Artistes are displaying prints to pay tribute to Bangla language and Language Movement martyrs in an exhibition ongoing at Safiuddin Shilpalay in Dhanmondi.
The ten-day group art exhibition is displaying 38 artworks by 30 eminent and young artists.
The artworks were selected out of a pool of more than 60 artworks that were submitted to the exhibition, which began on February 18.
Shakil Mazumder, co-ordinator of the Safiuddin Shilpalay’s printmaking studio, said, ‘We have organised this exhibition to pay tribute to the Language Movement martyrs. We did not select any topic for artists. However, some chose to work with Bangla alphabet and language.’
Artworks by artists, namely, Safiuddin Ahmed, Jyoutsna Mahbuba, Md Muslim Mia, Anisuzzaman, AH Dhali Tomal, Farzana Rahman Bobby, Salma Zakia Bristy, Ruhum Karim Rumee, Shakil Mazumder, Susmita Barua and others have been displayed in the exhibition.
The displayed reproduction of Shilpaguru Safiuddin Ahmed’s artwork titled Remembering Ekushey-I, created in 1987 using copper engraving and charcoal, shows a few eyes and different shapes painted in dark tone.
Md Muslim Mia has displayed two artworks under the title Shantel Girl, showing the backside of two young women, and A Couple, showing an intimate moment shared between a couple. The black and white works were created using woodcuts and following eastern drawing patterns.
Jyoutsna Mahbuba’s woodcut artwork titled Motherhood is dominated by red and black colours. It shows a rooster and a hen taking care of chicks.
Faiyaz Hossen’s woodcut artwork titled Royal Dilapidation shows a corner of an old house.
AH Dhali Tomal has displayed two artworks featuring crows. Both artworks show crows painted in dark tone as well as shadows of the birds.
Ruhul Karim Rumee has displayed two woodcut artworks. Both artworks show human figures and the Bangla alphabet.
Tanjum Nahar Porna’s lithograph titled Homeless was created using mostly black colour. It shows a wooden door and a lock at the bottom of the work. A few keys are present above the door along with some dragonflies.
Kamruzzaman’s artworks titled Untold Story and Raktapakhi symbolically portrays bloodshed and war. Untold Story shows a bird on a multi-tiered stand, which is sitting on top of water droplets. A stream of blue water is falling on the bird and a large crystal ball is seen in the background. The exhibition will continue till February 28.

Bangladesh Premier League champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club promised to retain their squad that gave phenomenal success domestically and internationally as the club eye more glory during the forthcoming season. In addition to winning the domestic league title, Jamal also qualified for the AFC Cup play-offs which earned them plaudits from many corners including one from the outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahudiin handed over the congratulatory letter to Jamal president Manzur Kader at a programme held at the club premises on Sunday.
Jamal, who won back-to-back Bangladesh Premier League titles, recently, became Group-B champions in the AFC Cup play-offs qualification round by beating Macau’s champions Casa Benfica 4-1 and drawing with Kyrgyzstan’s FC Alga 1-1 in Bishkek.
Jamal president Kader praised his side for delivering brilliant result both locally and internationally.
‘I am really grateful to my players for their outstanding performances,’ said the club president.
‘We travelled abroad four times and every time except 2013 IFA Shield we were crowned champions.’
Kader promised that they will again form a strong team to continue their success in the local and international arena.
‘We have a hat-trick league title up for grab and we don’t want to miss it. I have full confidence on my players who are equally eager for the success.
‘We have a great opportunity to take the team to a higher level after the qualification of AFC Cup play-offs and we do not want to lose that chance as well.’
Kader informed that the club’s growing reputation at international level earned them an invitation from Indian Super League franchise Atletico de Kolkata for a friendly match on September 19 in Shiliguri, India.
‘We felt really honoured by the invitation and we are considering it,’ said Kader.
‘We are really interested to play the game but we have to think about some issues including the availability of our foreign players who are scheduled to fly home.
‘We also have to think about the availability of our local players, many of whom will be engaged with their national duties.
‘After considering these issues carefully we will make our final decision.’
During the programme Jamal also greeted the national Under-16 football team for winning their SAFF crown recently.
DBL Group, a financial partner of Jamal, awarded Tk 10000 each for the all members of the young Bangladesh team.

