The resistance of Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das wasn’t enough to save Bangladesh from the humiliation of an innings defeat as they lost the second Test by an innings and eight runs against Pakistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Shakib top-scored for Bangladesh with 63 while Mushfiq and Liton made 48 and 45 respectively but their efforts couldn’t make up for the top-order collapse as Bangladesh got bundled out in their second innings for 205.
Sajid Khan took four wickets in the second innings to finish with career-best match figures of 12-128, which also won him the player of the match award.
With the win, Pakistan completed a 2-0 clean sweep over the hosts as they had earlier won the first Test in Chattogram by eight wickets.
This was also the first series of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 for Bangladesh, which they ended without scoring any points.
Bangladesh had also been clean-swept in the preceding three-match Twenty20 series against the visitors.
The day began with Bangladesh on 76-7, needing another 25 runs to avoid follow on, with Shakib and Taijul unbeaten on 23 and 0 respectively.
But Sajid, who had taken six wickets the previous day, struck twice and Shaheen Shah Afridi took one wicket to end Bangladesh’s first innings on 87.
Pakistan did not hesitate to enforce the follow on and Shaheen and Hasan Ali proved the decision to be correct in no time.
Shaheen and Hasan struck twice each in their opening spell as the Bangladesh top-order for the fourth time in the series collapsed like a house of cards and the team was left reeling on 25-4 in just the ninth over.
Mushfiq and Liton then came to Bangladesh’s rescue with a solid 73-run stand.
Just when the duo was looking comfortable, Liton struck a half-volley off Sajid straight into the hands of Fawad Alam who juggled the ball a bit before completing the catch.
After Liton’s dismissal, Shakib and Mushfiq began consolidating the innings and were on the verge of going into the Tea break unbroken.
But disaster struck in the final over of the session when Shakib attempted to take a quick single and Mushfiq, running towards the striker’s end, put in a desperate dive to survive but his bat was found to be in the air when Mohammad Rizwan whipped the bails of the wickets and Bangladesh went into Tea on 147-6.
Shakib and Mehidy Hasan got together after the break and batted together for 23.1 overs and added 45 runs and it seemed like Bangladesh would somehow eke out a draw.
After the frontline bowlers failed to break the stand, skipper Babar Azam put himself in the attack and ended up claiming his first wicket in international cricket by trapping Mehidy leg before wicket for 14.
Sajid then claimed his 10th wicket in the match in the very next over by going through the defenses of Shakib and also removed Khaled Ahmed for a duck shortly.
Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain fought hard and batted another 5.4 overs but in the end Sajid trapped Taijul in front for five and won the match for Pakistan
Earlier, Pakistan declared their first innings for 300-4 on the fourth day after rain and poor lights only allowed 63.2 overs of action in the first three days.

Bangladesh Cricket Board will replicate the bio-bubble arrangements they provided for Australia in the recently concluded series in the forthcoming home series against New Zealand
The home of cricket in Mirpur once again returned to its usual business. The cricketers started the optional individual training session ahead of the upcoming home series against New Zealand set to begin next month.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das who missed out on the historic five-match T20I series against Australia at home are gearing up for the return and spent time at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium alongside Soumya Sarkar and Shamim Hossain yesterday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has successfully hosted three international series since the pandemic started last year and the board is all set to host the fourth international series with the Kiwis scheduled to arrive in the country on August 24.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand Cricket [NZC] has requested the BCB to provide Covid-19 safety protocol similar to what was in place for the Australian cricket team’s visit earlier this month.
BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed the board is making an effort to create a similar environment for the New Zealand cricket team.
“They have been requesting us to provide the same bio-bubble protocol that was in place for Australia. We will also try to create a similar environment. Like I have said before, the bio-bubble was not to keep only Australia or now New Zealand team safe but our team too. Considering all the facts and practicality we will try to create a complete bio-bubble environment and complete this series too successfully,” Nizamuddin told media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
There will, however, be a change in protocol at the airport in Dhaka this time around where Australia had reached Bangladesh on a chartered flight but New Zealand will be travelling on a commercial carrier.
