Rajshahi University introduced health insurance and life insurance facilities for its students for the first time in its history.
Under the insurance, a student of the university will get insurance facilities up to a maximum of Tk 80,000 if he/she falls ill and is admitted to a hospital for treatment, while Tk 2, 00,000 will be provided to the family in the case of death.
RU vice-chancellor professor Golam Sabbir Sattar informed the journalists of the insurance for the students at a press conference held at the university senate building on Tuesday noon.
Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar said that they had signed an agreement with Zenith Islami Life Insurance Limited to ensure healthcare for the students.
He said that students would come under the insurance facilities by depositing a premium of Tk 250 from the next month.
Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar said that they had taken the insurance scheme for a period of two years to reduce the health risks of the students.
‘A large number of our students come from poor and low-income families, and some of them face severe financial crises if they fall sick while studying. We do not want any of our students to suffer without treatment for lack of money’, he said.
Anwar Hossain Sarker, deputy vice-president of Zenith Insurance Limited, said that under the scheme a student would also get insurance benefit up to a maximum of Tk 20,000 if he or she fell sick and took treatment as per a doctor’s prescription without being admitted to the hospital.
‘However, in this case, a doctor’s prescription, hospital bill papers or vouchers will have to be submitted’, he added.
Anwar Hossain Sarker also said that the insurance facilities would cover medical related services such as post-surgical services, intensive care facility, blood transfusion, physiotherapy, radiotherapy, procedural charge, oxygen respiration, ventilator charge, dialysis, dressing, and nebulisation.
He also said that under the insurance students would be able to get medical services at more than a hundred hospitals without any hindrance.
However, students suffering from any congenital diseases and long-running illness would not get this insurance facility, he added.
Among others, pro-vice-chancellors professor Choudhury M Zakaria and professor Sultan-Ul-Islam, and registrar professor Abdus Salam were present at the press conference.