Death of a woman and injuries to a university student in separate road accidents at Moghbazar and Dhanmondi in the capital on Monday triggered violent protests.
Marzina, 40, a cleaner of a shopping mall, died on the spot after a bus ran over her at M0ghbazar while a Stamford University student sustained critical injuries after being hit by a bus at Dhanmondi.
A mob set fire to two buses and vandalised several others following the death of Marzina at about 3:15pm, suspending traffic movement at Moghbazar in the rush hours.
Witnesses said a mini bus of Prabhati Banasree Paribahan knocked her down while she was crossing the road.
‘After the accident, agitated people torched two buses and damaged some other buses,’ said assistant commissioner of police (Ramna zone) SM Shibli Noman.
Fire Service and Civil Defence people rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Traffic movement resumed after the police controlled the mob.
At Dhanmondi, students of private Stamford University went berserk on Satmasjid Road as rumour about the death of one of their fellows spread instantly.
Shawgatul Alam Shimul, 18, a first semester student of the law department, suffered injuries after a bus of Mohammadpur-Dhupkhola route knocked him down near Jigatola at about 9:30am, said Inspector Muhammad Anwar Hossain, Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge.
Local people admitted him into nearby Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.
The students in protest put blockade on the road and damaged several vehicles. Police went to the spot and used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse them.
The traffic movement through Satmasjid Road, Jigatola and Mohammadpur resumed after the police controlled the situation at about 2:00pm.
Shops and other business installations kept their shutters down, witnesses said, adding that a number of students reportedly sustained injuries during the demonstrations.
The police seized the bus, but its driver escaped, the Dhanmondi police said.
A case was also filed with the police station.

New York based Bangladeshi experimental artist Firoz Mahmud’s solo art exhibition titled Dismal Cry of Heritage is going on at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Art at Dhanmondi.
Most of the 31 artworks on display at the 10-day exhibition feature the historic Battle of Plassey, which is considered a turning point in the history of the subcontinent.
Important figures of the pivotal battle such as Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent ruler of the subcontinent, traitor Mir Jafar and the officials of the then British East India Company have been portrayed through the distinctive painting style of the artist, which he claims as ‘layapa paintings’ (done in stencil and oil paints following style of the rural artisans).
His semi-abstract novel painting ‘The Start of the End of the Reign of the Sub-continent’ gives a detailed picture of the Battle of Plassey featuring two counter armed forces—the Nawab force and the East India Company force—encountering each other from two opposite sides of the canvas.
The use of two contrasting colours—golden and dark chocolate—and symbolic motifs in the painting have successfully portrayed the result of the battle—fall of the Nawab forces.
‘Beginning of the end of an Era’ addresses the background of the fall of the Nawab forces in the battle symbolically portraying the key characters of the battle– Nawab Shiraj-Ud-Daula, the traitor Mir Jafar and Captain Robert Clive, the military officer of the East India Company.
Siraj-ud-Daulah and his consorts in sad mood set against the backdrop of the beginning of the colonial era in the sub-continent have been featured in paintings such as Lamentation and Sorrowful Cry of Heritage.
The New York based Bangladeshi artist Firoz Mahmud completed his PhD from Tokyo University of Arts, Japan. He also studied at the Royal Amsterdam University in Neitherlands under a scholarship offered by the Dutch government in 2003.
Foreign secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes inaugurated the exhibition on Sunday, which will remain open from 12:00pm to 8:00pm till November 22.

