Visiting South Africa will be looking to seal the three-match one-day international series against Bangladesh when they take on the Tigers in second match in Mirpur today. South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets with a clinical performance in the first game on Friday and a similar show will give them the series with a game in hand. ‘Obviously we are looking to wrap up the series tomorrow,’ said batsman David Miller ahead of the game. ‘That’s what we love to do. But the first thing is to winning a game and we just have to concentrate on one ball at a time and cut it down into 10-over spaces.
‘Just really bring it down to little targets in the game and finish off the game. The results will come then itself,’ said Miller.
Miller said that they are expecting a fight-back from the hosts because who had entered the series with confidence after their success in the recent one-day internationals.
Bangladesh were having a successful run before the home series against the Proteas as they reached the World Cup quarter-final for the first time and followed the success with maiden series wins against Pakistan and India.
‘Definitely they are not going to go down without a fight,’ said Miller. ‘They have done really well beating India and Pakistan. We know that they are going to be up for a good scrap tomorrow.
‘We know it is going to be a great challenge and we are going to be at our best,’ he said.
Miller said that though they have won the first game pretty convincingly things were not as easy in the middle as it may have looked. The Tigers had done well at phases which made them working hard.
‘I think we have been challenged. It’s been tough conditions,’ said Miller, adding that they are at the moment only focusing on their own performance rather looking at the Bangladesh team.
‘We just want to concentrate on what we need to do,’ he said. ‘To really get the job done on whatever area it bowling, batting or fielding and just concentrating on the interior of our team, not the Bangladeshi side,’ he said.

Of South Africa’s all qualities, the one thing that did not intimidate Bangladesh is their spin bowling. And this is where they faltered in the first Twenty20 international as the visitors recorded a crushing 52-run at Mirpur on Sunday. Bangladesh skipper Mashrafee bin Murtaza said his batsmen’s inability to handle South African spinners proved to be decisive in the game that had no favourites until Bangladesh completed their seventh over.
Replying to South Africa’s 148-4, the Tigers were going neck-to-neck with the visitors despite losing both the openers for 13 as they reached 50 with almost equal pace before JP Duminy turned the game.
‘Chasing a target like this is possible in Twenty20 cricket provided you have a partnership going,’ said Mashrafee. ‘But we could not handle their spinners the way they handled our spinners.
‘There was turn in the wicket that probably put us into difficulties,’ he said.
Mashrafee said that they felt uncomfortable in the turning track that had been prepared considering the weakness of visitors against slow balls as they are playing on true wickets lately.
Bangladesh played Pakistan and India in seam bowling friendly wickets after coming from the World Cup where they also played on even pitches.
However knowing South Africa’s strength in pace bowling, the Bangladesh Cricket Board did not risk preparing the similar pitch and went back to making traditional wicket where ball comes to bat late.
The pitch also offered sufficient turn that can make even the most ordinary spinner a match-winner. It was like digging one’s own grave as Bangladesh were entrapped by JP Duminy and Aaron Phangiso, who shared three crucial wickets to break the backbone of Tigers’ innings.
Duminy and Phangiso conceded just 32 runs in their eight overs in a crucial time that completely threw Bangladesh out of contest.
‘May be we suffered because we are playing on a turning track after a long time,’ said Mashrafee. ‘The wicket was difficult for them too. But at least one or two of them carried the innings which we could not.
When pitch played a role in some of the dismissal, the same cannot be said about two openers, who gifted their wicket with injudicious shot.
Tamim Iqbal gloved a ball that was going down the leg while Soumya Sarkar miscued a pull shot of a bouncer that could have been easily left alone.
Mashrafee defended the batsmen saying that they took the risk to allow later batsmen play without any pressure.
‘I think they wanted to score 45 to 50 runs in the first six overs,’ he said. ‘Probably there was some risk into it but if it had happened things would have been much easier for us,’ he said.
‘They did well playing in this manner and it’s difficult to change style overnight. But we need to play according to the need of the day,’ he said.

