Newly-appointed Bangladesh national team coach Stuart Law is not quite an unknown figure to the players as some of them already have the experience of playing against him.
Law, currently working as the interim coach of Sri Lanka, was named as the new head coach of the Tigers on Monday, replacing compatriot Jamie Siddons.
The announcement created ripples in the national team’s conditioning camp in Cox’s Bazar, where they are undergoing rigorous fitness training under Law.
‘Oh yes, many of us know Law,’ said an excited all-rounder Naeem Islam when he was contacted over phone from Dhaka.
‘When we were in England playing for the A team he played for MCC against us. Tamim, Sakib and me played against him,’ said Naeem.
Top-order batsman   Shahriar Nafees and discarded wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh even have the experience of facing Law in competitive cricket in the rebel Indian Cricket League.
Shahriar, who played for Dhaka Warriors in the ICL, played a game against Law, who was representing Chennai Superstars in the league.
‘He may not be a very prominent figure in international cricket but he has a substantial track record in the domestic circuit,’ said Shahriar.
‘It only suggests his good ability in cricket,’ said the southpaw.
‘He will be a fighter and I am eagerly waiting to start our new journey with him,’ he said.
Abdur Razzak, the experienced left-arm spinner, had a chance to meet the Australian while he came to Dhaka with the Sri Lanka team.
‘I saw him once when he came to Dhaka with the Sri Lanka team. However, we did not talk much other than exchanging greetings,’ he said.
‘He had played cricket at the highest level, so he knows what is needed to be successful. I am sure he will try everything possible to take us to the next level,’ he said.
Not every cricketer, however, is familiar with Law, a member of Australia’s 1996 World Cup team, who played a Test and 54 one-day-internationals.
Imrul Kayes is the one, who admitted he has got very little idea about the new coach. Kayes improved his game heavily under the previous coach, Jamie Siddons, and is expecting the same sort of assistance from Law if not better.
‘Though I don’t know much about him, I am sure he would likely want to see a great commitment in us and encourage us to work hard,’ he said.
‘I am ready to give everything as I can to fulfil his demand,’ said Kayes, who missed a century against Law’s countrymen in Bangladesh’s last international match.

Full name: Stuart Grant Law
Born: October 18, 1968, Brisbane, Australia.
Teams: Australia, Chennai Superstars, Derbyshire, Essex, Lancashire and Queensland.
Nickname: Lawman; The Judge The most successful captain in Australian domestic cricket
Went past 1,000 runs in every English season from 1999 to 2003
Began his coaching stint with Sri Lanka in 2009
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially confirmed on Monday that former Australian cricketer Stuart Law will be instated as the next head coach of the Tigers.
BCB’s media committee chairman Jalal Yunus announced at a hurriedly called press conference yesterday that they had appointed the 42-year old Australian, who has played one Test and 54 one-day internationals, as the head coach for the next two years starting from July 1.
Law, who had served as Sri Lanka’s assistant coach under Trevor Bayliss since 2009 and took charge of the team on a temporary basis specifically for the tour of England, will succeed his compatriot Jamie Siddons, whose contract was not renewed after the World Cup.
The official announcement of the appointment of Law as head coach came not before much drama. The board was apparently forced to make the early announcement yesterday after Law himself disclosed it in a leading Bengali daily, Prothom Alo.
It was all but confirmed after board’s executive committee meeting on June 4 that Law was to become the new head coach but the board had been dilly-dallying with the announcement as they waited for a final agreement.
It seemed that the board was embarrassed by Law’s announcement as there was a mutual commitment to jointly make the announcement. Jalal however was diplomatic when asked whether they were upset by the first act of Law.
“There was supposed to be a joint announcement. I can’t say why exactly it happened. It might be because of the time difference. I wouldn’t say we are embarrassed. May be the early announcement came from him because he was excited,” explained Yunus.
“After May 30, it was almost confirmed because he (Law) was quite interested to take the job and as well as he made the commitment. We have some bitter experience in the past that’s why we were waiting for the signing of the agreement. What I can assure you is that he signed the paper,” he added.
Yunus informed that Law will quit the position of Sri Lanka’s interim coach after the five-match ODI series against England and will join the Bangladesh team as soon as possible.
“After July 9, he will go to Sri Lanka to complete all the formalities and after that he will come back to England where he is settled with his family.
“We are expecting him to join the team before the Zimbabwe tour and if it’s not possible than he will join the team directly there. It may not be possible for him to join the team here as you know the Tigers are all set to go to the South Africa on July 18 to play a practice match,” informed Yunus.
Tigers will play a Test and five one-day internationals in their monthlong tour in Zimbabwe.
In response of a question of terms and condition of the agreement, Yunus said that it was a win-win situation.
“There was a win-win situation. There has been no window for IPL or any other T20 tournaments and without board permission he will not be able to do any other job during his two-year tenure.
“The financial package is more or less the same as Jamie Siddons,” said Yunus adding that they will confirm the appointment of the support staff soon after the arrival of the new head coach.
Yunus said that the leadership quality of Law impressed them the most. “Law was far ahead on our shortlist for the new coach. We were on the lookout for someone with passion, drive and international pedigree to lead the Bangladesh team to greater heights and in him we believe we have found a coach who is highly motivated and also committed towards achieving goals. The most important thing which impressed us most is his leadership quality during his playing career.
“He has had a distinguished playing career and his coaching experience with a world class side like Sri Lanka would be very beneficial for the Bangladesh Team. The negotiations took some time but we are delighted to finally have him on board” continued Yunus.
Law said he was relishing the challenge of working with the youthful and talented Tigers squad: “I’m really excited by this opportunity the BCB has presented me with. It’s a great honour. To leave Sri Lanka Cricket is not a decision that was taken lightly. My time with them has been a most enjoyable journey and I’d really like to thank everyone involved there for their support. I have made so many friends there and had some fantastic experiences.
“A new challenge awaits me now in Dhaka, which I believe I’m ready for. To coach a national side, I think is any coach’s goal, so to get the opportunity to work with what I think is a very talented bunch of cricketers, is particularly exciting. I look forward to the times ahead and taking Bangladesh to the next level,” said Law.
Like his predecessor, Law, the fifth foreign coach of the Bangladesh Test team, also promised to improve the ranking of the Tigers from the current ninth position.

