Bangladesh’s amateur golfer Mohammad Zakiruzzaman moved into the second position in the leaderboard of the American Express Bangladesh Open Professional Golf Championship with a sensational performance in the second round at the Kurmitola Golf Club on Thursday.
Zakir, a member of the Bangladeshi team that won the gold medal at the 2010 South Asian Games, scored seven birdies against two bogeys to finish the second round at five under par (67). He is tied with India’s Raju Ali Mollah in the second position with a total score of six under par (138).
Raju, who hails from Kolkata, hit his second straight 69 in the tournament that featured six birdies and three bogeys.
Shamim Khan of Delhi shot a six under par (66) in the second round to build a two-stroke lead over the duo. At the halfway stage, Shamim’s overall score reads eight under par 136.
Overnight leader Gaganjeet Bhullar slipped to fourth, a position which he is now sharing with tournament’s favourite Siddidkur Rahman.
Siddik, ranked seventh on the Asian Tour, made up for some his lost ground in the first round, hitting an eagle and three birdies against a bogey. He finished the second round with five under par (68) for total of 139 half way through the tournament.
The second day’s action also saw a hole-in-one by Feroz Ali Mollah of Kolkata, who ended the day tied at 32nd with four over 148. His eight-iron tee shot landed five feet short of the hole and rolled in after a couple of bounces.
