On the road for quite some time now, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza must have been a tired man. He returned to his Dhaka home yesterday only after leading the Tigers to yet another series win, in fact the fourth on the trot on home soil. During the process he led his side to 15 wins against five losses. So he deserved a long nap to put aside the tiredness. Then he thought the doze at his apartment would not be as relaxing, so he changed his mind and was planning a trip to his home town of Narail, the only place that can give him back the full freshness. Against the backdrop of these many little issues, Mashrafe thought yesterday would not be a perfect day to talk cricket with Bishwajit Roy when The Daily Star reporter contacted him upon his arrival in the capital from Chittagong on completion of the ODI series against South Africa. But at the reporter’s insistence, the pace bowler finally welcomed him and allotted fifteen minutes for him. And that is when Mashrafe started baring his soul. He spoke of things from captaining the Tigers, the fans’ madness towards the game and unbelievable successes of the team to future stars like Soumya Sarkar and Mustafizur Rahman and the real heroes of the country, the freedom fighters, and his 200-wicket feat during his more than an hour conversation. Mashrafe is not someone who will tell you things to please you; rather he always talks from his heart. And that’s the reason we felt to publish the below excerpts from the long tête-à-tête in his own words:
Since the Zimbabwe series I was so engrossed with cricket that I couldn’t even realize when any festivity was coming. After the match yesterday [Wednesday] I went out for sehri and fortunately one shop was open so I did some shopping for my two kids.
Oh! Such a hectic life. After third match, I am finally feeling that Eid is coming and I’m going to my sweet hometown [Narail]. Everyone has some kind of way to blow off steam. Some people like to go outside and visit places, but for me it’s by going home. It refreshes me completely and I feel reenergised.
If someone really understands the game then they will say that what happened to us over the past few months is outstanding. And from my perspective this is a huge achievement for Bangladesh cricket, especially the year 2015. For us, in terms of one-day cricket, the last eight months were like a dream, but we are the ones who realised that dream.
I feel Bangladesh cricket has reached such a stage that it’s time for us to move further forward. Although I still doubt how the normal people are taking this. If they keep on expecting wins then it will become very difficult for us because we still have a long way to go. We will now be playing T20Is one after another, which is always challenging for us, but before that there is an even bigger challenge; playing 4 Test matches against South Africa and Australia.
I said before the World Cup that if we could perform well then it would help us in our series after that, but I didn’t expect it to help us so much.
Honestly, a lot of people have criticised us saying that Tamim [Iqbal] keeps getting out, Soumya [Sarkar] is not making the most of his starts, but we toned everyone out. Out of 16 crore people if 5 crore are watching cricket, then 1 crore people will have the same opinion and the rest of the 4 crore will have different opinions. So if you try to listen to everyone you can never move forward. I feel that we understood what we had to do to play good cricket and we executed that. Tamim is still playing shots, Soumya is playing with freedom, the bowlers know where and when to attack. We did everything based on a system.
I never planned ahead for anything in my life — not for my exams, not when I had to buy clothes for an occasion — I always do things at the last moment. So when I got the captaincy, I kept doing what I always did. I never thought about success, failure, future or past. None of that bothered me.
I never expected that I will captain Bangladesh. There’s a reason behind saying that because when I started playing I always felt that there can be nothing better than playing for my country. I thought there’s no need to go further than that.
People are talking about my attacking captaincy. The thing is very simple to me. Recently I saw that things have become much easier for the batsmen. They have gotten into a habit of hitting shots. They never defend and both the wicket and format suit them. From what I have seen, the batsmen will play shots, but as long as I can stop them from taking singles it will create pressure. If you don’t allow them to rotate the strike then the batsmen are forced into taking risks. I always try to stay one step ahead of the batsmen.
I do what my instinct tells me to do. On Thursday I was told to bring in Mustafizur [Rahman] but I waited, because my gut-feeling was telling me to bring on [Mahmudullah] Riyad. I did that and he got a wicket with his first ball. So it’s mostly all instant decisions.
