Dancing diva turns singer Madhuri Dixit has shown off hersinging chops in Gulab Gang.
Her dancing skills are legendary. However, not many people know Madhuri Dixit is a talented singer as well. In a first, the actress has lent her voice to an entire song from Soumik Sen’s Gulab Gang starring Juhi Chawla and her in the lead. Giving her company is her mother, who, we hear, has done an equally good job.
Producer of Gulab Gang Anubhav Sinha confirmed the news and said: ‘It is a little known fact that Madhuri sings beautifully. In fact, her mother always wanted her to be a classical singer. We are extremely happy she has sung first for our film. You will get to hear her soon.’
Explaining how it panned out, Sinha said: ‘There was a scene where Madhuri breaks into a song. We discussed the idea of changing that particular moment into a full fledged song. We asked Madhuri and she was game for it. The song in question will appear in the first half of the film.’
About her mother being part of the track, Sinha said it was a last minute decision. ‘Soumik made some quick modifications in the song when Madhuri sprung a surprise at the recording studio by walking in with her mother. The entire unit knows her mother is a good singer and Soumik too felt he should request her to sing,’ he said. The recording was completed recently at Empire Studios in Andheri.
‘Madhuri and her mother completed the song in all respects in two hours. Both have done a fabulous job, and we are very impressed,’ said Sinha.
With this, Madhuri joins the elite club of Bollywood celebrities who have also tried a hand at singing – Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, among others.
Madhuri Dixit (born 15 May 1967) is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Hindi films. Often cited as one of the best actresses in Bollywood, Dixit made her film debut in Abodh (1984) and received wider public recognition with Tezaab (1988). She went on to establish herself as one of Hindi cinema’s leading actresses, acknowledged for several of her performances, her beauty, and her accomplished dancing.

Give Madhuri Dixit Nene a dance floor, and we all know what she is capable of. An entire generation of filmgoers grew up seeing Madhuri dance in movies like Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Devdas (2002) and Aaja Nach Le (2007). But now, the versatile actor is all set to do something new — Season Five of the celebrity dance show Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa (to air on Colors from next week) will see her sing for the first time, reports Hindustan Times.The actor recently recorded a new version of Kabhi Kabhi, the title track from the 1975 Amitabh Bachchan movie. The 47-year-old recorded the song early on Wednesday.
And she wasn’t alone. Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is a judge along with Madhuri on the show, has also recorded a shayari in AB Sr’s style, which will be part of the song.
Ever the perfectionist, Madhuri put in 10 straight hours for the song that is expected to be used as part of the opening episode of the show. The idea behind getting Madhuri and Karan to record a song was to highlight the show’s underlying theme: stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
The lyrics, aside from the first line, are believed to be completely new, although the tune has been maintained from the original track picturised on Rakhi and Amitabh.
The new lyrics have been written to let Madhuri express her gratitude towards her audience for bringing her back to Mumbai and to showbiz.
An evidently excited Madhuri tells us, ‘I felt the show’s opening episode is the perfect platform for me to step out of my comfort zone and thank my fans for their immense support. Singing is something that has always intrigued me. I’ve had a lot of fun working on the song.’ She adds, ‘It’s a great thrill and one of the biggest moments for me right now.’
Karan, who turned 40 last month amid much fanfare, has only words for praise for his co-judge: ‘Madhuri is the queen of dancing in Bollywood, and a fantastic actor. In the recording studio, behind the mic, I discovered that there is another side to her. She’s an incredible singer. I think the song has turned out really well. I can’t wait to know what the audience has to say.’

Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit has decided to return to India along with her doctor-husband and two sons. Much to the disappointment of her eager fans, she had given up her acting career and spent the last 15 years in the United States following her marriage.“For all my fans, we are relocating to India! It will be good to be back home,” 44-year-old Madhuri wrote on the microblogging site Twitter.
Madhuri, who was the undisputed numero uno heroine in Bollywood for two decades, married Shriram Madhav Nene, a cardiovascular surgeon in 1999, and shifted to Denver soon after.
After her marriage, as she got busy with family, Madhuri had appeared in just one film: “Aaja Nachle” (2007).
This year, she came to India for three months to judge the fifth season of dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa”. Following the show she was flooded with offers for films.
Madhuri made her acting debut in “Abodh” opposite Tapas Pal in 1984 and was widely acclaimed for her acting prowess in films like “Saajan”, “Beta”, “Khalnayak” and “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”. However, she left Bollywood at the high noon of her career.
A muse for the late Indian painter M.F. Husain who made a film in 2000 named “Gaja Gamini” featuring her, the former queen bee of Bollywood told the Times of India in a telephone interview: “I think this [return to India] was going to happen one day anyway. We are all very excited, the kids especially.”
Madhuri is currently scouting around for schools in India for her two sons Arin and Ryan. Her husband too is looking for an option with a leading hospital in Mumbai.
“Everything is changing in India. It’s a land of opportunities. There’s so much to do out there. So, we thought this is the right time,” said Madhuri.
Asked what prompted her return to India, the actor of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Devdas” said there were many reasons including the fact that she and her husband would like their sons to grow up in India.
“It would be a great experience for them. This is where their roots are,” she pointed out.

Madhuri Dixit has been appointed brand ambassador for a fundraising project for the conservation of Asian elephants and tigers.The actress launched the “Emeralds for Elephants” project on behalf of Gemfields, a Zambia-based emerald mining company.
Speaking at the fundraising event, Dixit said: “This national heritage animal in India is now seriously under threat since its habitat – forests – is disappearing at an alarming rate.
“Many instances of human-elephant conflict have been reported in the country. This would not have happened if elephants had their own space and humans had not cut forests for farmlands, settlements, industries, roads or railways,” she said.
Gemfields has collaborated with the World Land Trust and Wildlife Trust of India to raise funds for the protection of Asian elephants and tigers.

The industries reaction to Madhuri’s demand is not too positive. A trade analyst of cinema says to TOI, “Who will give Madhuri five crores now? Though she does have the fan base, she isn’t a top actress anymore.” He adds that Madhuri will get roles in the films which are specially written for her, just like the way it is written for Superstar Amitabh Bachchan. “Madhuri needs a reality check. In case someone has a particular script in which only she fits, perhaps she will get the high price.” concludes the analyst.
The answers to all the questions will be answered after the release of her film. Till then we leave the Filmmakers thinking, ‘Is Madhuri worth Rs 5 crores risk?’
