Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakhha began an eviction drive on Monday to demolish Wonderland amusement park at Gulshan in the capital.
Tearing down the main entrance to the amusement park, Rajuk started the drive, led by magistrate Rokon-ud-Doula, following a court order that declared illegal the lease of the land by the erstwhile Dhaka City Corporation on which the park was built.
‘We have begun demolishing the park, as the land belongs to the erstwhile Dhaka City Corporation and the Supreme Court has declared the establishment illegal on this land,’ said Rajuk magistrate Rokon-ud-Doula.
He told New Age, ‘Though Rajuk is supposed to remove the entire commercial set up of Wonderland to make the playground open to public, the authorities decided to give the park authorities a two-day time to remove heavy and expensive rides and equipment inside the park.’
Though the then Dhaka City Corporation mayor in 1990 was officially entrusted to take care of the playground, he leased out the said portion of the Gulshan Central Playground to develop the commercial amusement park, he said.
He said that the park authorities were supposed to renew the lease but they did not do it.
A High Court bench on May 24, 2007, in response to a public interest litigation, ordered the authorities of Wonderland to remove all its establishments in six months.
A vacation chamber judge, however, stayed the order till July 26, 2007 with the appeal petition pending with the appellate division.
Another HC bench later asked Rajuk to find an alternative site for Wonderland before eviction.
The appellate division finally cleared the HC order making way for eviction, said the Rajuk magistrate, adding that in 2009 Rajuk had notified the park authorities about eviction.
Wonderland Amusement Park managing director M Mustafizur Rahman, however, said, ‘We have several times requested the court to allot an alternative land for the park and we applied many times for the renewal but they did not respond.’
He said, ‘Rajuk got no eviction order. Petitioner’s lawyer gave his opinion that Rajuk can evict and according to his opinion Rajuk is conducting the drive.’
Mustafizur claimed that the city development agency did not notify them before the drive.
The park was built occupying around a four acres of land of the Gulshan Central Playground which had 120 games for kids and cost more than Tk 150 crore, he informed.
Rajuk executive engineer Nurul Islam told New Age that they had launched the drive following a May 3 order of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
He said, ‘We will knock down the heavily-built entry gates and boundary wall of the park with two bulldozers and more than 30 labourers will be backed up by around 100 riot police for the drive.’
An owner of a ride ‘Rocket Rider’, AKM Rahamatullah said, ‘This is just stupidity to destroy a high technical rider of an amusement park, which was built for kids with all love and emotion to give them some refreshment.’
The ride cost Tk 1 crore and it is 64 feet in height and in one jet eight children can sit, he said.
The demolition of the park thundered many city dwellers and kids like Labanya Faria, who came with her three daughters to have some refreshment.
Labanya, who lives at Banani, said, ‘We are here as my kids love this place and as their exam has ended but it is very shocking for them and to me too to see such a wonderful place demolished in such way.’
The owner of this park has seven parks for kids across the country, informed the park officials.

Monirul Islam’s solo painting exhibition at Bengal Art Lounge
“When I’m engrossed in painting, I lose myself. Without fear, I might even destroy the image or create a new pattern, as the painting takes over me; I believe each painting has a life of its own,” says Monirul Islam, renowned Bangladeshi painter. Islam’s latest painting exhibition, titled “Of Rupture and Continuity”, is now on at Bengal Art Lounge in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Without much deliberation, Monir applies colours and creates forms, lines and compositions. He puts layer upon layer of paint, until he feels that he has achieved what he’s striving for. The outcome is a contemplative, subtly balanced arrangement of colours and space that draws an art enthusiast’s eyes.
Islam is mainly recognised as a printmaker. However, currently he has focused more on painting. His application of paint is intense and the lines are more minimised; colours seem to be bold and vivacious. These works simultaneously display technical finesse and mature intellect.
At the exhibition, his paintings on display often feature surprising elements. He believes art can be enriched through changing mediums. Each medium has a special quality. As part of experimentation and developing new features, Islam has used oxide colours, smoked black, different types of soil, coffee, marble dust, brick dust, burnt ground rice, acramin and natural pigments. The painter has used special glue that bonded the materials.
The artist knows where to stop — which is a strong suit of his paintings. He avoids rigid forms and over-embellishment. As a result, a good sense of proportion is noticed in his works. He has a fascination with local materials. The materials are easily available and cheap. One remarkable feature of his works at the exhibition is that he has pasted paper (grimy, uneven and torn) on corrugated board for a number of his works. Corrugated board is another medium that enables him to portray his illusions and fantasies.
“The materials’ rough texture and rutted surface give me some advantages; I can easily apply colours and create lines. Most of the time, the paper encourages me to create something novel,” he says. The artist has worked on them in acrylic, oil, pencil and other mediums to portray varied surrealistic, geometric patterns and symbolic images. His relationship with geometric abstraction has made him one of the pioneers of abstract painting in our country. Some of his works feature scribbles and clean compositions — articulating fantasy, longing and melancholy.
The exhibition will continue till December 25.

Assault victim, mother, two brothers over protest
A group of stalkers beat up an eighth-grader, her mother and two brothers for protesting harassment of the girl at Kalachandpur of the city’s Gulshan Sunday night.
Police detained two persons including one of the alleged stalkers Jamal in this connection.
The injured are Bipasha Rani Barman, 14, student of Kalachandpur High School, her mother Subhashi Rani Barman, 47, and brothers Niranjan Chandra Barman, 26, and Subal Chandra Barman, 22.
The injured were first rushed to a local hospital and later treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
DMCH sources said the condition of Bipasha was the worst. She was very weak and could not speak properly. Subal said she could not take a class test yesterday due to the injuries.
Daughter of fish trader Nitai Chandra Barman, Bipasha lives in a rented house at Kalachandpur Sarker Bari with her family.
Subhashi told The Daily Star yesterday that six youths including detained Jamal were hanging around in front of their house around 10:00pm on Sunday when she and her daughter were returning home from a drugstore.
While they were passing by, one of the youths threw a burning cigarette at Bipasha which Subhashi protested. Sending Bipasha home, she gave the youths a piece of her mind.
At this, two of the stalkers held her by the left hand and injured it while another slapped her on the face.
As she screamed, Bipasha came into the scene to her aid. According to her, one of the youths then swooped on her. He caught her by the throat, slapped her, beat her with a stick. Then holding her by the hair he banged her head against a wall.
Bipasha’s two brothers who came in rescue of their mother and sister were also given a severe beating.
Hearing call for help, locals gathered at the place, but the youths managed to flee the scene.
On information, Gulshan police raided the area and detained Jamal. They also detained Muhit, father of another alleged stalker Kamal.
Subal said the youths had been harassing his sister for the last three months.
Meanwhile, detained Jamal claimed that he was innocent and that he was not involved in the assault. According to him, he was passing by the spot when the incident took place and he paused there for a while noticing the chaos.
During a visit at the scene last night, the members of the victim family informed The Daily Star that they have settled the matter with the youths through arbitration.
However, locals said Bipasha’s family came to a compromise thinking of their safety and business in the locality. They demanded punishment to the alleged stalkers.
Gulshan zone Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Khandker Lutful Kabir confirmed The Daily Star about the detentions and said that they were investigating the matter.
Police kept the detainees under custody till filing of the report at 12:45am.
About two years ago, two stalkers had shot dead the parents of another student of the same school as the family refused their marriage proposal for their daughter. It created panic among locals over protesting harassment of girls in the area.
