Renowned director Mostafa Sarwar Farooki said good bye to TV plays in an interview with New Age. He, however, claimed that he did not want to make any formal declaration that he would never make any TV plays in his life.
‘At present I’m only interested to concentrate on making movies, since it’s my only passion. And for my bread and butter I’ll make TV commercials,’ Farooki told New Age.
In fact, it is pre-planned decision by Farooki, who earned popularity making over 30 tele-films and serials in the past 12 years. Since he made his first tele-film Waiting Room in 1999, Farooki created a trend and a group of followers known as ‘Mostafa Sarwar Farooki and Bhai Berather’.
He, however, took time to stick to the decision just to conclude the ongoing projects.
‘These days I don’t make TV productions. Even in this Eid, I’m not making any,’ said Farooki.
‘Based on my storyline, my younger brother Kibria Farooki has made a tele-film titled I Hate My Mother, which will be aired in a private TV channel in the Eid special programme. In fact, it’s a sequel of my first movie Bachelor,’ said Farooki.
According to Farooki, he made TV productions as an exercise to execute his ambition of making films.  Farooki, however, hoped to support his followers and peers providing ideas and supports for making TV plays. Farooki further informed that he was awfully busy making his next movie titled Television.
He refused to give details of the upcoming movie as according to him it is too earlier to say anything. However, he confirmed that three popular actors of the small screen Chanchal Chowdhury, Tisha and Mosharraf Karim will play the lead roles in the movie.
‘I cast artistes who fit in the particular characters. He or she can be professional, non professional, from small screen or big screen. The colour of the cat doesn’t matter as long as it can catch the mouse,’ said Farooki.
The movie is jointly produced by German producer Christoph Thoke, Mostafa Sarwar Farooki and Star Cineplex. A few months back an agreement was signed between Mostafa Sarwar Farooki and Christoph Thoke.
It should be mentioned that Television received the Asian Cinema Fund award for script development at the last Pusan Film Festival in Korea. It was also selected as an official project of Pusan Promotion Plan 2010 [recently renamed as Asian Project Market] and Film Bazaar India 2010. Farooki’s latest movie Third Person Singular Number participated in these festivals.
Television will be Farooki’s fourth feature film. According to the sources the film will highlight rural characters while his previous three movies Bachelor, Made in Bangladesh and Third Person Singular Number addressed different aspects of urban life.

Filmmaker Mostafa Sarwar Farooki recently signed a deal with German producer Christoph Thoke for his upcoming feature film “Television”. Christoph — who is most notable for producing Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s (Dardenne brothers) art-house feature “Lorna’s Silence” in 2008 — will join a list of local producers including the director himself and Star Cineplex for the film.
Farooki said that he believes the deal will be a boost to ambitious local filmmakers who want to reach out to the global audience.
However, because of certain limitations the filmmaker refused to disclose the particular arrangement he and Thoke agreed upon.
It should be mentioned that “Television” received the Asian Cinema Fund award for script development at the last Pusan Film Festival. It was also selected as an official project of Pusan Promotion Plan 2010 [recently renamed as Asian Project Market] and Film Bazaar India 2010.
Christoph Thoke has primarily worked as on-air promotion producer for German broadcaster RTL 2 and German-French broadcaster Arte. His other producing credits included “Little Senegal”, an official entry from Algeria, in the Best Foreign Language Film category, at the 72nd Academy Awards; “Buffalo Boy”, official entry from Vietnam at the 78th Academy Awards and “Wedding Chest”, official entry from Kyrgyzstan at the 79th Academy Awards.
In total, movies produced by Thoke have been invited to about 500 festivals and garnered more than 100 awards around the globe.
“Television” will be Farooki’s fourth feature film. The film will highlight rural characters rather than urbanites — Farooki’s preferred theme so far. The filmmaker also informed that shooting would likely begin in a couple of months.

Filmmaker’s next project “Television” to have multiple producers
Filmmaker Mostafa Sarwar Farooki will soon be joining hands with Star Cineplex to produce his next film “Television”. Star Cineplex and Farooki’s own production house Chhobial will jointly produce it.
Two international producers [from Germany and France] are set join the project as co-producers. Farooki is going to Berlin and Paris later this month to finalise the deal with the international producers. The filmmaker sees the deal as a step ahead for Bangladeshi cinema in the international arena.
“Working with international producers will likely open a door for Bangladeshi films to the global movie market,” said the filmmaker.
Farooki also informed that both the international producers are well recognised and their productions have been screened at prestigious film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice.
“Television” will be Farooki’s fourth feature film. The film will highlight rural characters rather than urbanites — Farooki’s preferred theme so far. The filmmaker also informed that Habib Wahid and Hridoy Khan will work as music directors for the film. Shooting will likely start this July, according to the director.
It should be mentioned that “Television” received the Asian Cinema Fund award for script development at the last Pusan Film Festival. It was also selected as an official project of Pusan Promotion Plan 2010 [recently renamed as Asian Project Market] and Film Bazaar India 2010.
Farooki’s other films are “Batchelor”, “Mad_e in Bangladesh” and “Third Person Singular Number”.
