National stalwarts to star for respective division
The 17th edition of country’s premium first-class competition, National Cricket League, will start today in four venues under a new format, with eight participating teams splitting in two tiers.
Defending champions Rangpur will take on Dhaka Metropolis at Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra while Khulna will host Dhaka at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in the two first round matches of the top-tier.
In the lower echelon, Rajshahi will host Barisal at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium while Chittagong and Sylhet will face off at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium at Fatullah in the opening round.
Some senior national cricketers are expected to steal the show in opening round, playing their
first NCL match in many days.
Sakib al Hasan will play his first NCL match in three years when he will take the field for Khulna against Dhaka Metropolis.
Sakib, currently the top all-rounder in the world in all three formats, last played an NCL match in 2012, also at the same ground against Rangpur. That was his only match of that season and first in four years.
It means today’s match will be Sakib’s only second one in NCL in seven years. He will be joined by two other national team colleagues Imrul Kayes and Mustafizur Rahman in the Khulna team, the faviourtes for the upcoming editions.
Sakib will find fellow national cricketer Mahmudullah in the opposition tent as the right-hander will lead Dhaka Metropolitan side.
Among other national cricketers, Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim will play for Rajshahi side in second tier while his deputy Tamim Iqbal will lead Chittagong against Sylhet at Fatullah.
Both Mushfiq and Tamim missed the previous edition of NCL.
The national cricketers are expected to play only in the opening round before they resume their preparation for the home series against Australia.

Country’s premium first-class tournament, the National Cricket League, will begin on Friday through a revised format that will see eight participating teams splitting in two tiers.
Walton will be the title sponsor of the league that is said to have lost some of its gloss in the recent years due to lack of competitiveness. Under the revised format, defending champions Rangpur and runners-up Khulna will play in the top-tier along with Dhaka and Dhaka Metropolitan side. The second tier includes Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal and Rajshahi.
After the upcoming edition, one team will be promoted to the top tier while another team will be relegated to the second tier, something Bangladesh Cricket Board officials said will ensure competitiveness.
‘It’s true that it [NCL] was regarded as picnic cricket but with the new system in place it won’t be the case as there will be some prestige attached to it,’ BCB’s tournament committee chairman Akram Khan told reporters at the title sponsor unveiling ceremony on Tuesday in Dhaka.
BCB’s media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said he expects the tournament to be competitive as they are opting to play it in a sporting wicket prepared at different venues of the country.
BCB is planning to hold the tournament on home and away basis barring the opening round due to the upcoming Eid-ul Adha on September 25.
‘I think the wickets will be good for all as that remains one of our major concerns before the tournament,’
‘The pace bowlers will have something out of it while the batsmen can also get runs,’ he said.
BCB tournament committee’s failure to raise the match fee of the players, however, appeared to have taken out some shine from the otherwise competitive looking NCL.
While last year a player received Tk 20,000 as match fee, the cricketers of the first tier will get Tk 21,000 this time and cricketers of second tier teams will get Tk 20,000.
Akram said lack of budget compelled them to retain almost the same amount of match fees.
‘Actually we planned to hold the age-group four-day competition from our annual budget that squeezed the money of the senior NCL members,’ he said.
‘We will see whether we can increase the match fee from next year,’ he said.
The four divisions of the first tier will receive Tk five lakh as participating money while the each side of the second tier will get Tk three lakh.
The first tier champions will receive Tk 20 lakh as prize money while the runners-up will be awarded Tk five lakh. The second tier champions will earn Tk five lakh.

It was once again a ‘Tamim Iqbal show’ that dominated the beginning of the second round of the National Cricket League. The dashing left-hander raced to his third consecutive century and became the only batsman in the history of Bangladesh’s domestic cricket to score hundreds in three consecutive innings. Playing at the BKSP, Tamim’s 183 came of just 187 balls, as the Chittagong captain looked at ease against mediocre Sylhet bowling attack.
Naeem Islam scored a timely century at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium at Khulna against the home side. The Rangpur batsman who scored his second hundred of the tournament will definitely provide the national selectors with some food for thought.
The Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium at Rajshahi began its NCL campaign on a batting-spree as both the Rajshahi openers, Junaid Siddiqui and Mizanur Rahman scored centuries and helped the reigning champions take a sizeable lead against their opponents, Barisal.
