing Council has asked seven companies to complete the process of acquiring franchise ownership for the next three (9th, 10th and 11th) editions of the league on Sunday, according to a press release from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Although there were rumours, two of the most successful franchises, Dhaka Dynamites and Khulna Titans, did not take the team in the end.

According to the BCB Governing Council, Pragati Green Auto Rice Mills Limited has got the ownership of Dhaka instead of Beximco. Mindtree Limited will own the Khulna team. The Barisal franchise is under the ownership of Fortune Barisal Sports Limited.

Besides, the Chattogram team will be run by Delta Sports Limited, Togi Sports Limited (Basundhara Group) has got the ownership of Rangpur. Future Sports Bangladesh Limited is in charge of Sylhet.

Among the well-known franchises is the defending champion Comilla Victorians, which will be owned by Comilla Legends Limited.

The eighth and last edition of the BPL was held in January-February of this year, featuring six franchises. Comilla Victorians won the championship for the third time after defeating Fortune Barishal in the final.

The ninth edition, with seven franchises, will take place in January-February of next year. In fact, the ICC has reserved the next three tournaments for these seven franchises.

Comilla Victorians won their hat-trick title in the Bangladesh Premier League with a one-run win in a thrilling final against Fortune Barishal at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Friday.
Defending ten runs off the last over and three off the last ball, Comilla’s pacer Shohidul Islam pulled off a successful one as Barishal were restricted at 150 for eight after 20 overs while trying to chase 152 runs.
Barishal had the upperhand in the majority of the chase as they rode on a brilliant 34-ball 58-run knock from Shykat Ali, striking eleven fours and a six, while Chris Gayle anchored the innings with 33 runs off 31 balls. The two added 74 for the second wicket but quick wickets in the middle meant that Shakib Al Hasan’s side ended up falling short of the target in the nail-biter finale. Shakib missed out on the ocassion as the ace player was run out on just seven.
Sunil Narine gave away just two runs and picked up a wicket in the 18th over, which was cruicial for Comilla in clinching the victory. Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam also bagged two while Mustafizur Rahman scalped one for the Victorians.
Earlier, despite opener Narine’s blistering fifty, Comilla was unable to capitalise on the flying start and eventually managed to post a half-decent 151 for 9 in 20 overs after electing to bat.
Narine continued from where he left off in the second Qualifier as the lefty struck four sixes and two fours in the first two overs of the innings, piling 36 runs for his side. Liton Das, however, perished after scoring four at the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan but Narine kept the tempo on to reach his fifty off just 21 deliveries.
The West Indian was eventually dismissed by Mehedi Hasan Rana after a 23-ball 57, laced with five maximums and five fours but the foundation had been laid for Comilla, who appeared comfortably placed at 73 for 2 after the Power-play.
However, Barishal bounced back with conviction, which resulted in a flurry of wickets as Comilla slumped to 65 for six after 10.3 overs. Comilla, in the end, were able to surpass the 150 mark as Moeen Ali and Abu Hider Rony stitched a 54-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Moeen was run out after scoring 38 off 32 balls while Rony was dismissed on 19.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Shafiqul Islam bagged two wickets each while Shakib, Dwayne Bravo and Rana scalped one apiece for Barishal.

Mashrafe bin Murtaza returned to the field after a long absence with BPL. However, his return was not pleasant. Mashrafe’s team Minister Group Dhaka has conceded a big loss of 7 wickets against Sylhet Sunrisers in their BPL fixture in Mirpur on Tuesday. This is Dhaka’s third loss in four matches in the current edition. And Sylhet’s first win in two matches.
The Former Bangladesh captain had last played a competitive match in December 2020 when he appeared for Khulna in Bangabandhu T20 Cup. In the final of the tournament on December 18, Mashrafe had gone wicketless for 40 runs with the ball and scored just five.
The 38-year-old pacer returned much fitter yesterday and although he could score only two runs, he bagged two out of the three opposition wickets.
After being asked to bat, Dhaka could only post 100 before being bowled out in 18.4 overs, with captain Mahmudullah top-scoring with 33 and Shuvagata Hom adding 21.
Former national team spinner Nazmul Islam Apu bagged four wickets for 18 runs.
The chase was smooth from Sylhet, who lost three wickets and needed 17 overs to reach the target. Anamul Haque top-scored with 45 for Sylhet. While Mashrafe didn’t find much support from the other end, the wily pacer showed his guile with two wickets for 21 runs, accounting for Lendl Simmons and Anamul.

