Beloved legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar died on Sunday at the age of 92, her sister Usha Mangeshkar said. She was admitted to a hospital in early January this year, after she tested positive for Covid-19 and was also diagnosed with pneumonia. Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the ICU with mild symptoms and was recovering slowly, according to Times of India.
Around January 28, the singer was taken off the ventilator, after she showed slight signs of improvement. However, on February 5, her condition deteriorated and she was back on ventilator support. Since her condition was critical, the veteran singer was put under aggressive therapy and was tolerating the procedures
before her unfortunate demise.
“Lata Didi’s songs brought out a variety of emotions. She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India,” tweeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India declared a two-day national mourning following death of Lata Mangeshkar and the national flag would fly at half mast, according to reports.
Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929 to Marathi musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti in Indore. She was the oldest of the siblings, Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
At birth, Lata Mangeshkar was named Hema but rechristened later after a famous character Latika from her father’s play ‘Bhaaw Bandhan’.
Before making a mark as a singer, Lata Mangeshkar had faced the camera as an actress. Her father passed away when she was 13 and the famous songstress took charge of her family and worked in over eight films from 1942 to 1948. With little success in acting, Lata Mangeshkar went on to make a career in singing.
Lata Mangeshkar took keen interest in singing and had studied fine art of music with Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Amanat Khan, celebrated singers of her time. She had also received music lessons from her father.
Known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, Lata Mangeshkar’s debut song ‘Nachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari’ for Marathi film ‘Kiti Hasaal’ (1942) was dropped from the final cut of the film. She was initially rejected as a playback singer but later on she went on to deliver some of the biggest hits of the industry and will
be fondly remembered for her massive contribution to the music industry.
She was the music director for five films and had produced four movies out of which three were Hind films – ‘Jaanjhar’ (1953), ‘Kanchan Ganga’ (1955) and ‘Lekin…’ (1990) which bagged several National Awards.
Lata Mangeshkar’s rendition of ‘Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon, Zara Aankh Me Bhar Lo Pani’ moved India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to tears in 1962.
She was also the first Indian to have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1974.
Lata Mangeshkar’s song ‘Tere Sang Pyar Main’ from ‘Nagin’ (1976) and ‘Wada Na Tod’ from ‘Dil Tujhko Diya’ (1987) were used as a background score in Jim Carrey starrer ‘Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind’ (2004).
Lata Mangeshkar was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, third-highest civilian award in 1969, the Padma Vibhushan, second-highest civilian award in 1999 and the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 2001.
Lata Mangeshkar was also conferred with France’s highest civilian award, ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ (Officer of the Legion of Honour) in 2009.
She received three National Awards for the songs ‘Beeti Na Bitai Raina’ from ‘Parichay’ (1972), ‘Roothe Roothe Piya’ from ‘Kora Kagaz’ (1974) and ‘Yara Seeli Seeli’ from ‘Lekin…’ (1991).

I no longer fit in Indian cinema- Lata MangeshkarAfter recording songs for more than 1,000 films in 36 languages in a career span of seven decades, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar says she now feels out of place in the Indian movie industry, reports Times of India.
‘Cinema has changed a lot from the times when we used to work. I will not say that it’s not good, but I don’t fit into it. If I would sing in any film today, then I don’t think I will be able to sing it beautifully,’ said the 83-year-old singer here Monday at an event organised to announce the recipients of Dinanath Mangeshkar Awards.
However, she believes that ‘change is inevitable in this world,’ and said that she is not ‘blaming anyone for this’.
From classical to romantic numbers to ghazals to bhajans, Lata has made her mark in a variety of genres.
Lata started her singing career in 1943 at the age of 13 with the song ‘Mata ek sapoot ki duniya badal de tu’  for Marathi film ‘Gajaabhaau’, and she even did bit roles in films for her family’s living.
The singer admits she hated acting in films, but had no choice at that time.
‘I have worked in some seven to eight films and I didn’t enjoy it. I used to be very sad when I worked in those films. But at that time I was helpless. I had no choice,’ she said.
Her last song in a Bollywood film was ‘Tere hasne se’ for 2011 film ‘Satrangee Parachute’.
She also launched her music label LM Music with a bhajan album last year.

Lata blesses Asha in public showAsha Bhosle was felicitated with the Pt Hridaynath Mangeshkar Lifetime Achievement Award by her
elder sister Lata Mangeshkar in a concert on Sunday.
The show was packed as Asha performed in Mumbai after 15 years, reports Times of India.
Lata blessed Asha by touching her forehead. Reciprocating the gesture by touching Lata’s feet, Asha said, ‘To receive an award from Lata Mangeshkar is a huge honour for anyone. I’ve always craved for appreciation from her.’
Lata revealed, ‘Asha left the house when she was 14. She has worked so hard to achieve this. She did it on her own. She still does riyaz, by listening to our father’s records. I don’t.’  Lata, who doesn’t sit through any shows, did so on Asha’s request and was seen clicking pictures of Asha’s performance.
Asha regaled the audience with a classical jugalbandi with brother, Pt Hridaynath, random gags, catwalk, mimicry and her spontaneous dance moves! “Hearing ‘I’m a fan’ from a living legend is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was on top of the world,” said Runa Laila.
The diva recently met ‘Bharat Ratna’ Lata Mangeshkar at the latter’s residence in Mumbai. “I performed at several Puja celebrations in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. On October 2, I performed at the celebration hosted by Rani Mukerji’s family and on October 4, at singer Abhijeet’s programme. Alamgir and I met Lataji on October 3. Though the meeting was supposed to last 30-40 minutes, we ended up chatting for a couple of hours,” said Laila.
“I met Lataji for the first time in 1974 — at my concert in Bombay (now Mumbai). That was my first show in India. Lataji was the chief guest at the concert, organised by ICCR. In 1975, I did playback for a film, ‘Ek Se Badhkar Ek’ (music direction by Kalyanji Anandji); Lataji attended the mahurat (launch) of that,” recalled Laila.
Since mid-’70s, the two singers haven’t had a chance to meet one-on-one, according to Runa Laila.
“Her (Mangeshkar’s) nephews and nieces were telling me that they love my music and that’s when Lataji said ‘I too am a fan’. I received gifts — a sari, two of her recent CDs. That has to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life,” said Laila.
Asked what the turnouts were like at her recent concerts in India, the diva said, “I was surprised to see a lot of teenagers in the audience. I’d say the turnouts were impressive.”
In recent years quite a few of her popular songs have been remixed in India. What’s her take on that? “I think these songs should be ‘remade’ and not ‘remixed’. The artiste, who originally recorded a particular song, should sing the remade version too. Several renowned artistes have recorded ‘Dama Dam Mast Qalandar’, but each has done it in his/her signature style. If someone is inspired by my cover of the song and decides to remake it, I should be the one re-recording it,” Runa Laila said.
PTV (Pakistan TV) wanted to honour the artiste with a Lifetime Achievement Award on the occasion of its 47th anniversary. But due to the unstable situation in Pakistan, Runa Laila has sent regrets.
The artiste is busy with playbacks for Bangladeshi films. Among the young music directors, she mentioned Emon Saha, Shawkat Ali Emon, Bappa Mazumdar and Adit to be gifted.