On the contrary, the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, witnessed another low-scoring affair. The game between, Dhaka and Dhaka Metro witnessed 17 wickets fall on the first day.
CHITTAGONG v SYLHET
Tamim Iqbal continued on his merry way as he single-handedly lifted Chittagong to 367. The league’s first foreign player, Milinda Siriwardana from Sri Lanka, made his presence felt with a quick half century. The slow-left armer also sent back Sylhet’s opener Imtiaz Hossain later in the day. Enamul Haque Jr, once again proved his credentials as he ended the day with figures of 6 for 98. He also got the all important scalp of Tamim.
RANGPUR v KHULNA
Shakib Al Hasan, began his NCL tourney with two wickets at his home ground as he and his national colleague, Abdul Razzaq bowled the lion’s share of overs on the first day of the match. Naeem Islam, however, continued on with his new-found motivation to stay at the crease as he remained not out on 109 after the end of the first day. He stayed at the wicket for close to five hours and tackled the two best left arm spinners of Bangladesh with ease. The left-arm bowlers took five wickets yesterday.
RAJSHAHI v BARISAL
Rajshahi were boosted by a 267-run opening partnership between Junaid Siddiqui and Mizanur Rahman. With the national selectors still hunting for an opening partner for Tamim, Junaid’s century might just give him the edge in that battle
DHAKA v DHAKA METRO
Shahadat Hossain picked up a five-for as Dhaka booked Dhaka Metro for just 205 runs. Youngster Asif Ahmed was the only batsman who showed promise for Metro as his fluent 86 pivoted the team’s innings. Unfortunately for Dhaka, they couldn’t replicate their performance while batting as they lost 7 quick wickets. Elias Sunny of Dhaka Metro was the chief destroyer as he picked up three wickets in his first three overs.

NCL 2nd round begins today
The all-impor-tant second round of the National Cricket League (NCL) begins today after a short break for eid. The round will be the last chance for certain players to make an impression on the national selectors. Chief selector Akram Khan has already said that Bangladesh’s long hiatus from Test cricket has put him and his team in a spot of bother.
In the second round matches, Dhaka take on Dhaka Metro at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur while Sylhet meet Chittagong at the BKSP,
Khulna face off with Rangpur at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna and holders Rajshahi play against Barisal at the Sheikh Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi.
The national players will look to improve on their individual performances as apart from Tamim Iqbal’s dashing centuries, none of the other players managed to adjust themselves to the longer format of the game in the first round of matches. With the first Test match just a little more than a week away, this is the one area that Mushfiqur Rahim and Co. will want to concentrate on.
The second round will also receive a fillip with the inclusion of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The left handed player, who returned last week after his stint with Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders in the Champions League T20 in South Africa, is expected to play for Khulna. He’ll be playing the longer version of the game after a string of Twenty20 matches and the team management will definitely hope that their best wicket-taking bowler adjusts to the game as quickly as possible.
There’ll be a special focus on Mominul Haque and Enamul Haque Jr. who, according to Akram, have a good chance of making it to the national fold. Mominul had scored a century in the first game and Enamul continued his good run with a six-wicket haul against Rangpur. The chief selector had earlier stated that the majority of the positions in the team have already been taken, which means that a bunch of younger players who performed well in the first round of the NCL, namely Marshal Ayub and Shohag Gazi, might have to wait for a longer period to attain a place in the national side.
The divisions have also been trying to bring in foreign players for the second round of the league. According to the rules of the NCL, a team can play two foreign players in the squad. Chittagong have already signed up players from Sri Lanka and with this round being the last for the national players, the other divisions are bound to follow suit.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has penned a Memorandum of Understanding with Prime Bank Foundation, a subsidiary of Prime Bank, for the upcoming National Cricket League (National Cricket League). According to the agreement, Prime Bank Foundation has received a franchisee license to operate an NCL team for the next ten years. The Bank will have to pay a yearly amount of TK 50 lakh to maintain its franchisee rights.
The MoU confirms Prime Bank’s participation in the NCL. It, however, does not state the team that it will be operating. “We’ll come to know about the team that has been assigned to us once the BCB gets more sponsors. We, however, prefer the Khulna Division,” said Dr. Iqbal Anwar, chief executive officer of Prime Bank Foundation.