An ideal team performance earned Chattogram Challengers their second win in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League as they defeated Khulna Tigers by 25 runs in the evening game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday.
Opener Kennar Lewis struck 25 off 14 balls to set the tone at the top while Benny Howell made an unbeaten 34 off 20 balls and skipper Mehidy Hasan scored 30 0ff 23 balls to power Chattogram to 190-7 in 20 overs.
In reply, Khulna could only make 165-9 in their 20 overs with Yasir Ali top-scoring with 40 off 26 balls.
Just like the batting department, there was no standout performer among the Chattogram bowlers as Mehidy, Rezaur Rahman and Shoriful Islam bagged two wickets each.
Sent to bat, Chattogram’s opening duo of Lewis and Will Jacks took 23 runs off the very first over bowled by Sohrawordi Shuvo.
Jacks struck a quickfire 17 off seven balls before falling to Kamrul in the second over.
Lewis also fell to the same bowler but only after taking the team to 52 in just 3.4 overs.
Afif Hossain (15 off 13 balls) didn’t hang around too long and then Mehidy and Sabbir added 48 runs for the fourth wicket in a steady partnership.
The innings lost some momentum with the departures of Mehidy and Sabbir, who made 32 off 33 balls, but for the third match in a row Howell came with the goods for them in the slog overs.
Perusing a daunting 191, Khulna found themselves reduced to 76-4 inside 12 overs, with the required rate already edging towards 14 runs per over.
Yasir and Sikander Raza, who came in as the concussion substitute for Andre Fletcher who got hit on the head by a bouncer from Rejaur in the seventh over and left the field as retired hurt, tried their best, with a 43-run partnership off just 24 balls.
Rejaur broke the stand by removing Sikander, who made 22 off 12 balls, and just one ball later he dismissed Thisara Perera for a duck.
Yasir played till the 19th over, but could only reduce the margin of defeat.

Mahmudullah played a captain’s knock while Andre Russell played a whirlwind innings to guide Minister Group Dhaka to a four-wicket win over Fortune Barishal at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Monday, their first win in the eighth Bangladesh Premier League after two defeats.
Mahmudullah made a run-a-ball 47 while Russell smashed an unbeaten 31 off just 15 balls to take Dhaka to 130-6 in 17.3 overs.
Shafiqul Islam, Alzarri Joseph bagged two wickets each inside the first three overs for Barishal but Dhaka eventually got over the line with relative ease.
Earlier, Chris Gayle, who came out to bat at five, top-scored for Barishal with 36 off 30 balls and Bravo remained undefeated on 33 off 26 balls to take Barishal to 129-8 after they were asked to bat first.
For Dhaka, Russell and Isuru Udana claimed two wickets each.
Chasing a convenient 130, Dhaka’s top order collapsed like a deck of cards as they were reduced to 10-4 in just 2.5 overs.
Opener Tamim Iqbal, who earned consecutive fifties in Dhaka’s first two games, was dismissed for a duck by young paceman Shafiqul Islam.
His fellow opener Mohammad Shazad (five off seven balls) was also outdone by an in-swinging fuller length delivery from the same bowler while Mohammad Naim and Jahurul Islam fell to Joseph for four and 0 respectively.
From the precarious situation, Mahmudullah and Shuvagata Hom rescued their side with a 69-run stand for the fifth wicket.
The partnership ended when Shuvagata was bowled by Bravo for 29 off 25 balls.
Dhaka still needed 51 runs off 41 balls when Russell came to the middle and with the help of three fours and two sixes ensured his team would go on to win their first match in the tournament.
Mahmudullah and Russell together added 50 runs off just 25 balls and the partnership ended when Mahmudullah got caught out off Shakib with scores on level. Udana took the winning run.
Earlier, Barishal’s innings never quite took off, as they lost three wickets inside the first six overs with only 24 runs on the board.
In the fourth wicket stand, Shakib and Chris Gayle added 37 runs to reconstruct the innings but the partnership ended when the former gave a catch behind the stumps off Rubel Hossain after scoring 23 off 19 balls.
Nurul Hasan, who couldn’t feature in the first two games due to being Covid positive, departed for just one run.
Gayle then added 33 runs for the sixth wicket with Bravo, but before he could emerge at his destructive best, Udana knocked out his stumps.
Bravo remained there till the end to push the total over 120.