“New Zealand will be travelling to Dhaka on a commercial flight. So the protocol at the airport will not be the same as it was for Australia. Australia had travelled to Dhaka on a chartered flight. But we will make effort to minimise public contact with the New Zealand team at the airport and transfer them quickly to the hotel. We are planning on it,” he added.
As part of the safety protocols, the tourists have discouraged playing the scheduled warm-up game ahead of the series which was set to take place in BKSP on August 29. All the matches of the five-match series will be played at the SBNS behind closed doors starting from September 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10 respectively.
“When we travel to another country, we look for facilities and practice match to get the team with the foreign condition. Based on this we had offered New Zealand for a practice match [at BKSP]. But this will require an additional bio-bubble at the venue. So they are discouraging this and are pressing for limited movement in Dhaka and successfully complete the series,” said Nizamuddin.
According to the BCB CEO considering the viewership and the local time of New Zealand in mind the board is planning to start the matches at 4 pm local time.

Pakistan win Test series 2-0
An unlikely resistance came from Mushfiqur Rahim and Nasir Hossain on the fifth and final day but their efforts were not good enough for Bangladesh to save the second Test against Pakistan and sign off the year on a bright note yesterday.
Pakistan made a clean sweep by winning all matches on tour when they posted a seven-wicket victory over the Tigers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, where the home team showed some character through man-of-the-match Shakib Al Hasan’s splendid all-round performance after a no-show in the first Test in Chittagong. Bangladesh looked competitive for the first time in the series during the second Test after surrendering meekly in the lone T20, three ODIs and first Test match. The most encouraging part in the second Test was that there had been three sessions in which the Tigers did not lose any wickets, which showed that this Bangladesh line-up were capable of batting with resolve, but the missed catches and poor umpiring undermined what could have been a better performance.
The Tigers’ well-documented tendency to collapse was on everybody’s minds when they resumed their second innings on 114 for five under foggy condition but the 117-run sixth wicket stand between Mushfiqur and Nasir kept Pakistan waiting for victory till the last session. On the other hand, things could have been different if the Bangladesh captain held his nerve at a crucial moment.
Bangladesh pushed close through brilliant batting from Mushfiqur and Nasir, who guided Bangladesh through the first session without any damage with the scoreboard reading 200 for five, but they fell short of holding on for a draw when an arm ball from left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman bamboozled Nasir, who saw his stumps dismantled.
But still hopes of a draw were alive until Mushfiqur made a mistake. The right-hander unnecessarily went down the pitch to charge Rehman but miscued his chip shot to see the ball landing in the safe hands of Saeed Ajmal at mid-off. That opened the gate for Pakistan to finish off Bangladesh’s longish tail.
Nasir top-scored with 79 off 172 balls with eleven boundaries while Mushfiqur his seven fours in his 53 off 143 balls. Their efforts helped Bangladesh score 234 runs in their second innings, leaving Pakistan to achieve chase 103 runs in 40 overs.
Pakistan scored quickly in their chase, wary of the bad light factor and reached the target for the loss of Mohammad Hafeez (47), Taufeeq Umar (3) and Azhar Ali (34) in 20.5 overs.
If playing one session without the loss of a wicket was the high point then the poor shot selection, which has been the main headache of the team for a while, from Mushfiqur was the low point of the final day’s play.
The first session belonged entirely to the home team, raising hopes of an honourable draw. They were just another good session away from safety, but Mushfiqur’s wicket at the worst possible time spoiled the party for the hosts, leaving a strong Pakistan to end their successful year in the best possible way.
But still, the Tigers can at least take some positives out of this match when they next play a Test, which will once again be after a long break.

The tendency to take risks in a stable position has hurt the Tigers once more though skipper Mushfiqur Rahim owned up to his error in judgment after the seven-wicket defeat to Pakistan in the second Test.
“Of course I will take the blame. If I didn’t get out, we could have batted 30 minutes more. I feel guilty for my shot as I let my team down,” said the Bangladesh captain during the post-match press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.