While the extent of the sponsors’ control over its respective division is yet to be clarified by the BCB, the sponsors are expected to handle the management aspects of the club. “We’ll be nurturing the players and we’ll also be paying their salary based on the grades assigned by the BCB. This isn’t like the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20. Our aim here is more time-bound and focused on the development of players, rather than immediate financial profit,” said Tanjil Chowdhury, vice-chairman o Prime Bank Limited.
In order to run the league in the new format, the BCB formed a governing council last night. The council has been formed with representatives from different divisions with the apparent aim to create a BPL-style format for the first-class competition.
As of today, Prime Bank is the only company to have signed a deal with the BCB. BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal however expects at least five other organisations to follow suit. The first match of the NCL is scheduled to take place on October 14. The delay in signing franchisee agreements has threatened the league’s timely beginning. The league fixtures are yet to be finalised.
Earlier this year, the BCB had decided to conduct the 14th NCL on a franchise basis in order to make the league more competitive. Of the eight teams participating in the league, six are expected to get sponsors. The rest will be run by their respective divisions.

The 14th edition of the National Cricket League (NCL), beginning on October 14, which will take place on a franchise-based system, is scheduled to
witness a series of sponsorship-related deals for the franchises today.
The country’s lone first-class competition, which has been starving for sponsors over the years, might see money finally injected into the competition and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday stated that a majority of the eight teams in the NCL are set to get sponsors.
“Several organisations have already given us their word. We just need to sign an official deal with some of them in the coming days,” he said.
The President named Prime Bank, Islami Bank, Walton and City Bank as the organisations who have expressed their interest in sponsoring the franchises. “I am confident that at least six out of the eight franchises will get sponsors this year,” said Kamal. Earlier, the BCB had decided to convert the NCL into a franchise-based tournament claiming that such a move would increase competition among the teams. The BCB also decided to introduce day-night games, which are to be played with pink balls, this year. The board has also brought a large number of players under the BCB salary structure this year.
The lack of preparation for the league, however, has attracted criticism. With a little more than a week left for the beginning of the league, several important components remain uncertain. The fixtures for instance haven’t yet been confirmed. Players in many divisions have either not started practising or are depending upon insufficient facilities for their training.
The changes made by the BCB for this year’s NCL was an attempt to base the league on more professional grounds.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Tuesday that it will introduce day-night first-class match in the forthcoming National Cricket League in line with the guideline of the International Cricket Council.
‘The opening game and the final match of National Cricket League will be a day-night affair and a pink ball will be used as per the rule of the ICC,’ BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters at a news conference after an emergency meeting.
Kamal added that the forthcoming NCL, which is expected to begin on October 14, will be franchise-based, something which they have planned for years but could not implement.
‘We are not sure if we have a franchise for one or two teams but let’s begin it from somewhere,’ said Kamal.
The lone first-class tournament of the country began in 2000-01 and since then the respective divisions used to run their team.
It was also decided that each division will have a cricket operation manager who will look after their respective divisions.
‘We will select those managers but they have to be from those divisions,’ said Kamal.
‘He will look after and be a part of the team as well as provide us with the development chart in those respective divisions,’ he added.
In the meeting, the disciplinary matter related to batsman Shahriar Nafees‘conduct during the Bangladesh ‘A’ team’s recent tour of India has been referred to the BCB’s disciplinary committee and the committee has been asked to submit a report in 14 days.
Shahriar was sent back home from the middle of the Shafi Dharashah tournament after team management reported against him for behaving rudely during a match against the host side.
The performance of the Under-19 team in the ICC U-19 World Cup in Australia was also evaluated and it was decided that the two top performers of Bangladesh in the tournament would be rewarded with TK 2, 00,000 each.
The other members of the squad will get Tk one lakh each. The BCB also announced a cash incentive for the national players who won 3-0 against Ireland in a recent Twenty20 series. The detail of the incentives for Ireland series, however, was not provided.

It was Rangpur’s maiden win in the National Cricket League when they overturned Khulna by five wickets at the Jessore Stadium yesterday.
The three-day finish also meant that the league leaders lost for the first time in five rounds. Elsewhere, Rajshahi are poised for their third win, Dhaka have a tricky final day chase and in the Dhaka Metropolis-Chittagong run-fest, Mohammad Ashraful struck a hundred for the first time since October last year.