Nasum Ahmed’s economic bowling and a four-wicket haul from Shoriful Islam helped Chattogram Challengers to a 30-run win over Minister Group Dhaka in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.
Nasum took 3-9 while Shoriful bagged 4-34 to bundle out Dhaka for 131 in 19.5 overs.
Tamim Iqbal was the lone Dhaka player to show some fight, scoring 52 off 45 balls, his econd consecutive fifty in the BPL, but the failures of the other batters led to the sides’ second consecutive defeat.
Earlier, opener Will Jacks scored a quickfire 42 off 24 balls and Benny Howell struck a whirlwind 37 off 19 balls to catapult Chattogram to 161-8 after they were asked to bat first.
Rubel Hossain claimed three wickets while Arafat Sunny, Isuru Udana, Shuvagata Hom and Mahmudullah took one wicket each.
Chasing a challenging 163, Dhaka’s opening pair of Tamim and Mohammad Shahzad made an ideal start, accounting 42 runs inside the power play.
But they couldn’t carry on the momentum once Shahzad departed, giving a catch to Shamim Hossain after scoring a sluggish nine off 12 balls.
Tamim and Jahurul Islam (10 off 12 balls) then added 30 runs for the second wicket but once the former departed off Shoriful Islam, Dhaka lost their way.
From 73-1, Dhaka were reduced to 83-5 after 13.5 overs in a matter of 15 deliveries with Shoriful and Nasum both taking two wickets each.
Dhaka’s hopes were pinned on Andre Russell (12 off 10 balls), but the West Indian skied one of Nasum’s delivery in an attempt to hit a six, which Shamim Hossain gleefully accepted.
In the late order, 16 runs came from Udana’s bat, which only lessened the margin of defeat.
Earlier, Chattogram Challengers lost opener Kemar Lewis (two off nine balls) in just the third over, with Rubel Hossain trapping him leg-before wicket.
But Jacks went great guns in the powerplay, hitting six fours and two sixes to make sure Chattogram reached 50-1 after six overs.
Chattogram innings lost some momentum when Shuvagata Hom removed Jacks and a dangerous looking Sabbir Rahman also departed for 29 off 17 balls off Rubel.
But the lusty blows from Howell took them to a challenging total, which proved to be more than enough in the end.

Star studded Comilla Victorians barely edged past Sylhet Sunrisers in a low-scoring encounter, winning by two wickets while chasing 97 runs in both sides opening match in the Bangladesh Premier League on Saturday.
The Sylhet bowlers forced Comilla to bat till 18.4 overs to chase the puny target on an exceedingly slow track at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
For Comilla, Karim Janat scored the highest 18 off 13 balls while Nahidul Islam and Cameron Delport chipped in with 16 each but a lack of determination from the batters to see off the game themselves nearly cost them the match.
Nazmul Islam Apu took three wickets while Mosaddek Hossain, Sohag Gazi two and Taskin Ahmed bagged one wicket each.
Earlier, the Comilla bowlers ran rampant and bundled out Sylhet for a sorry 96 runs in 19.1 overs.
Mustafizur Rahman, Nahidul Islam and Shohidul Islam claimed two wickets each on a pitch that offered movement for pacers and turn for the spinners.
For Sylhet, Collin Ingram top-scored with 20 off 21 balls while Ravi Bopara and Sohag chipped in with 17 off 19 balls and 12 off 19 balls respectively.
Chasing mere 97 runs, Comilla lost their top five batters for 55 in 10.2 overs.
In the sixth wicket stand, Nahidul and Karim added 27 runs that got them closer to the target.
But Karim fell to Taskin and Ingram caught Nahidul at point off Nazmul in the following over, reducing Comilla to 84-7 in 14.2 overs.
Nazmul then dismissed Shohidul Islam for one in the 17th over and Mosaddek Hossain gave away only two runs in the next over, leaving Comilla six runs to chase in 12 balls with two wickets in hand.
But Kesrick Williams couldn’t sustain that pressure in the 19th over, allowing Tanvir and Mahidul Islam to take a couple of singles each in the first four balls and then bowling two consecutive wides, which sent Comilla over the line with eight balls in hand.
Mahidul and Tanvir remained unbeaten on nine and three respectively.

