Macbeth stagedPadatik Natya Sangsad (TSC) staged the third show of Shakespearean popular tragedy Macbeth on the second day of Syed Shamsul Haque theatre festival at the National Theater Hall of
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday.
Translated by Syed Shamsul Haque and directed by the young director Sudip Chakrabarthy, this is the only foreign play presented at the festival.
Watching the contemporary presentation of the Shakespearean classic, audience praised the young director’s work. The participating actors also got highly appreciated for their performance.
Macbeth is a 16th century British drama, featuring a military general’s ambition to become a king through conspiracy, treachery and murder, only to be foiled ultimately by the insurgency of conscience.
Sudip’s innovative directorial composition and set design captivated hearts of the audience. The required ambiences for the sequences featuring war field, king’s palace and evil spirits’ abode have been created effectively with 15 rectangular wooden boxes on the empty stage.
Darkness prevailed at the stage, as the play illustrates dark desires of an ambitious human heart. The presence of evil spirits, and their plays on human mind already prone misguidance, was meticulously depicted on stage.
Shakhwat Hossain Shimul and Shamsi Ara Sayeka rendered the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth effectively. Their postures and bearings suitably matched the temperament of the play.
Sound effects have been carfully produced by Shishir Rahman to enhance the ambience of the play.
Sami Islam, a university student revealed to New Age that he is a great fan of Shakespeare’s plays and therefore he has come to watch Macbeth.
Rebecca Sultana, also a student, said that she enjoyed the conflicts between the characters and also liked the coherent translation by Syed Shamsul Haque.