Drik Picture Agency organised a discussion programme to mark its 22nd anniversary on September 24 at the rooftop of its office building in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. A photo exhibition highlighting the organisation’s motto — to always ask hard questions — was opened after the discussion. Managing director of Drik, Dr. Shahidul Alam, and filmmaker-editor Catherine Masud spoke on the occasion.
Drik, formed in 1989, has become a familiar name in the global photography circuit, particularly in developing countries. Dr. Alam asserted that the agency works relentlessly for social equality, and that challenging carefully constructed perceptions that perpetuate inequality and oppression is its central driving force. He hoped that “in coming years the rural journalism network, the masters course in broadcast journalism at Pathshala and the ramping up of the Majority World Agency, will radically change how majority of the world, particularly the rural poor, are represented.”
Dr. Alam’s speech was followed by Golam Kasem Memorial Lecture III, delivered by Catherine Masud. In her paper on “The state of moving image in Bangladesh”, Masud proposed a number of ways through which the Bangladeshi film industry can be revolutionised.
Guest of honour Frederiek Biemans, of World Press Photo, also gave a brief speech highlighting how powerful images combined with information have the ability to question delicate social issues and encourage public debates, discussions on them. Biemans opened the exhibition.
The exhibition at Gallery I features three of Drik’s staff photographers. Mahbub Alam Khan’s photo-essay is titled “Bangladesh, for the people, by the people”. His photos question the price of economic development without considering the inevitable consequences it has on common people. Through his works he followed the protests that began in 2006 against open-pit coal mining in Dinajpur. Video clippings of an interview of Professor Anu Muhammad, by Dr. Shahidul Alam, are also being played.
Wahid Adnan’s works are moving witnesses of the crash of Dhaka Stock Exchange in 2010 and the following riots. The frustration and helplessness of hundreds of stakeholders, many of whom had gone bankrupt as the market plunged, have been demonstrated in his works.
Saikat Mojumder has brought photos of a red light district in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The photos tell the heart-rending tale of young girls who are trapped into prostitution due to unbearable poverty.
The exhibition ends on September 30.

A group photography exhibition titled Reunion of Life organised by Envisio, the media and photography club of Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Jahangirnagar University, is being held at Drik Gallery of Dhanmondi in the city.
Dr Mohammad Bakhtiar Rana, director of the Institute of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University, inaugurated the event on 22 July.
A total of 28 participants, who include current students, alumni members and faculty teachers of Jahangirnagar University, are displaying 50 photographs at the exhibition.
A variety of themes have revealed stories of human lives, most of which are reflections of emotional stresses and moods of the common society– the poverty stricken floating community apart from the hardworking labour force of males, females and children.
A number of displays have presented nature at her best with focus on birds and insects. Titled Foring, a splendidly colourful print of a dragon-fly that has been captured with the aid of macro-lens by Kuhu Mannan, a 38th batch student of the English department, is a major attraction of the show though it could not bag any award.
A number of photographs have depicted landscapes in wide-angled frames bringing out the intriguing magnificence of Mother Nature.
Titled Machhi (house fly), a submission by Farhana Afroze of English Department, has a good theme, one that shows a tiny fly seated upon the zoomed fingers of an old woman upon her partially exposed wrinkled face. The photograph seemingly contains a deeply sensitive message which could be the issue of a strong resemblance between the lives of the two characters— the fly and the poor elderly woman; both having an aimless and floating destination withstanding all odds and limitations of life.
The photograph Aguner poroshmoni has defined the raging splendour of burning fire in a unique way. Similarly, Circle of Life, Centre focussed and Fireworks have all presented elements of beauty with touch of semi-realism and subtle abstraction through colourful hues, motion and intelligent choice of composition.
The dreamlike effects of light and shade in a few presentations have brought in a sense of tranquil stillness apparently undisturbed by the ongoing flow of life.
Smiling faces and sparkling eyes of women and children have revealed hopes and aspirations of the future generations in a number of photos where the hardships and complications of life seem to be missing.
Nodimatrik by Al Mahmud of Drama and Dramatics Department, Urban Life by Gourob Kundu of Anthropology department and Nari by Kuhu Mannan of English Department have been awarded in respective order with three top prizes by Photography Bangladesh, a photographic organisation.
Among these three, the second place holder, Urban Life has presented a group of caged parrots on top of an open roof and an adjoining multi-storied building standing close-by. The encaged birds are symbolic representatives of the city dwellers who too, remain restricted within the confines of the cozy and squalid urban jungles.
“This club of ours, which is in its infancy of few months, wishes to help, train and foster all budding and experienced photographers of the university and hopes to arrange regular annual photo events not only within the departments but expectantly with other universities, as well”, said Md Hasibul Haque Sakib, a 37th batch IBA student and President of Envisio, the IBA-JU media and photography club.
The exhibition is open to visitors from 3:00pm to 8:00pm every day till 28 July.