Rony Talukdar’s brilliant half-century and two bludgeoning knocks from Andre Fletcher and Thisara Perera at either ends of the innings catapulted Khulna Tigers to a five-wicket win over Minister Group Dhaka in the evening match on the opening day of the eighth Bangladesh Premier League on Friday.
Rony made 61 off 42 balls, Fletcher struck 45 off just 23 balls and Perera laid the finishing touches with an unbeaten 36 off 18 deliveries to take the team to 186-5 in 19 overs on a dew-soaked Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Earlier, Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Shahzad made 50 off 42 balls and 42 off 27 balls respectively while skipper Mahmudullah struck a quickfire 39 off 20 balls to take Dhaka to a daunting 183-6 in 20 overs, which proved insufficient.
Chasing 184, Khulna lost opener Tanzid Hasan for one but Fletcher and Rony gave their team the explosive start they required by forming a 72-run second wicket stand off just 34 balls.
Russell removed Fletcher and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim also didn’t hang around too long, falling to Ebadot Hossain for six.
Ebadot brought Dhaka back in the match by removing Rony in the 15th over but Perera then took the onus upon himself, struck six fours all across the ground to get his team over the line with six balls to spare.
Earlier, sent to bat, Dhaka openers Tamim and Shahzad formed a 69-run partnership off 49 balls, which came to an end when the latter, who had struck eight fours all across the ground, paid the price for his lethargic running and got run out.
Dhaka then cruised to 109-1 after 13 overs, before Khulna fought back with three big wickets in quick successions.
Tamim gave a catch to Kamrul Islam at mid-wicket off Naveen-ul-Haq, Mohammad Naim (nine off 11 balls) misread a slower delivery from Thisara Perera that crashed onto his stumps and Andre Russell got dismissed in a bizzare manner.
In the 15th over, Russell nudged a ball off Perera to the off-side and took off for a single.
Mahedi Hasan, stationed at point, got a direct hit at the striker’ end which ricocheted from the stumps, changed its direction and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, to the shock of an unsuspecting Russell who was a few feet away from safety.
Mahmudullah struck two sixes and a four in the last two overs as Dhaka scored 32 runs off the last two overs.

Shykat Ali set up the chase and Ziaur Rahman completed it for Fortune Barishal as they defeated Chattogram Challengers by four wickets in the opening match of the eighth Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Friday.
Shykat made 39 off 35 balls while Ziaur struck two fours and a six to make 19 not out off 12 balls to take Barishal to 126-6 in 18.4 overs.
Skipper Mehidy Hasan led the charge with the ball for his team with figures of 4-16 and almost turned the match on its head on the 15th over which yielded three wickets but at the end the team from the port city didn’t have enough runs to defend.
Earlier, Benny Howell’s quickfire 41 off 20 balls late down the order pushed Chattogram to 125-8 after they were asked to bat first.
Pacer Alzarri Joseph claimed 3-32 while off-spinner Nayeem Hasan took 2-25 for Barishal but it was skipper Shakib Al Hasan and left-arm wrist spinner Jake Lintott’s economical bowling that clipped the wings of the Chattogram innings.
Shakib finished with 1-9 and Lintott ended up with 1-18 in their quota of overs.
Chasing 126, Barishal hobbled to 28-2 at the end of the first six overs, having lost the wickets of Nazmul Hossain Shanto (one off six balls) and skipper Shakib (13 off 16 balls), both falling to Mehidy.
Shykat then formed a 34 and 30-run partnerships with Towhid Hridoy (16 off 17 balls) and Irfan Sukkur (16 off 13 balls) respectively.
Barishal were cruising to a victory before Mehidy dismissed Shykat and Irfan in consecutive deliveries and then Afif Hossain ran out Salman Hossain for a duck in the last ball of the same over to reduce Barishal to 92-6 after 15 overs.
But Ziaur didn’t allow a twist at the tail, as he smashed Mukidul Islam for a couple of boundaries and a six in the 17th over, leaving only 12 runs to be chased off the remaining 18 balls.
Ziaur, with Dwayne Bravo unbeaten on 12 off 10 balls at the other end, rightfully took the last run to complete the chase with eight balls in hand.
In the first innings, opener Will Jacks was the lone batter in Barishal’s first five batters to get into double figures, before departing for 16 off 20 balls off Lintott in the ninth over with score on 42-4.
Naeem Islam (15 off 18 balls) and Shamim Hossain (14 off 23 balls) tried to build a launching pad for the final overs but couldn’t kick on with their innings.
But Howell stepped up to the plate and his lusty blows gave Chattogram bowlers something to defend, which proved insufficient in the end.