KHULNA-RANGPUR
Tariq Ahmed played the archetypal captain’s knock as his 65 helped Rangpur to their first-ever win in first-class cricket.
When young all-rounders Mahmudul Hasan and Ariful Haque shepherded the chase to the visitors’ winning target, it was sheer delight for Tariq. “It is huge for Rangpur, and I’m very happy to have made runs when it really mattered,” he said.
“There was obviously no chance of a draw but the wicket itself was result-oriented as there was awkward bounce on the third day,” he added.
After a 51-run opening stand between Robiul Islam and Ahsanul Lipu, Tariq and Robiul both struck half-centuries as they added 69 for the second wicket. Later on, Mahmudul Hasan thwarted Khulna’s left-arm spinner Murad Khan for an hour to reach 223-5 in the afternoon session.
“We needed a good start and we got a 51-run stand. Afterwards, I thought one more 100-plus partnership would do the job. We didn’t get it but we got the job done in the end. I thought [Mahmudul Hasan] Limon and Tanvir [Haider] batted very well to get us to the winning target,” he added.
Murad ended with match figures of 11 for 129 but it was not enough for the table-toppers who had a poor game with the bat.
RAJSHAHI-SYLHET
Resuming on a precarious 168-6, the Sylhet lower-order batted very well to keep the Rajshahi’s on the field for two sessions (47.4 overs) at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra.
Tapash Baisya belted four boundaries and two sixes in his 116-ball 59 that held the tail together for the entire time. He was the last man out, setting Rajshahi a competitive 223-run target.
The defending champions made a poor start, losing four wickets by the 18th over but skipper Anisur Rahman and Hamidul Islam added 93 for the fifth wicket in quick time. But the veteran Anisur fell after a rapid 51, leaving the young wicketkeeper to finish the job on the final day Jubair Ahmed (12 not out) and the tail.
BARISAL-DHAKA
The theme of a third-day repair job continued at the Barisal Stadium where the hosts rose from the overnight 70-3 to 278 all out.
The unlikely hero with the bat was Syed Rasel who hammered four sixes and nine boundaries in his 91. During his 2½ stay, the tail-ender added 75 for the fifth wicket with Reazul Karim and 82 with Monir Hossain (40) for the eighth wicket.
It gave Dhaka a 263-run chase in bit more than a day. It was a disastrous start when Anwar Hossain fell in the 13th over while Rony Talukdar, who had scored 21 out of the 36 scored till that point, was bowled by Refatuzzaman Ovi.
Dhaka need a further 208 runs with eight wickets in hand.
CHITTAGONG-DHAKA METRO
It continued to be slow-going at the Sylhet Stadium as the Dhaka Metro-Chittagong game heads for a draw.
After Chittagong declared their first innings 89 runs short of Dhaka’s 393, Mohammad Ashraful brought out all his shots for the first time this year.
The discarded Tigers batsman opened the Dhaka Metro innings and got into the act, hammering a dozen boundaries and two sixes in his 116 off 213 balls.
He remained unbeaten with Mohammad Sharifullah who was on 46.

The Rangpur-Khulna tie of the National Cricket League is evenly poised while Rajshahi, Dhaka and Dhaka Metropolis were in firm control yesterday.
The batsmen continued to struggle as Tasamul Haque’s 125 remained the only century in the fifth round as left-arm spinners Enamul Haque and Murad Khan were on fire while off-spinner Mahmudul Hasan picked up his second five-wicket haul in the competition.
SYLHET-RAJSHAHI
Enamul, who had figures of 10 for 77 in the fourth round game against Dhaka Metro, took the last two Rajshahi wickets to fall in the first innings after the defending champions added 26 runs.
He finished with figures of 6-42 as Sylhet kept down the Rajshahi lead to 75 runs. They began their reply poorly when skipper Imtiaz Hossain was bowled by Mukhtar Ali in the first over and Delwar Hossain trapped Sayem Alam leg-before soon after.
Rumman Ahmed and Saker Ahmed added 80 for the third wicket with the former scoring 45 while the left-arm spinner who was pumped up the order to bat at No 4, batted diligently to score 62 in 282 minutes. Saker struck nine boundaries in his 192-ball innings but fell after Rajin Saleh and Nadif Chowdhury also gave away their wickets.
Having made 168-6, Sylhet are leading by 93 runs with four wickets in hand.