We’ve climbed from ninth to eighth to seventh [in the ICC ODI rankings] and we can keep moving forward. At least we should try and hold onto this spot for a while and then go up when the time is right. Cricket is all about ups and downs, but the main thing is to hold on to your position and be patient.
I would like to urge everyone not to get too excited. We should respect all teams we play. On the flipside don’t treat our defeats too harshly. Patience is very important in every aspect of life. I think the team that is developing now can put in more professional performances after 2 or 3 years.
Regarding my 200 wickets, if I did play 100 matches more then I might have been a more celebrated bowler. Perhaps everyone would have been more proud of me that I have taken 300 or 350 wickets. I believe I had that ability and longevity, but despite playing for Bangladesh for 14 years, I’ve lost 3-4 years to injury.
Let me shatter some illusions today. We are entertainers. We are not heroes. The heroes are our freedom fighters. We don’t sacrifice anything for the cause of the nation. The freedom fighters did. Don’t misunderstand me, cricket is not everything. What we try to do is to bring happiness to our nation.
We still have to prove many things. We have games in England, New Zealand and Australia. If we can win some matches there then I will say that we can beat any team anywhere. However, the beauty of this team is that none of the players are ever fully satisfied.
I can tell you right now Tamim will finish on 10,000 runs, Shakib 10,000 runs and 400 wickets, Mushfiq 10,000 runs, Mustafiz 400 one-day wickets and Soumya 10,000 runs. Bangladesh is the team that will produce the most world-class players in the next ten years, if the money-spinning T20 leagues don’t creep in.
I don’t know how long I can keep playing with this team. But I can assure you the moment I will understand my drive and willpower have decreased, I will call time.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza doesn’t want to miss any more cricket after becoming one of fifteen national cricketers to be included in the BCB players’ contract for 2012.
The contract, which will run from January 1 to December 31, was approved on Sunday in the board meeting with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Abdur Razzak and Mashrafe being put up in Grade A+, the top among the five contract catagories.
Vice-captain Mahmudullah Riyad and Imrul Kayes have been placed in Grade A while Grade B will have Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam and Nazmul Hossain while Nasir Hossain and Jahurul Islam are in Grade C. The rookie grade has gone to Nazimuddin, Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury and Elias Sunny.
It was a particularly auspicious event for Mashrafe who made a successful comeback to competitive cricket after a knee injury that took out another eleven months out of his career. Ever since his international debut in 2001, Mashrafe has missed 32 Tests (played 36), 94 ODIs (played 124) and five T20s (played 13) for the national team.
“I haven’t set any goals in particular for this year ahead but I want to continue playing. I have missed more than hundred games for Bangladesh, I think. So I want to make sure I play more cricket because if I had played those games that I’ve missed, I could have taken more than 300 wickets till now,” said the man who has taken 245 international wickets thus far.
“Of course it makes me happy, but the return was more important to me. It was necessary for me to make the comeback because that’s why I had the surgery back in May,” Mashrafe said yesterday.
“But it isn’t just the comeback, I always said that I have to perform and stay in the team. There are things which usually stay out of my control but I would like to manage whatever I can, as far as my fitness and performance is concerned. My focus is on cricket and it is important to be among the contracted players,” he added.
Unlike most of his colleagues, Mashrafe has continued to train at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium every morning after the Asia Cup in a bid to keep injuries away. “I have the tendency to get injured more than anyone else, as you may know. So I want to keep training and stay fit, not lose focus at all,” he said.

Having returned from injury and surgery after eleven months, he has taken four wickets and bowled seven tight spells in the Asia Cup, but what Mashrafe Bin Mortaza brings to the Bangladesh dressing-room as a cricketer is more than just wickets or the confidence of a brave cricketer.
“If Mashrafe bhai is in the team, whether he is playing or not, he is the kind of person who can lift a team’s morale just by his presence,” says skipper Mushfiqur Rahim. “He always helps us and guides us.”
After bowling his heart out in the crucial third and final league game on Tuesday, Mashrafe should have been pleased with his effort; bowling with economy and ending up with at least a wicket on a flat track. But the Narail Express was asked to share his thoughts with the team and from one corner of the huddle, his words spelled assurance.