National opener Tamim Iqbal asked the young cricketers of the GP-BCB Academy to take time in mastering a single shot instead of trying to learn too many shots at a time.
Tamim had an hour-long session with the budding 24 players at the Academy on Wednesday, sharing his experience at the international level and giving tips on how to be a successful cricketer.
Mominul Haque, the diminutive left-hander of the academy team, felt the session with the number one batsman of Bangladesh will help them grow up as a player as he had focussed on different areas of the game.
‘It was a fantastic session as we have learnt a lot of things,’ Mominul told reporters at Mirpur on Wednesday.
‘Tamim Bhai told us to give time in mastering a shot before moving on to the next one,’ said Mominul.
‘He took four months to make himself skilled on the leg-side after he found out that it was his weakness,’ said Mominul.
Mominul said Tamim asked the players to come out of the shell while interacting with the coach as it is the players who have to ask for a solution rather than thinking that the coach will know the problem without being told.
GP-BCB Academy is currently having Australian Ross Turner as their head coach.
‘We must be able to interact freely with the coach if we want to learn something from him,’ said Mominul.
‘He said he was very inquisitive about different aspects of his game and always used to knock Jamie Siddons so that he could improve on his shortcomings,’ said the former BKSP student.
Apart from that, Tamim also mentioned that every batsman should know that he cannot be as fluent as he is capable of in each game but still it is his duty to stay at the wicket.
He cited the example of the World Cup match against India where he scored 70 runs at a pace that is not similar to his style. He battled through as he was advised by coach Jamie Siddons. His innings could have been crucial if run rate would decide Bangladesh’s fate.

The technical evaluation committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board has urged the officials to expedite the appointment of the national coach so that he can join the team before they travel to Zimbabwe next month.
The BCB officials said they are closed to signing an agreement with their preferred candidate Stuart Law, but the process is being delayed as the Australian is still waiting for clearance from his present employers Sri Lanka.
‘We have asked the BCB officials to complete the process soon as we want the coach to accompany the team in Zimbabwe,’ said committee member Gazi Ashraf Hossain after a meeting on Wednesday.
The meeting also discussed the national team’s preparation for the tour and decided to organise at least one four-day and a few one-day warm-up matches for them against the Bangladesh ‘A’ team.
‘We have asked the grounds committee to let us know about the availability of the grounds so that we can fix the dates for the warm-up matches,’ he said.
Most of the Bangladeshi players do not have any longer version match under their belt since they last played a Test match against England in Manchester in June, 2010.
Ashraf said they are also in talks with the South African board so that the team can play a four-day match against any of their sides before landing in Harare.
Until the new coach is appointed Sarwar Imran will act as an interim coach, said Ashraf.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to send the national team to South Africa to play a four-day practice match as part of their preparation for the Zimbabwe tour in July-August.
BCB’s technical committee in its meeting yesterday recommended the stopover in South Africa for a four-day practice match as they believed that it would help the Tigers get reacquainted with the longer form.
During the month-long tour, Shakib Al Hasan’s men will play one Test and five one-day internationals against Zimbabwe, who will end their self-imposed Test exile with the match against the Tigers.
“The Bangladesh team is likely to go to South Africa on July 19 to play a four-day match against South Africa’s High Performance unit players. The committee recommended the match as we believe it will be helpful for our players who will return to Test cricket after a long gap,” said BCB’s director and chairman of the technical committee Enayet Hossain Siraj after the meeting.
Siraj also informed that they are planning to arrange one four-day and three limited-over practice matches at home.
“The practice matches will be held between the national team and the Bangladesh A team. We will announce the 15-member final squad for the Zimbabwe tour by the first week of the next month,” said Siraj.
The national players are now doing their fitness training under the guidance of trainer Grant Luden, and they will go to Cox’s Bazar on June 26 where the conditioning camp will finish on June 30.
When asked who they have in mind to conduct the skill training after the conditioning camp, Siraj said that they have decided to give Imran Sarwar the responsibility until the head coach is appointed.
“Imran will do the job and we will also involve the other local coaches. We are hopeful that we will appoint the head coach and other supporting staffs in time,” hoped Siraj.
BCB is now waiting for confirmation from Australian Stuart Law, who is all set to become the Tigers new head coach if everything goes smoothly.

