Carlos Tevez and Manchester City have been inadvertently dragged into a sensational match-fixing scandal.
While there is absolutely no suggestion either the player or the club have done anything wrong, a Greek court is examining evidence that City’s Europa League game against Aris in February was the target of a betting coup.
Incredibly, prosecutors have presented extracts of a phone conversation in which one of the Greek team’s players claims Tevez would be approached to help them pull off the sting.
Aris midfielder Kostas Mendrinos is heard suggesting he could ask his team-mate – former City player Nery Castillo – to persuade Tevez to let the Greek side kick off.
It is believed a bet of nearly £6,000 would be placed.
Mendrinos allegedly said: “I will speak in all probability with Castillo to go and get Tevez, who is the captain, and we will also have told Koke (Aris captain) probably here for kick-off.”
The taped conversation emerged after Greek secret police bugged the phones of dozens of players and club officials they suspected might be involved in match fixing.
Tevez last night denied any knowledge of, or involvement in, the alleged scam.
His spokesman insisted: “It is impossible. Carlos has never heard such a thing and no one ever approached him.”
And City last night pointed out that Tevez and Castillo never played together as the Mexican winger’s loan period in England ended a year before the Argentinian hitman left Manchester United for Eastlands.
The Greek court still has not established exactly what happened or what precisely the Aris players involved were betting on.
Aris captain Koke, mentioned in the tape, did not even play as keeper Michalis Sifakis replaced him as skipper.
Although Sifakis won the toss he elected which half to play in, leaving City to kick off in a match which ended 0-0.

Striker Carlos Tevez, who seemed to be out of Argentina’s Copa America plans little more than a month ago, has been named in the hosts’ 23-man squad for the tournament.
There were no surprises among coach Sergio Batista’s selections, posted on the Argentine Football Association’s website five days after their last warm-up – a 4-0 rout of Albania at the Monumental.
Batista dropped three home-based players from those named in his provisional squad – Boca Juniors defender Luciano Monzon, Lanus midfielder Diego Valeri and Estudiantes winger Enzo Perez.
Goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo of River Plate, on loan from Lazio, is the only man in the squad to have played his club football in Argentina this season.
Tevez was dropped by Batista last year over a no-show for a friendly against arch-rivals Brazil in Qatar which Argentina won 1-0 with a goal by Lionel Messi.
However, the coach and player had a heart-to-heart and Tevez, who last season became the first Argentine to finish as top goalscorer in the Premier League, was included in Batista’s provisional 26-man squad on June 1.
Squad
Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (AZ Alkmaar), Mariano Andujar (Catania), Juan Pablo Carrizo (River Plate)
Defenders: Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Nicolas Burdisso (AS Roma), Nicolas Pareja, Marcos Rojo (both Spartak Moscow), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona), Ezequiel Garay (Real Madrid)
Midfielders: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan), Lucas Biglia (Anderlecht), Ever Banega (Valencia), Fernando Gago, Angel Di Maria (both Real Madrid), Javier Pastore (Palermo)
Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), Diego Milito (Inter Milan), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli)

Bangladesh Football Federation finally signed a contract with the Celebrity Management Group (CMG) on Saturday which confirms Bangladesh as the hosts of Argentina’s friendly match against Nigeria scheduled for September 6.
CMG, an Indian event management group, is the rights holder of the two matches Argentina will play on September 2 and 6 against Venezuela and Nigeria respectively and they handed over the rights of the second match to the BFF with the day’s contract.
The BFF had to splash out a big amount of cash for hosting the game and though the federation officials did not reveal the exact amount of money they paid to CMG, it will be not less than Tk 30 crore. Bhashwar Goswami, the executive director of CMG, and BFF president Kazi Salahuddin signed the agreement for their respective organisations at a programme at the BFF Bhaban.
Beximco Group, as the main sponsor of this big event, will bear all the expenses including the match-right price. The BFF has also signed a deal with Beximco in this respect where Shayan F Rahman, director of the corporate house, was present.
Beximco also will pay for all promotional activities but the profit (if any) from the match will go to the BFF’s fund which will be used for the development of youth football.
Salahuddin assured the media of participation of the big stars like Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Angel de Maria of Argentina and Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel saying that it has been included in the agreement.
The BFF president thinks this big match occasion will make the young generation interested in the game.
‘I wanted to organise the game at any cost because it will inspire our future footballers. It is not a wild dream but we also have the ability to be a Messi or Tevez,’ he said.
Beximco director Shayan termed the match as a milestone of the nation’s football and expressed his delight to be a part of it.
‘This is a turning point of the nation’s football and we are very happy to be a part of that. It is duty of all corporate houses to guide the youth in the right direction,’ he said.
Salahuddin assured the fans of a fair ticket distribution process though the ticket prices have yet to be decided.
‘The tickets for the match will be sold in a clean process like it is done in Spain or England and we will fix the prices when we will be sure about the total budget of the match,’ he said.