“It is always Riyad bhai, Shakib or I who talk, so yesterday we asked him [Mashrafe] to say something, which he wanted to say on his own after the innings.
“We would normally go back to the dressing-room and have the talk but he wanted to say it on the field to underline the importance of the match.
“He said that this kind of opportunity does not come often, so we should grab it. And he said that 230 is not a difficult chase but nor is it easy, so we should play our natural game,” narrated Mushfiqur.
Imrul Kayes, restricted to the sidelines despite his return to form, also finds Mashrafe as an important figure in the Bangladesh dressing-room. “He fosters a friendly atmosphere. He makes sure everyone is talking and involved. He is everyone’s friend, no matter who it is in the team,” he said.
“The national team also missed his services as a fast bowler, one must remember. He is a very incisive bowler and gives the team a good start,” added Imrul.
Man’s cricket, as Imrul has said, shouldn’t be forgotten but the dressing-room these days is about much more that a player can bring to the field. For Mashrafe, his pragmatism and ability to connect with everyone is involuntary, he can’t help it.

If you want to know how painful it is for a cricketer to be a mere spectator for almost an entire year, you can ask pace spearhead Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. It has never been a smooth journey for the ‘Narail Express’ because of persistent injuries since his international debut in November 2001 against Zimbabwe. The agony was exacerbated this year as his dream of playing in the World Cup at home was shattered following yet another knee injury suffered during a domestic game in December last year. He made a short comeback to international cricket to play two ODIs against Australia at home in April before undergoing surgery on his knee in May.
The “Braveheart” cricketer however was not willing to look back, instead eagerly looking forward to the Premier Division Cricket League, which will kick off today at three different venues, to make a comeback into competitive cricket after a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
“I am looking forward to make a new start in my career. Hopefully I will be available for selection for my club (Bangladesh Biman) from the third week of next month. I’m now bowling with a full run-up at practice, but not with full effort. But I am confident about regaining my match fitness from the third week of the next month, but everything will be depend on our national team physio,” said Mashrafe while talking to the Daily Star Sport yesterday.
“I don’t want to look back at what I missed in the past; rather, my main target is to see how I can manage myself and prolong my international career. I hope I will be available for selection for the next Asia Cup in March, but you know I have to prove myself before that,” he added.
Mashrafe was so frustrated with the latest injury that he was even thinking of saying goodbye to the longer version of cricket, but he has got back his confidence through the way he has been recovering from the injury.
“You all know this was the seventh operation on my knee, so you can understand what had been going through my mind when I again underwent surgery in May this year, but now I’m confident about reviving my Test career. Definitely, my goal is to prepare myself so that I can play Test cricket again. But before all that I want to perform well in the Premier League no matter how many matches I play,” said Mashrafe.
BCB’s physician Dr. Debashish Chowdhury also expressed his optimism over Mashrafe’s recovery.
“Mashrafe is now fine and hopefully he can play the Premier League from mid January next year. He is almost okay and giving seventy percent effort in his bowling. What we must ensure is that we manage him properly when we handle him in competitive cricket,” opined Debashish.

Pace spearhead Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will return home tonight from Australia with renewed hope to make a return to international cricket this year.
“I’m now fine. Dr. David Young checked me this morning and he was really happy with the improvement and what he told me is that he will be surprised if I miss the Pakistan series in December this year,” said an excited Mashrafe while talking to The Daily Star Sport over phone from Melbourne yesterday.
The “Narail Express” underwent another operation on his right knee in Melbourne on May 11 under the guidance of Australian orthopedic surgeon Dr David Young. He had injured his right knee in December last year during a Premier Division Cricket League match at BKSP.
“It is too early to say anything about when I will get back my full fitness as only two weeks have gone after the operation but right at this moment I am feeling good. There is no swelling on the operated knee and I can walk with the support of a crutch,” informed Mashrafe adding that he is very much confident about prolonging his international career.
Mashrafe said that the doctor has advised him to slowly start cycling and swimming now and after two months the rehabilitation program will start.
“Generally it needs four weeks from the operation to start the rehabilitation. If everything goes well then it will be possible to start bowling from October, so I’m hopeful that I can gain full fitness before the Pakistan series,” said a confident Mashrafe.