National opener Imrul Kayes urged the Bangladesh Cricket Board to arrange at least one four-day warm-up match for them before they being the Zimbabwe tour in July.
Bangladesh will leave home in the last week of July to play a Test and five one-day internationals against Zimbabwe beginning on August 4.
This will be the first Test for Bangladesh in more than a year as they last played Test against England at Manchester in June 2011.
The national players since then have hardly participated in any form of the longer version cricket as they were engaged in preparing themselves for the World Cup.
They were scheduled to face New Zealand for two Tests matches in October 2011 but the cricket board scrapped the schedule to facilitate their World Cup preparation.
After the World Cup, they faced Australia at home but the series featured only three one-day internationals.
The cricket board made them available for the National Cricket League final between Rajshahi and Dhaka but only a very few players were in a position to take the opportunity.
‘We need to play a four-day match before the tour as we will play a Test match after a long gap,’ Kayes told reporters on Tuesday after an optional batting session at Mirpur in Dhaka.
‘We have been out of the longer version cricket for a long time and there is always a chance of a problem. We may struggle with our shot selection or may lack enough concentration,’ he said.
The board is now holding a fitness training camp for the players as they do not have a coach for the national team. The players will start skills training only in July.
It was reported that Bangladesh would play a four-day match against South Africa A team before they land in Zimbabwe but the chief executive officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board said the match was yet not confirmed.
‘We are yet not confirm our practice match in South Africa,’ Manzur Ahmed, the chief executive officer of the cricket board told reporters on Tuesday.

Shakib Al Hasan finished with seven wickets in Worcestershire’s crushing nine-wicket win over Hampshire in the County Championship yesterday.
It was his first first-class game since June 18 last year. He helped the county to earn promotion to Division One last season and this time he’s played a hand in their move away from the relegation zone with their second win of the season.
He will be rested for today’s one-day game against Sri Lanka with Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal joining the county.
Shakib took the visitors’ final wicket with the second ball of the final day, taking a return catch to dismiss Imran Tahir and set Worcestershire up for an early finish. He ended with 3-85 from 24.2 overs to follow his four wickets and a breezy half-century in the first innings.
Worcestershire only lost opener Matthew Pardoe in their chase of 106 runs, skipper Daryl Mitchell hammering an unbeaten half-century as they reached the target before lunch.
On the third day, Shakib came late into the game with his left-arm spin. He took the seventh and ninth wicket — Dominic Cork and former Worcestershire player Kabir Ali — leaving Hampshire at 269-9 at stumps.
Worcestershire new-ball bowler Alan Richardson took five wickets while Jack Shantry took the other two.

Shakib Al Hasan cracked a half-century after nine innings yesterday.
The national captain hammered a quickfire 54 in Worcestershire’s first innings against Hampshire in the County Champion-ship match at the New Road ground.
The last time the left-hander went past the 50-mark was against Australia back on April 9 in home conditions. His IPL stint yielded only 27 runs from three innings while during the Friends Life t20s, Shakib’s highest score was 16, though both in the IPL and in England, his bowling form never wavered.
Playing in his first longer-version game in over a year, Shakib hammered nine boundaries in his 63-ball knock. He fell to Dominic Cork after adding 109 for the fifth wicket with centurion Vikram Solanki, who struck 173.
Worcestershire declared their first innings on 403 for eight to which Hampshire replied and were 112 for three from 32 overs.