Pakistan had just removed Nasir Hossain after seeing the pair add 117 for the sixth wicket in a morning of inspired rearguard action from the Tigers. With three hours to go and an elongated tail to bat with, Mushfiqur thought it wise to charge left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman. But the man who had batted so calmly for his 53 off 143 balls, let out a chipped straight drive that was skied and eventually caught by Saeed Ajmal at mid-off.
It was the last straw as Pakistan took just 38 balls to close off the Bangladesh second innings, restricting the hosts to a total of 234 and a 102-run lead.
“I was set so I thought if I take a chance, I could score 20-30 more runs. My plan was correct but execution was wrong. They only had square-leg back. I tried it earlier but couldn’t get to the ball,” he added, though he was not the only guilty party in the second innings.
Mahmudullah Riyad was reckless too, skying an ill-conceived pull shot off Aizaz Cheema late in the fourth evening. “He knows it well that when he got out, it was a bad time. He was having good partnerships with Nazimuddin and Nasir. We have to cut down on some shots in such situations,” said Mushfiqur.
He credited the individual performers though regretted the dropped catches that made the bowling weaker. “I thought there were a couple of good individual performances. I think it’s a great feat by Shakib Al Hasan, he bowled really well. He also batted well.”
“It was good from Nazimuddin as a Test player, as well as Nasir Hossain and Shahriar Nafees. Our bowlers created a lot of chances. But we let ourselves down in one department, and that’s fielding,” he said.
Nasir, who made 79 on the fifth and final day, said that a drawn game would have made him happier than the century.
“I would have been happier had we played out a draw rather than the century. I wanted to bat till tea, not get the ton.
“But I feel good to score 79 against a team like Pakistan. It wasn’t easy, but I was confident. I like batting at five as I can have the other batsmen around me,” said Nasir.

Pakistan were waiting for the new ball  that they never needed to break the resistance of Nasir Hossain and Mushfiqur Rahim, said skipper Misbah-ul Haq after a seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the second Test on Wednesday.
Nasir and Mushfiq denied Pakistan any wicket on the fifth morning and threatened to kill their hopes for a win before left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman finally ended their resistance.
Pakistan needed just over an hour after the lunch break to dismiss Bangladesh finally to give their batsmen at least some time to complete the win.
The second new ball in the Bangladesh innings was still 16 overs away when Bangladesh resumed play after the lunch break with 200-5 on board.
Misbah did not go for the new ball when it was due as by that time Bangladesh were already wagging their tail with only two wickets in hand. Saeed Ajmal took the last two wickets with the old ball in his hand as the home side were all out for 234 runs.
‘I think the plan was simple at the moment,’ Misbah told reporters after the game. ‘Nothing was happening as the ball was not turning, so we planned to finish off the bowling quickly so that we can take the new ball in quick time and just stop the flow of runs,’ he said.  ‘That was the plan, if we get wickets in between that was okay. I think when we built pressure by two three maiden overs the batsmen were under pressure. We just got wickets and we even did not need the new ball as the spinners finished it off,’ said Misbah.
Misbah, however, still saw a great room for improvement for his side after they failed to take their chance in the first innings. Pakistan reduced Bangladesh to 43-4 in the first innings but Sakib al Hasan and Shahriar Nafees seized the initiative from his side to add 180 runs in a record stand that provided the cornerstone in Bangladesh’s 338.
‘In this particular match especially when we got four quick wickets we should have booked them by 200 runs,’ he said. ‘Sakib and Shahriar deserve credit but after 30-4 [43-4] we should have bowled much better. We need to have discipline in bowling. Even today we were giving runs at a healthy rate,’ he said.
The skipper has no complaint about batting despite them being criticised for a slow approach in the first innings.
‘In my view the result on its own will defend itself [for our batting],’ said Misbah. ‘There is no use in becoming aggressive when you are losing match instead of winning it. The best strategy for the team is that which helps the team to win the match. When the team is winning I think we are playing well,’ he said.