BARISAL-DHAKA
In another low-scoring game, Dhaka found helpful lower-order batsmen to get them a slender 16-run lead in the first innings.
Mosharraf Hossain Rubel and skipper Mohammad Sharif added 97 for the seventh wicket with the spinning all-rounder making 69 off 165 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six. Sharif too added to his first innings hattrick by keeping Rubel company with an industrious 34, this after Dhaka lost their first six wickets for just 59 runs.
Barisal were 70-3 in their second innings, leading by 54 runs with seven wickets in hand and only another lower-order miracle can save them from certain defeat against a strong bowling attack.
KHULNA-RANGPUR
Among the four games, the four-dayer at the Jessore Stadium has all the makings of a Day Three finish as Rangpur require a further 210 to win with all their second innings wickets in hand.
At the start of the day, the visitors added another 49 runs to their first innings before being bowled out for 131 runs in 51.4 overs. The man who did all the damages even on the second day was left-arm spinner Murad Khan, who ended up with seven wickets for 29 runs, easily his best bowling figures in first-class cricket.
Dhiman Ghosh was unbeaten on 61 off 88 balls, the only Rangpur batsman who has stood up to the challenge this season.
Khulna lost early wickets and didn’t make much progress except for opener Nazmus Sadat who struck his first half-century in almost two years.
The left-hander who missed most of last season through injury, made 60 in three hours but the rest struggled as they limped to 214 runs in 67.5 overs.
Mahmudul took five wickets for Rangpur.
Set 223 to win, the northernmost division were 13 for no loss at the close of play.
DHAKA METRO-CHITTAGONG
They could have posted a much bigger first innings score at the Sylhet Stadium but off-spinner Yasin Arafat’s two wickets after Faisal Hossain took the prized scalp of Tasamul Haque who added only five runs to his overnight 120 not out.
Dhaka Metro’s first innings stopped at 393 runs and Chittagong made slow progress, placed at 206-5 in 65 overs.
Nafees Iqbal struck 70 but was one of Arafat Sunny’s four victims as the left-arm spinner ended with figures of 4-51.
Overall, Dhaka Metro lead by 187 runs in the first innings.
SCORES IN BRIEF
SYLHET: First innings 100-9 dec. and second innings 168-6 in 75.4 overs (Saker 62, Rumman 45; Mukhtar 3-42).
RAJSHAHI: First innings 175 all out in 49.1 overs (Sabbir 29, Robiul 18, Hamidul 18; Enamul 6-42).

Khulna’s bowlers did an excellent job on the final day to steer their team to a 31-run victory over Rajshahi in the fourth round of the 13th National Cricket League at the Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jessore yesterday. It was Khulna’s third win making them the third team in this round to secure outright victories after Sylhet, who outplayed Dhaka Metro inside two days, and Chittagong, who beat Dhaka on the third day. Defending champions Rajshahi suffered their second defeat in four matches.
The other match at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra ended in draw as not a single ball could be bowled on the final day due to Wednesday’s heavy reainstorm during the third session of play. The pitch, side wicket and outfield were damaged and rendered unusable.
“It was not possible to cover the pitch and its adjacent areas because of the storm and today’s (Thursday) weather was also gloomy, which is why the ground was unsuitable for play,” said skipper Shahriar Nafees who made 115 runs to guide Barisal, who reached 259 for four in reply to Rangpur’s 407-7dec before rain stopped the match on the third day.
KHULNA-RAJSHAHI
Rajshahi resumed the day on 48 for no loss requiring another 238 runs for victory but they could only add 206 to their total, being bundled out for 254 runs.
Anisur Rahman applied himself during his 128-ball 71 that saw three boundaries and one six but his effort was not good enough to ensure victory. Rajshahi were close to winning the match when Anisur and Jubayer Ahmed were batting, but left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak bowled Jubayer for 35 runs to break the 69-run fifth wicket partnership.
Earlier Al-Amin provided the first breakthrough on the fourth morning by removing Mizanur Rahman for 35 runs.
Dollar Mahmud, Razzak and Taposh Ghosh shattered Rajshahi’s hopes, taking three wickets each.
Sanjamul Islam was the other notable scorer with a 59-ball 36 that featured three boundaries.
Anamul Haque was adjudged man-of-the-match for his hundred (107) in the first innings and 56 runs in the second essay.
