Hosts Chittagong Abahani kept their semi-final hopes alive in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup owing to their 1-0 win over Dhaka Abahani at the MA Aziz Stadium on Thursday.
Winger Zahid Hossain struck the decisive goal in the 47th minute to give the home side their first win in the tournament after they lost their opening match to East Bengal by a solitary margin.
Indian champions East Bengal confirmed their semi-final berth with a comfortable 3-1 over Pakistan champions Karachi Electric Club in the day’s first match at the same venue.
The defeat jeopardised Dhaka Abahani’s chance of advancing to the semi-finals as they now must beat East Bengal in their last match and hope the result of the other game also comes in their favour.
With back-to-back wins, the Kolkata giants East Bengal are now leading Group-B with six points from two matches while Dhaka Abahani and Chittagong Abahani both are level with three points.
Karachi Electric Club are yet to open their account.
East Bengal took control of the first match over their Pakistani rivals from the first minute of the match and took a comfortable 3-0 lead within 50 minutes.
TheI-League champions opened their account in the 15th minute through their Nigerian midfielder Orok Essien.
Abhinash Ruidas provided a low cross for Essien from the right-flank and the Nigerian made no mistake to beat Pakistani goalkeeper Ghulam Nabi with a diving header from six-yard box.
Two minutes later, Karachi Electric came close to level the margin but a poor shot from Muhammad Raiz could not trouble East Bengal goalkeeper Dibyendu Sarkar.
Mohammad Rafique doubled the lead for the Indians with a powerful drive in the 25th minute after a cut-back from Essien.
Both Electric and East Bengal came close to strike on the half-hour-mark but Dibyendu denied Mohammad Essa while Nigerian Ranti Martin rattled the crossbar of Electric.
Electric got off to a fine start in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 49th minute through Riaz only for his attempt to be cancelled out for off-side.
East Bengla put the decisive blow by scoring the third goal in the 50th minute.
Midfielder Subodh Kumar provided a long ball for Essien, who darted into the box to square it to Ranti and the Nigerian striker tapped in to make it 3-0.
Muhammad Rasool struck the consolation goal in the 84th minute from a close range for the Pakistani champions.

Veteran coach Shafiqul Islam Manik will take charge of premier league outfit Chittagong Abahani for the upcoming season, having spent this season away from coaching. The former Mohammedan SC and Muktijoddha Sangsad coach, who stepped down from the job of the All Reds at the end of last season, confirmed the news to reporters on Sunday. “People have been a bit surprised that I am taking charge of a club which is not among the top, having previously coached clubs like Mohammedan and Muktijoddha. But I have had detailed conversation with the club’s chairman, Ruhul Amin, over the last two weeks and I have been impressed by his football ambitions and his plans of taking the side to a higher level,” said the veteran coach.
“I have been asked to form a strong squad and hopefully we will recruit good players in the preseason transfer window and the youth program for the upcoming season,” Manik hoped.
Chittagong Abahani are currently in 10th position in the 11-team Bangladesh Premier League, only above already-scrapped Farashganj SC. Ahsanuzzaman Jhantu is currently the coach of the port city side.

Brothers Union completed their first-leg phase of the Bangladesh Premier League with a 2-0 win over Chittagong Abahani at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday. Haitian forward Augustine Walson scored two late second-half goals for the Gopibagh outfit to be placed third in the points table with 20 points, three less than table toppers Skeikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.Mohammedan also have the same number of points but they remained in the second position due to a better goal difference.
Russell Krira Chakra, who also have 20 points were toppled by Brothers because of a superior goal difference while Chittagong Abahani remained on tenth with five points.
Augustine continued his fine form and took his individual tally to 11 goals that put him right on top of the goal scorers list.
The in-from former Haitian international, who scored both the goals from set-pieces, again proved his superb ability from the dead-ball situation.
Brothers Union dominated the first-half but the only thing they missed is scoring.
Chittagong defender Kaushik Barua made a goal-line clearance in the 23rd minute after Augustine attempted a goal bound backheel on an Ebayed Hossain Komol corner.
Forward Shafaetur Rahman wasted a great chance to give Chittagong Abahani the lead in the 54th minute as he saw his shot went inches away of the goalpost.
Brothers’ Cameroonian Midfielder Germain Kenfack blew away a bright chance in the 63rd minute as his attempt went over the cross bar following an Augustine cross from the left.
Brothers could have taken the lead in the 65th minute but Augustine saw his curling effort from top of the box hit the side bar.
Walson, however, showed his fine technique from dead ball to give Brothers a deserved lead four minutes later.
The Haitian unleashed a curling free-kick from the left flank that found the back of the net past Chittagong keeper Shohag Hossain.
Walson doubled the margin again from a curving free-kick in the 83rd minute.
In the stoppage time, two goal-line saves from Pradip Barua and Saiful Islam Khokon restricted Walson to record his second hat-trick in the league.
Meanwhile, the second match of the day between Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra and Farashganj Sporting Club were postponed after 40 minutes due to heavy downpour at the same venue.
The match will resume today at 7:15pm while Friday’s scheduled match between Team BJMC and Feni Soccer Club has been shifted to Saturday.
