Introduction of online college admission process have got huge response from the candidates this year as 387 colleges under eight general education boards have received nearly 4 lakh applications till today, according to government sources.
Of the total 387 colleges, 153 are under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka and the others are under the seven boards across the country.
Only 29 colleges had adopted online process for admission to higher secondary courses in the last academic session when the system was introduced for the first time. This year, the colleges started receiving online application from May 12 which would continue till June 6. The colleges have been asked to start classes from July 1, according to admission guidelines 2012. Like previous years, no admission tests of viva-voce will be held for admission and the colleges will have to select students on the basis of their previous secondary school certificate exams results.
Interestingly, there is no madrassa or technical college having online admission system this year too as the number of seats in each individual institution are less than 600. The government this year has made the online admission mandatory for the colleges having 600-plus seats. The colleges having 300 plus seats can also be allowed to adopt online admission along with their traditional system.
There are 3,324 general colleges under eight education boards. Besides, there are more than 3,000 madrassas and technical colleges which also offer higher secondary courses.
The number of total seats for the higher secondary courses is more than 16 lakh but the number of successful candidates in this year’s SSC and equivalent exams is above 12 lakh, according to results published on May 7. Only a handful of reputable colleges face difficulty selecting students for admission while some colleges lack students.
Professor Noman Ur Rashid, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education said, “It is a
good sign that more admission-seekers have applied for admission through online. The new system has been introduced to reduce the hassle and corruption in the admission process.”
In the next academic session, the online system will be made mandatory for all the colleges and madrassas as the government has plan to make the total system digital and say good bye to traditional system, he said.