Sakib al Hasan became the first Bangladeshi to hit a century and take five wickets in an innings in the same Test but his efforts look like being in a losing cause after Pakistan seized control of the second Test.
All-rounder Sakib followed his first-innings 144 with the bat by snapping up six for 82 with the ball as the hosts bowled out Pakistan for 470 on the fourth day on Tuesday.
The remaining squad, however, did little to hounor Sakib for his unique feat as they limped to 114 for five in their second innings, trailing the visitors still by 18 runs overall.
Knowing their vulnerability against quality bowling and   the   recent  history  of
repeated collapse, one can be very little optimistic about them saving the Test match, which still has 98 overs of play left.
They were last in a similar situation against West Indies in this very ground in November when they had five wickets in hand before going to the fifth day with a task to save the match.
They were all out in little over than one session and one can expect a similar result unless Nasir Hossain (30 not out) and Mushfiqur Rahim (7 not out), the last recognised batting pair and both unbeaten overnight, do a miracle.
Bangladesh can only blame them for going into such a position as the bowlers created enough chances to restrict Pakistan to a reasonable total and bat at time when there was enough light in the field.
The diminishing light not only forced the batsmen to make a mistake but also had clear impact on the eyesight of umpire Billy Doctrove whose two blunders cost them dearly in the second innings.
Tamim Iqbal finally looks to have got back his touch when he started batting in the second innings but Doctorve ruined his effort on 21 raising a finger to a caught behind appeal off Umar Gul.
Replay showed that the short-pitch ball had brushed off his shoulder and Tamim was under no illusion to have accepted the decision happily. While leaving the ground, he indicated the incoming batsman Shahriar Nafees that he ball had hit him in the helmet.
Little Shahriar knew that he would be a victim of Doctrove off the next ball which hit him high in the pad and  the lbw appeal could have been easily overlooked.
The two gifts from the West Indian off the last two balls before the tea break took Gul close to a hat-trick and left Bangladesh to 24–2, a position from where they could never recover.
Nazimuddin survived the hat-trick ball after the break but Abdur Rehman had bowled him soon for 12 before Aizaz Cheema dismissed Mahmudullah (32) and Sakib (six).
It was not how they had expected to finish the day that began so promisingly for them with a wicket for Elias Sunny just on the second over as he got rid of the overnight Pakistani batsman Younis Khan for 19.
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq had made his 14th  Test half-century before Sakib began his journey towards glory making him a catch off of Mahmudullah at slip for 70.
Asad Shafiq was next to go, leg before for 42 after being deceived by a swinging ball from Robiul Islam.
Sakib then had Abdur Rehman (24), Gul (11) and Saeed Ajmal to complete his five-wicket haul that made him only the second cricketer in nine years after India’s Ravichandran Ashwin to take a five-for and a century in the same Test.
The wicket of the last man Adnan Akmal, who had just completed his maiden Test 50, took his tally to six giving him even a greater success as only six players in this history could achieve a six-for and a century before him.

It was almost inevitable in some stages of Sakib al Hasan’s career. He created at least four opportunities in the past, came close on two occasions and missed it agonisingly.
But anyone with the slightest idea of his capability as an all-rounder knew Sakib would get a five-for in an innings and a century in the same Test match sooner or later in his career.
And they came finally on Tuesday with Sakib adding 6–82 to his 144 runs in the first innings which predictably made him the first Bangladeshi to achieve the feat.
A total of 20 cricketers have taken five or more wickets with a century in the long history of Test cricket before Sakib but if six wickets are taken into account, the number comes down to only six.
Sir Ian Botham, who did it three times, and Imran Khan, who did it the last time in 1983, are in the elite club. Nearly 31 years after Imran’s 117 and 6–98 against India at Faisalabad, Sakib has done this against his home country to underline his credential as a complete all-rounder.
Sakib could have achieved this in the same match that established him as bowler against New Zealand in October 2008 but he was out on 71 after taking 7–36, which still remains the best bowling figure for Bangladesh.
