Organisers of the Razzie Awards, which are given to the year’s worst films, have cancelled the recent “honour” they gave to actor Bruce Willis after backlash following the actor’s shock diagnosis.
On Wednesday, his family revealed he has the brain disorder aphasia.
The Razzies’ founders, John Wilson and Mo Murphy, said in a statement the Razzies “have made the decision to rescind the Razzie Award given to Bruce Willis, due to his recently disclosed diagnosis”.
Willis was nominated for Razzie awards, a parody award show honouring the worst of cinematic under-achievements, for eight performances in movies released in 2021.
The “Die Hard” actor even got his own “special category” in this year’s Razzies, for “Worst Performance by Bruce Willis”.
This week, it was revealed Willis will retire from acting after he was diagnosed with aphasia, a brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate.
“If someone’s medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie,” the statement, sent to the New York Post by the Razzies founders, continued.
They will also take back The Shining’s Shelley Duvall’s Razzie as well.
“As we recently mentioned in a Vulture interview, extenuating circumstances also apply to Shelley Duvall in ‘The Shining’,” they added in the statement.
“We have since discovered that Duvall’s performance was impacted by Stanley Kubrick’s treatment of her throughout the production. We would like to take this opportunity to rescind that nomination as well.”
The awards also tweeted an apology to Willis after the announcement of his diagnosis.
The Razzies are truly sorry for #BruceWillis diagnosed condition. Perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family.

The family of Bruce Willis has announced the actor is set to retire after being diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder typically occurring after a stroke or brain injury, significantly affects a person’s ability to communicate. On March 30, the 67-year-old actor’s family announced the news via an Instagram post with an update on Willis’s health.
“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” Willis’s family wrote in a caption alongside a photo of him. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”
Willis’s family expressed their gratitude to the actor’s fans for their “continued love, compassion and support” during this difficult time. They added that they “wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him,” before concluding their message with a quote from Willis. “As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.” The note was signed by Willis’s daughters — Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn Willis — as well as his wife, Emma Heming Willis, and ex-wife Demi Moore.
Willis has starred in dozens of films and TV shows over his 40-plus year acting career. The actor is most known for leading the “Die Hard” film franchise, while starring in other iconic films like “Pulp Fiction,” “The Fifth Element,” “The Sixth Sense,” and “Sin City.” His accolades include a Golden Globe and an Emmy award in 1987 for starring “Moonlighting.” He also won an Emmy in 2000 for starring on “Friends.”
