Siddons seeks to move on
Our Correspondent, Chittagong
Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons admitted that his confidence was ‘dented’ by the humiliating loss to West Indies last Friday, but was keen on forgetting the setback and moving on.
“The boys are still shell-shocked. They are sad about what happened and the performance we put up. My confidence is a bit dented as well,” Siddons, who was speaking at a press conference at Chittagong’s Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, replied when asked how they were taking the nine-wicket loss. “Today is another day. We are back on the park now. It should all be forgotten. We’ll move on. I don’t expect anybody else to forget it, but we need to forget it and move forward.”
The Tigers are in Chittagong for their must-win encounters against England on the 11th and the Netherlands on the 14th.
In the face of stiff criticism and public outcry, Siddons defended his players saying that it was a matter of things going wrong on the day. “The public needs to realise it, and I think they do, that the players were the most devastated, most embarrassed, most upset by the result. They don’t go out there to play cricket like that. We are very keen to bounce back.
“It just fell apart on that one day. I don’t want to over-analyse that. That will not get us anywhere. But we need to learn from it, and the players are aware of that. They need to change a few things and stick to the team plans, which they didn’t do well in that match, and not even against Ireland. They went away from what has been successful for us.”
The coach said that the criticism from newspapers and past players affected each individual differently, and expressed his discontent at the comment of some former players. “We try not to read the paper or listen to what people say. A lot of players are disappointed by the past players. And I am also disappointed with some of the past players that are saying stuff about me as well.”
Asked how the mood in the camp was ahead of their crucial tie against England, Siddons said, “Definitely more determined. And [the West Indies game] also makes us realise where we are at. We need to improve some things, and we can be — because of our youth and age — up and down. Don’t expect us to be that down, though. We have been playing better cricket for the last 12 months, and that was out of the blue. No one expected that, that’s why we are so devastated.”
The focus must now shift to the England game and Siddons seemed optimistic. “We have played them [England] recently here.
We played pretty well against them in Dhaka and here. They are struggling, but they are still a very good cricket team. They are not struggling as much as we did the other day,” Siddons said, and mentioned how crucial local player Tamim Iqbal would be in their next assignment.
“He is one of our key players, we need him to start well. He is determined and
confident of doing that. He played well last time here, and he likes playing against England.”

Former captain Mashrafee bin Murtaza exchanged some heated words with coach Jamie Siddons on Tuesday following a recent comment of the Australian about his fitness.
They fell apart after the coach told reporters on Sunday that he had no interest in Mashrafee, who is not in the World Cup squad and was yet to regain his fitness.
He made the comments a day after Mashrafee had returned to competitive cricket with the Dhaka Premier League match between arch-rivals Abahani and Mohammedan.
Siddons mocked Mashrafee by saying his return to the game bore no significance to him, despite the bowler completing his full quota of 10 overs to claim 1-55 and grab two catches.
Mashrafee was disheartened by the comments and said in a newspaper interview that he had never asked Siddons to take an interest in him. Masharfee also pointed out that Siddons is just an employee here and he on the other hand is the one who plays for the country.
Siddons demanded an explanation on Tuesday on the side line of national team’s practice session which further deteriorated their relationship.
He took Mashrafee at the indoor complex, locked the door and had a heated exchange with the former skipper.  Coming out from the indoor, Mashrafee said that Siddons had no right to talk about his fitness.
‘He is not supposed to certify whether I am fit or not. There is a physiotherapist to do that,’ a dejected Mashrafee told reporters.
‘I was told by the physicians that they will see if I can bowl with the full run up or not by February 7 and will make an assessment on my fitness,’ he said.
After the heated conversation Siddons claimed that the attempt of Mashrafee to be in the side is unrealistic and the paceman is unwilling to understand the reality.
‘He has been upset since he was left out. I was trying to explain the situation, make sure where he stood. He was wondering why he is training but I told him that even though he is out of the 15 and injured, we still need him,’ said Siddons.
‘Why would he be upset by that statement? I’ve got to focus on the 15 players in the squad. It is not my job to look after him, it is the physio’s job and the bowling coach’s job,’ said Siddons.

The return of paceman Mashrafee bin Murtaza to competitive cricket hardly impressed coach Jamie Siddons despite the injury-prone bowler performing decently in his comeback match for Abahani in the Dhaka Premier League on Saturday.
Mashrafee bowled all 10 overs of his quota to return with a wicket conceding 55 runs  and also took two key catches in what was the title decider of the league against their bitter rivals Mohammedan SC.
But Siddons gave little importance to his performance and at the same time was sceptical about the pace he generated.   He also refused to pay any attention to the bowler who is not a part of the World Cup squad.
‘Mashrafee is unfit, so I am not really worried about him at the moment,’ said Siddons after the practice session on Sunday.
‘I’ve got three fast bowlers in my squad. I’m not worried about anyone who’s outside the squad. I am worried about Nazmul, Rubel and Shafiul,’ he said.
‘Club cricket is very different from international cricket. There are far better batsmen playing [international cricket] and the wickets are far better. International cricket is a different ball game altogether,’ said Siddons.
He also ruled out the chances of Mashrafee coming straight into the Bangladesh team, even if he is totally fit, for the upcoming World Cup as there are other equations which he needs to meet to make an entry.
‘Mash is outside the squad. There are three fast bowlers in the team that we are worried about. Mash needs to keep doing his recovery, and it is going really well. I hope he’s fit by the World Cup, then he has to put his hands up to be a replacement, otherwise there’s no chance,’ said Siddons.
‘He has injuries and if he will get fit by the World Cup, it’s fantastic. At the moment he is still in recovery. I am only worried about the 15 players that are in the squad,’ said Siddons.