BCB’s physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury however informed that they will be able to provide a detailed program after the assessment of the papers.
“The operation has been successfully done and he (Mashrafe) is now fine. We will assess all the papers and only after that we can say when we will start the rehabilitation program,” said Debashish last night.

Pace spearhead Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will fly to Australia next Saturday for another surgery on his right knee.
The “Narail Express” made his return to international cricket in the home series against Australia last month after injuring his right knee in December last year but never looked hundred percent fit during the three-match series.
“I felt that it’s better to do the operation to prolong my career. Young (Dr. David Young) will first assess the depth of the injury and after that he will give his decision,” said Mashrafe, who was reportedly under pressure to play the series against Australia, yesterday.
“I have no other choice but to go for another surgery if I want to prolong my cricket career. Another operation means I will be sidelined for at least another six to seven months or more,” added frustrated Mashrafe.
“I’m not sure about my future. Let’s see what happen,” he said.
Dr Young last performed surgery on Mashrafe in August 2009 after the fast bowler hurt his right knee during the first Test against the West Indies at St. Vincent a month earlier.
It will be the third operation on the right knee of Mashrafe who has battled numerous injuries throughout his career.
The latest injury happened while taking a run for Abahani, his club, against BKSP, in a Dhaka Premier Division League match in December last year, shattering his World Cup dreams.
Mashrafe took time to opt for another surgery as he was confident about his fitness but his last appearance against Australia made it clear that he has no other choice.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physician Dr. Debashish Chowdhury informed that it will take time for Mashrafe to regain full fitness this time. According to his timeline, the country’s leading paceman has hardly any chance to make his international return this year.
“Normally it takes four to six months to fully recover from this kind of injury after operation but for Mashrafe the case is altogether a different one because the knee was operated on earlier. I think it will take time, at least seven to eight months,” informed Debashish.

The drama over Mashrafe Bin Mortaza playing the three-match one-day series against Australia still hangs in the balance with the first game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur only 48 hours away.
Everybody was curious to know whether Mashrafe would make an international return after missing the World Cup due to injury as the ‘Narail Express’ skipped training with the Tigers at Mirpur.
When he finally talked with the reporters after training, Mashrafe kept everybody guessing.
“I’m yet to take the final decision because I want to talk with everybody before taking this decision. I can assure you that tomorrow a decision taken for the best will be taken,” said Mashrafe with an inquisitive smile.
What is confirmed is that Mashrafe is not fully fit and is also mentally going through turbulent times because of his ailing wife, making a decision on his return to international cricket against a team like Australia difficult.
Mashrafe didn’t explain the reason behind the dilly-dallying but a reliable source informed that he was under pressure from the board high-ups to play this series. It might sound funny but the reality is that he was drafted in the side despite the observation of the team think-tank that he was still unfit.
Besides, from the very beginning Mashrafe has been saying that he was not good enough to play in the series, prompting a burning question: Did the authorities concerned take his opinion before including him in the squad?
“I think it would not be wise to talk about the issue now. What I can say is that I am honest in my position. It would be good not to make public what happened before the selection,” Mashrafe said when asked whether the authority has taken his opinion before drafting him into the squad.
Mashrafe however said that it would have been better for him if he had gotten at least one more week to improve his current fitness status.
“I’m giving hundred per cent in my bowling and it’s not as if I was far away from my standard. But it could have been much better if I got at least one more week for preparation. Physio (Michael Henrry) also told me that I need a few more days for gaining full fitness.
“Because of family problem I was out of touch for almost forty days which made it difficult for me to regain full fitness. As a player I want to play this series but I have to think about my team also,” he continued.
Mashrafe however believes that his decision, be it yes or no, would not distract the team focus ahead of a tough challenge.
“I don’t think it will hamper the team spirit because everybody is focused on the series and they are very much aware about my situation. And above everything I have to fight for a place if even I am hundred percent fit because Rubel (Hossain) and Shafiul (Islam) are in the best form,” said Mashrafe, adding the he would go for another surgery on his right knee sooner than later.
