Inland waterways and district administration authorities stopped earth-filling and removed boundary walls built by some encroachers on the river Buriganga at the city’s Mohammadpur yesterday.
Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) along with Dhaka district administration conducted the drive along around 700 metre embankment of the river in Ramchandrapur mouja as part of ongoing drive against river grabbing.
Md Selim Hossen, executive magistrate of Dhaka district administration, who led the eviction team, said they evicted six encroachers — colonel Moin, captain Mahbub, one Monir Hossain, Concord Group, a real estate company and Abdul Monem Limited, a construction company.
The said individuals and companies garbed the river mostly by earth-filling, setting boundary walls and pillars and building makeshift structures, said Md Sharif Afzal Hossain, deputy director of BIWTA.
Monir Hossain earth-filled a 500-foot long and 30-foot wide stretch of the river, he added. The magistrate confiscated a dredger and sand he used for the filling.
The team partially removed construction materials of Concord, said the magistrate.
On appeal, he allowed the company two days to remove them.
The drive continues today.