South Africa were confident of earning a win against Bangladesh in the opening Twenty20 international despite putting 148 runs as condition favoured them more than their opposition, said batsman Rilee Rossouw on Sunday. South Africa folded Bangladesh for a meagre 96 runs to record a crushing 52-runs after posting a modest 148-4 on a slow pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
In an era of swashbuckling batting, the score seemed very inadequate against any opposition but Rossouw said they had no doubts in their minds that this was a winning score.
‘First of all, we looked at the statistics and found 150 is a very good score on this ground on day games,’ Rossouw told reporters after the match at the SBNS.
‘So we thought we had a very good chance of winning today, especially the way the ball was turning and going a little bit slow toward the end of the second innings.
‘It favoured us a little bit and we bowled really well and came out on top,’ he said.
Rossouw, who contributed with an unbeaten 31 off 21 balls, said that their belief started to grow stronger when they went to the field trying to restrict their opposition and immediately noticed that the ball was turning more.
Sakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim looked to take the match away from the visitors when they put 37 runs for the third wicket before JP Duminy turned the tide in his successive overs.
‘Lucky for us we bowled second innings and it favoured us a little bit more. We had the advantage of bowling the second innings as the balls turned a little bit more than the first innings,’ said Rossouw.
Rossouw accompanied skipper Faf du Plessis in an unbroken 58-run fifth-wicket stand, which South African Twenty20 captain in the prize giving ceremony said was a match-winning partnership.
Du Plessis struck 79 off 61 balls to anchor the innings after South Africa made a shaky start. Rossouw showered his captain with praise saying it had helped them stay in the game after South Africa lost the wicket of AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock sooner than they had expected.
‘Faf [du Plessis] played really well especially after we lost two early wickets he still took the game towards him and played his natural attacking game,’ said Rossouw.
‘He [Faf du Plessis] knuckled down and got the job today. We wanted a guy to stay there at the end of the innings. So, we started targeting the 17th over of the innings.
‘It’s never going to be easy playing Bangladesh in Bangladesh as they know the conditions and they got the home crowd backing them up.
‘We got to rock up and do the business,’ he said.

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim refused to take the blame alone for opting to field after winning the toss in the second Test match against Pakistan that ended in 328-run defeat at Mirpur on Saturday. The decision backfired as Pakistani batsmen made the host bowlers toil for nearly two days on a track that had nothing much to offer apart from the opening first hour.Pakistan declared on 557-8 in their first innings before dismissing Tigers for 203 runs to gain the upper hand and then declared on 195-6 in the second innings to earn an overall lead of 549 runs to nail all the hopes of the hosts.
Tigers managed to score 63-1 runs at the end of the third day but could hardly come up with any heroics on the fourth day to be bowled out for 221 runs that gave the visitors their only win in the series.
‘It’s not just a single decision of an individual,’ Mushfiq explained his decision on toss after the defeat.
‘Everyone has a say, it’s not mine or coach or anybody’s team. Everyone has an input, and everyone has a say in the team.
‘Whether we will bat or bowl after winning the toss, we had talked to everyone earlier and then decided,’ he said.
Tiger’s decision to bowl first came up under a lot of criticism more so with eight batsmen in the playing XI and with only two pacers as Mohammad Shahid and Shahadat Hossain.
Of them Shahadat bowled only two balls in the entire match before being ruled out by sustaining a knee injury.
However, Mushfiq denied accepting that he got not only his decision after toss incorrect but also fielded a wrong team with just two pacers on the pitch that he deemed would assist the pace bowlers.
‘We didn’t have just two pacers,’ he said. ‘With Soumya [Sarkar] we had three and our plan was with everyone in the team,’ said Mushfiq, referring to a player who was primarily picked up as a batsman and has taken only 19 wickets in his 34 first-class matches.
‘If it’s wrong then maybe that’s because of the outcome, if that was not the case then people would not have talked as much,’ said Mushfiq. ‘This is nothing new, such things always happen and it’s very normal.’
Mushfiq said that the approach by his team-mates was disappointing as that proves they were unable to take up the responsibility included him.
The Tigers had a relatively better start in the second innings yet could add only 158 runs to their overnight score on the fourth day.
Opener Tamim Iqbal, Sakib al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mushfiq looked to have gifted their wickets instead of their counterpart to earn it.
‘I have a different personal challenge in Test cricket, so I don’t know when was the last time I played so badly in Test matches,’ said Mushfiq, who had a very poor series by his lofty standard.
‘The plan was obviously to play our normal game,’ he said. ‘The ones in the middle though should have thought it was going to be difficult to sweep but went after every delivery on a day four wicket,’ said Mushfiq.
‘If we got a few partnerships at the top, things would have been easier. The game was almost over by lunch,’ he said.