His second chance was against Sri Lanka in Dhaka when he had taken 5–70 and was dismissed on 96, leading an improbable chase of 521 runs in the fourth innings.
Incidentally, Sakib’s bowling and batting figures were again 5–70 and 96 when he had his third chance against West Indies at Grenada. The only difference was that this time he finished not out as Bangladesh successfully chased the target.
In the last Test match played in Dhaka against West Indies in October, the platform was again ready for him. He took 5–63 to keep West Indies somewhat in check and was later tasked with the job of saving the Test match.
He was about to do it before a moment of madness saw him playing an improvised shot that ended his innings on 55 and Bangladesh folded almost immediately to suffer a defeat.
He was wicketless in the first Test in Chittagong, his first in three years since his rebirth as a bowler in the same ground against the Kiwis, which led to whispering around the corridor of the Bangladesh Cricket Board if he had lost his bite as a bowler.
But he took no time to announce that he has still enough firepower both with bat and ball that not only gave him the rare feat but also kept Bangladesh in the match until the fourth day afternoon.
Bangladesh blew their chance of drawing the game with their erratic batting in the second innings and even a man of his calibere could not stem the rot this time.
But one can hardly blame Sakib for his dismissal on six as he was on the field in all 12 sessions played in this Test match in one or other capacity.
After nearly three sessions with the bat on the second and the third day, he went on to bowl 22.5 overs at a stretch on the fourth day in the either side of lunch
break, taking a great toll on him.
Coach Stuart Law there rubbished the suggestion of sending him early in the second innings, saying one must not expect him alone to do everything.
‘When he’s a quality cricketer, he’s carrying Bangladesh at the moment on the strength of his own bat and bowling as well,’ Law said.
‘He came in at 4–43 in the first innings and got 144. I’d like to see him bat at No 5 and not bowl 40 overs in the innings,’ he said.
‘You want to get him out there as [early as] possible. You still want to give him time to calm down and rest. He’s happy where he is,’ Law added.

In cricket, the common phrase is that catches win matches but Bangladesh provided an example in the ongoing second Test of how catches can also cost a side a match too.
The joy of the home side of taking all 10 Pakistani wickets was short-lived as they lost five wickets for 114 runs in the second innings, which took them close to another defeat in this Test match.
But they would have seen a better result if they had not spilled six catches that allowed Pakistan to impose their authority with a huge first innings lead of 132 runs after 470 all out.
Bangladesh’s fielding had never been outstanding but at least it was not as worst as the performance in the recent past when former BKSP coach Mohammad Salahuddin was in charge.
They were going right even under Julian Fountain during the World Cup but ever since Englishman Jason Swift took over from him at the recommendation of coach Stuart Law, they have gone downwards.
The Tigers often gave an excuse that missed catches are part of the game but hardly anyone reminded them that taking a catch is also a part of the game.
Bangladesh’s bowling unit is one of the weakest in the Test arena without an iota of doubt but they at least created plenty of opportunities in the ongoing two Test match series. In the first Test in Chittagong, five catches went down and Pakistan made full use of it by filling nearly 600 runs.
In an interview with New Age after the game, Swift claimed that the fielding had improved during his time as the players were saving many runs in the outfield. He was oblivious of the fact that if they had saved four
or 10 runs with their ground work, they have gifted dozens more runs in the air.
The common argument is that many catches went down in Pakistan’s first innings which if taken by Bangladesh could have easily dismissed them for even below 300 runs.
But they went on to score 470 runs that gave Pakistan the edge before they start their victory charge with the ball.
Law initially sided with fielders and his assistant but he quickly realised that there could not be any excuses.
‘That is an area of concern for us. I think our bowlers did well and created enough opportunities. It is not a practice thing. We practice till hands are sore,’ he said in the news conference.
‘During the game, some players lapse and drop a catch. That’s part of a game. You’ll never take every catch that comes your way. We have to be switched in the field and ready to go every ball,’ Law said.