England is increasingly becoming the new hub for Bangladeshi cricketers as at least six Bangladeshi players are currently involved in their domestic cricket.
The latest in the list is national team opener and vice-captain Tamim Iqbal, who has been picked up by Nottinghamshire for their ongoing Friends Life Twenty20 tournament.
Tamim will join his skipper Sakib al Hasan, who is starring for Worcestershire for the last two seasons.
Sakib had played a vital role in Worcestershire’s promotion to the first division in his debut season last year and they rewarded him with a new contract with an increased salary, which is nearly double the pay-packet he used to get.
Sakib was hoping that his performance would open a door for the Bangladeshi players in England, though that was not the case.
Tamim Iqbal, now the second Bangladeshi to win a contact from county side, had to wait until Australian David Hussey decided to leave Notts Outlaws to fulfil his international commitment.
The Bangladeshi players, however, are playing in regional competitions of England quite often.
At least four players, who are currently out of the national side but can make a comeback anytime, are involved in such competitions, popularly known as Minor County.
Left-arm spinner Enamul Haque     is currently playing for Guisborough CC in North Yorkshire & South Durham Premier League while middle-order batsman Rajin Saleh, who had his finest moment in the career in England, leading the national side in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2005, is representing Darlington CC in the same North Yorkshire & South Durham Premier League.
Discarded middle-order batsman Mehrab Hossain Jr is playing for Blythe CC in the Staffs & Cheshire Div 1 while pace bowler Syed Rasel, who got a perfect condition to use his main weapon – swing bowling – in England, is playing for Halstead Cricket Club in Essex League.
Former captain Faruque Ahmed sees a great benefit in playing in England counting on his experience in a club competition in Surrey in 1997.
‘It’s a huge benefit for players. Every day you will see a new condition and you have to adapt to that. You can’t get this experience anywhere else,’ he said.
Faruque added that Aminul Islam was the first Bangladeshi player to have played in England when he featured in the Yorkshire League for a few years in the mid-1990s.
Aminul was followed by Faruque himself and a few other players including Jahangir Alam, Javed Omar and Mohammad Ashraful.
Faruque, however, was reluctant to compare the experience of Sakib and Tamim with theirs.
‘They have been picked by the county sides, which are top grade. We played only club cricket. You cannot compare both, though any playing experience in England must bring some kind of benefit,’ said Faruque.

Tamim Iqbal’s dream of playing in English county cricket is about to be a reality as the dashing opener is all set to be signed up by Nottinghamshire.
Bangladesh vice-captain Tamim yesterday informed that Notts Outlaws confirmed his services for the next six matches in the Friends Life t20 tournament. Tamim will be the second Bangladeshi player to play in the English county circuit after captain Shakib Al Hasan, who is now playing his second season with Worcestershire.
Nottinghamshire, who are now leading the North Group with nine points in six matches, roped in the Chittagonian as a replacement for Australian all-rounder David Hussey, for whom Nottinghamshire were fined for playing him as an unregistered player.
Hussey is returning to Australia to prepare for his country’s one-day series against Sri Lanka and will play his final game for the county against Lancashire Lightning on June 26.
Local agent Armada Aces has negotiated the deal with Nottinghamshire, who are playing in Division One of the competition. Coach Mick Newell, who was one of applicants for the head coach of the Tigers, first congratulated the Tigers vice-captain on Wednesday night.
“Finding quality overseas players at short notice is always a challenge but we are very pleased to have agreed a deal with a player of Tamim’s quality,” said Newell.
Tamim, who came to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) office in Mirpur to get the NOC (no objection certificate) yesterday, however was not ready to disclose the news until he put pen to paper as luck had gone against him several times in regard to playing T20 cricket.
“You know luck was not favouring me in this matter. And also I think I had chosen wrong agent previously and for that I had to wait for long to make my dream come true. Now it’s feeling really great as Nottinghamshire confirmed me for the next six matches in the T20 competition,” said an excited Tamim while talking with reporters.
“I am really happy that I am going to play county cricket. I’m little bothered about the financial package, rather I am excited as I have got an opportunity to show my mettle. It’s also an opportunity to make the country proud,” he added.
Tamim informed that he must fly for England before June 29 as he has a match on July 1. “Everything is now depending on when I get the visa. If everything goes smoothly then I will fly for England before June 29, but it’s also subject to confirmation of the registration,” said Tamim.
Tamim will return home by July 20 to join the national team to play one Test and five one-day internationals in Zimbabwe. Bangladesh team is scheduled to fly out for Zimbabwe on July 29.
Tamim has however virtually no chance to play in the quarterfinals in the first week of August if his team qualifies because he will then be busy with the national team in Zimbabwe.
“My main target will be to capitalise on every opportunity in the competition so that I can continue with the county,” said Tamim, who will get a chance to play two games against his national teammate Shakib.