Pakistan players were relieved ending the series on a winning note as that will help the team to get some confidence back, said skipper Misbah-ul-Haq on Saturday. Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 328 runs inside four days to clinch the two-match Test series that ended their miserable run in the tour as they were clean swept in the one-day internationals and lone Twenty20 international.
Pakistan’s Test win came after Bangladesh earned their maiden draw against their Asian neighbours in the opening Test match by making a heroic comeback through putting 555-6 in their second innings after coming behind from 296-run deficit.
‘The disappointment that came after losing one or two series would be wiped away and the confidence of the players would be gained,’ said Misbah.
‘Every match, every series is important for us. And the way Bangladesh had been playing recently it was really important for our team’s confidence to win the Test series.
‘It was really important for our team and our players to have their confidence back and also to regain the confidence of our supporters,’ he added.
Misbah praised his bowlers for doing their job in near perfection against the hosts in the series deciding Test match at Mirpur.
Tigers were shot down to 203 runs in reply to Pakistan’s 557-8 declared and the hosts were gunned down for 221 runs in their second innings chasing 550 runs after Pakistan earned an overall lead of 549 runs as they posted 195-6 declared in the second innings.
‘I think they did well, it was not easy conditions for the pace bowlers,’ said h

Misbah.
‘The weather was testing, wicket was a bit slow but this pitch was a little bit quicker and there was little more bounce. Overall we need to improve our disciplines, but I think in the end they did well to take 20 wickets in this Test match,’ he said.
Misbah added that he will take a lot of positives from the fact that some young players put their hands forward in the Test series.
Azhar Ali scored highest 334 runs in the series with a double hundred while Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed and Yasir Shah contributed well to help the tourists clinch the Test series.
‘I think the way Azhar Ali’s performance in the Test matches is coming forward, the way Asad Shafiq and even Sarfraz is playing with such consistency, and Yasir Shah is improving with every Test match – these are all positives to be taken,’ he said.
‘I think the most positive thing is the consistency of our performances,’ he added.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said that he was surprised to see Bangladesh playing defensive cricket in the series deciding second Test that ended at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday. Pakistan defeated Tigers by 328 runs to clinch the series that helped tourists regain some composure at the end of month-long tour where they were defeated in the one-day international and Twenty20 series earlier.
Bangladesh made a superb fightback in the opening Test match but somehow lost their way in the second Test when both their team selection and decision after winning the toss were questionable.
Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim left everyone surprised by opting to field first and that raised even more eyes as he did it without enough ammunition in his artillery.
‘I just have this feeling in the start of the Test match that they started on a back foot,’ Waqar told reporters on Saturday.
‘They don’t really come hard. They don’t really look to win the Test match. They were probably thinking to draw the test match, that’s why I guess they were left behind,’ said Waqar.
The pace bowling great added that experience made the difference between the two teams and also argued that Bangladesh lack proper resources in their bowling department.
‘They fought really hard but yes off course we were more experienced at the end of the day in this Test match. We exposed our sources better.
‘I guess their bowling sources were not as good as probably ours,’ he said. ‘They will get better with the time but I think in Test match cricket they need more time,’ he added.