‘We are under pressure from Pakistan’s performance. When you’re dropping good players, you’re giving them two chances to bat,’ he added.
‘There’s no excuse. There are no 38-year-olds running out there. They are all in their mid-twenties. Young men should be fighting fit for 4–5 days,’ the coach said.

Pakistan had little doubt that bowlers could take them to an winning position if they could get a sizeable total with the bat, all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez said after fourth day’s play in the second Test on Tuesday.
Two wickets each from Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema ripped the heart out of Bangladesh’s batting order as the hosts limped to 114–5 in their second innings taking Pakistan five wickets away from win after they had posted a mammoth 470.
‘We knew that there will
be some movement with the new ball. So we were very much sure that if we can bowl in the right area, we can get some wickets,’ Hafeez said in a news conference.
‘I think the effort by Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema was brilliant. They bowled really well and used the conditions very well,’ added Hafeez, who defended Pakistan’s batting approach on the third and the fourth day.
Pakistan were slow in the progress which at times raised doubts if they would get enough time to bowl out Bangladesh for the second time. But Hafeez said that this was how they played the game and there was nothing to complain.
‘This game is not T20 cricket. It is Test cricket and here you will have to spend a quality time both as a batsman and a bowler and work according to the plan,’ Hafeez said.
‘We have never taken it that way and I think we have played a very good cricket throughout the season.’
‘The aim was very simple. We were looking forward to a very good total for Bangladeshi batsmen to chase and the new ball was also doing a bit,’ he said.
The all-rounder was understandably happy with their position despite persistent bad light and interruption because of fog.
‘I would like to thank players for being able to play under the bad light, put a brilliant effort and execute the plans well,’ he said.
‘I think we are in a solid dominating position in the game now and will try to finish the game as soon possible tomorrow and win the game,’ he said on Tuesday.

Bangladesh paid the price for poor fielding by allowing Pakistan to claw their way back in the second Test as the visitors closed in on a first innings lead reaching 292-3 on the third day on Monday.
Taufiq Umar made the most of Bangladesh’s sloppy fielding to score his seventh Test century which took Pakistan out of danger and put them in a position from where they can now even think of a win in this Test.
With as many as seven wickets in hand, the visitors were hoping the make some quick runs on the fourth day before testing Bangladesh’s mettle in the second innings, which could easily be decisive.
But the Tigers had the chance to put Pakistan under some kind of pressure had they not spilled three catches and missed a stumping chance that came their way.
They could take only two chances against four wastes in the 69 overs bowled on the third day until bad light stopped play. Mushfiqur Rahim was the first man to give Taufiq a reprieve when he missed a stumping chance.
The wicketkeeper was appealing for a catch with Taufiq on 56 and did not notice that the batsman was way ahead of the crease. If it is called carelessness, the drop by Nazimuddin cannot be explained with anything.
It went straight to him at gully off the first ball after lunch, but Nazim somehow managed to grass it giving Taufiq his second reprieve on 66. The left-hander gleefully accepted the life and completed his second Test century against Bangladesh before Shahriar Nafees offered another generosity at short leg on 118.
Nafees finally took the catch off Nazmul Hossain with the second new ball taken but  it did not come  before Taufiq toppled Habibul Bashar to become most successful batsman in Bangladesh-Pakistan Test encounter.
His 130 off 256 balls helped him take his total against Bangladesh to 555, which is just one run better than Bashar’s. The former Bangladesh captain scored 554 runs at 50.36 in six Tests against Pakistan.
Younis Khan is not too far away from Taufiq as he followed up his unbeaten double century in the first Test to reach 48 not out at close on the third day.  But he too was benefited by butter-fingered fielding as Shahadat Hossain also put him down off Nasir Hossain at mid-wicket on 15.
Azhar Ali is the only Pakistan player not to receive any help from the fielders as Mushfiq caught him off Sakib al Hasan on 52 for the home side’s first breakthrough on the day.
Pakistan lead the two-match series 1-0 after an innings and 184-run victory in the first Test.