Pakistani bowlers put an icing on the cake to see that their batsmen efforts did not go in vain in the series-deciding second Test match against Bangladesh, said maiden double centurion Azhar Ali on Thursday. Tigers were shot down to 107-5 in 27.5 overs in reply to Pakistan’s 557-8 declared to help visitors end the day on an upper hand, as the hosts trail them by 450 runs and need 251 runs just to avid follow on.
‘The best thing is that we as a batting unit performed well and applied ourselves,’ Azhar told reporters at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
‘The icing on the cake was that we got five wickets which was very important in the Test match.
‘I think we are sitting in a very good position and now we need another 15 wickets,’ he said.
Pakistan were put into a commanding position on the back of Azhar’s 226 runs and he was ably supported by Asad Shafiq, who plundered 107 runs.
Together they added 207 runs for the fifth wicket.
However, Azhar said batting was not as easy in the middle as it may have seemed.
‘Today it started spinning right from the start, there was an awkward bounce as well so we had to take some time which was important at that point or else we would have been behind from our target,’ said Azhar.
‘As a batsman we tried to complete our roles putting our hundred percent effort and we will try to focus on our roles and play big innings’ for Pakistan team.
‘When we came in the morning it started to turn and the bowlers were getting help from it and I think the partnership between me and Asad [Shafiq] was really important.
‘The way he scored his runs at the rate was really important and that took the pressure off me as well,’ he said while praising Asad’s batting.
Azhar said that it was more pleasing for him on personal ground as it eased of the pressure from his shoulder. It followed after his coming to form in the one-day internationals where he was called back in the team after a two-year gap to lead the ODI squad.
‘To comeback in any format the rule is to perform well and alhamdulilah that’s what I wanted to do focus on my own game and thank god I was able to perform in our one-day unit,’ said Azhar.
‘Overnight everyone was thinking about it but you can’t think at 127 that you can make 200 based on what the situation was,’ he said.
‘To achieve [double hundred] it required a little bit calmness and a little bit time on my part,’ Azhar said.
‘I did that after we started rotating the strike and in the end it did quite well,’ he said.

Before the second Test in Dhaka, Mushfiqur Rahim and Misbah-ul Haq agreed on at least two points in their pre-match briefing at Mirpur on Tuesday. Firstly, the wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla has something for the bowlers unlike the first Test in Khulna, which had yielded 1515 runs in five days. So, a result in favour of either team is the most likely prospect in this Test.Secondly, there will be no clear favourites in this match, especially after the manner in which Bangladesh denied Pakistan in Khulna with a stunning comeback in the second innings.
For a team like Bangladesh, ranked far away from top teams at ninth in Test, and up against a side who has still a good credential in longer version, these things should always be considered as complement.
Bangladesh are now getting these complements not only from Pakistan, but from all over the world where cricket has some kind of followers.
When they thrashed Pakistan in the three-match one-day international series and followed that with their maiden Twenty20 international win against the opponents, the cricketing world has taken a note but it did not make at least anyone surprised.
They have done so in the past against New Zealand and after a boisterous show in the World Cup it was not completely unexpected against a new team that has just entered a transitional phase.
However, after a similarly dominating performance in Test, inarguably the toughest of three formats, and that against a full-strength Pakistan, respect is the only word reserved for them.
It has made them a genuine contender for the Test series, something they never won against a quality side despite they are now almost 15 years in the business.
When Pakistan have just a double century from Mohammad Hafeez to cheer for in Khulna, Bangladesh’s achievement are countless starting from Mominul Haque’s 80 that took his average next to Don Bradman, Taijul Islam’s 6-163, Tamim Iqbal’s maiden double century, Imrul Kayes’ career best 150 and 555-6 as a team in the second innings which all had culminated in a fascinating, come-from-behind draw.
‘Of course we have some achievements,’ Mushfiq said in his press conference. ‘I just hope to begin this Test confidently with all those positives,’ added the skipper with a great conviction.
Mushfiq is now left with no choice but to target a win, which will be fitting end of their series, already regarded as the best ever irrespective of the outcome of the second Test.
‘There is certainly just one goal,’ said the wicketkeeper-batsman. ‘This is the final Test of the series and we will do whatever we need to do to win the match. And everyone is working hard for it.
One just cannot rule out his words as rhetoric, especially when momentum is with them after all that happened in Khulna.
Pakistan must be haunted by their poor memories of one-dayers and Twenty20 when they will walk into the ground for the Test match despite it being a different format and they are appearing as different outfit.
Bangladesh are also a far different side than the ones took field in the limited over versions. But the core players in the side remained the same and some of them are in the form of their life, which will give them an edge.
Mushfiq is certain like many others in the world that a Bangladesh win in the Test cannot be now described as an upset considering their performance over the past six months when they remained unbeaten in 13 matches at home.
‘I don’t think it will be an upset,’ Mushfiq said, replying to the question of a Pakistani reporter. ‘There are lots of talking that we have been playing well only in ODIs, not in the Test, but we have shown that we are capable to do well in the Test too…I think boys are ready to fight for five days and after that hopefully we will grab a win and win the series.’
