Communications Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said “sorry” for slapping a train attendant while visiting Ishwardi Railway Station on Saturday.
Also in charge of the railways ministry, Quader slapped Boloram Das across the face for charging extra money for a ticket from a passenger.
“Although public support is in my favour for the slap, as a responsible person I feel that I should not have done this. I felt very sad [later],” said the minister at a meeting with Roads and Highways Department engineers at Sarak Bhaban in the capital.
Later, talking to The Daily Star, Quader apologised for what he had done.
He, however, referred to the public reaction in prothomalo.com on the news and said 92 percent readers supported his action.
“I also thank those newspapers which published the news on the event. Through the public reaction, I have come to know that some people have different opinions about my action,” he added.
Elaborating on the incident, the minister said, “I saw a poor elderly woman standing on the train with her paralysed husband even after having tickets. They were weeping at not having seats.
“When I asked them about the reason behind their predicament, the woman complained that the attendant had asked for extra money from her before she could be given a seat. Then I could not control myself and slapped the attendant, who is very young, as he failed to explain his undue demand for money,” Quader said.
Moreover, the minister explained that the attendant replied in English to show his competence which also irked him.
Sources said the attendant was later handed over to police for demanding the extra money.
At the meeting, the minister asked the engineers to work sincerely to deliver services to the people properly. He also directed them to ensure quality in road construction and maintenance works so that the government did not have to go for repairing again and again.
Talking to The Daily Star, some engineers quoted the minister as saying that he was working relentlessly and would not tolerate any negligence of duty by any officials concerned.
Quader also thanked the engineers for cooperating with him in repairing roads and highways ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Claiming that he did not take any percentage from engineers and contractors for any road construction work, the minister warned that he would go tough against any kind of corruption or irregularities in the RHD.

Communications Minster Obaidul Quader yesterday slapped a train attendant in the face at Ishwardi Railway Station for his poor service and irregularities.
The minister also cancelled the lease of Mahananda Express, which operates between Khulna and Chapainawabganj via Rajshahi, finding its compartments in an unhygienic state.
Quader slapped Boloram Das after a passenger had complained that the attendant demanded extra fare from him although he got on the train with a ticket.
The minister visited the railway station around 10:15am on receiving complaints of poor service, Sujit Kumar, divisional traffic officer of the railway west zone, told The Daily Star.
Quader also transferred two railway staffs and suspended one on complaints from passengers of anomalies and poor service, said Md Ferdous Alam, general manager of Bangladesh Railway western zone.
The staffs transferred are Gazi Ferdous Hassan, station master of Chatmohar train station, and Nasima Khanam, ticket master of Ishwardi station, for selling tickets to scalpers. Md Amirul Islam, an estate official of Pakshey Divisional office, received the suspension order for not checking illegal occupation of the railway lands.
The minister said, “A few corrupt officials are destroying the railway sector. Ticket scalping, misappropriation of fuel, stealing of rail sleepers and such other misdeeds are ruining the sector.”
“I will take actions against the corrupt and the Anti-Corruption Commission will investigate them,” he added.
Later, the minister visited Pakshey divisional rail zone and asked its officials to recover illegally occupied lands within a month, said Kiron Chandra Roy, divisional estate officer (DEO) of the zone.
“Around 140 acre of 1,800 acres of land in Pakshey and Ishwardi zones have been illegally occupied,” said the DEO.
Obaidul Quader then visited the Lalon Shah Bridge in Pakshey and asked its officials to submit an enquiry report to his ministry within 15 days on irregularities of the toll plaza.
Yeafesh Osman, state minister for science, information and communication technology, Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu, lawmaker from Pabna-4 constituency, and high officials of railway and the communications ministry accompanied the minister during the visit.
Quader’s trip ended with a public meeting on the Pabna circuit house premises around noon. In the meeting, the minister said, “Three and a half years of this government has gone. It is time we acted rather than talking.”

The High Court on Sunday asked the Imam Gazzali Institute to vacate the ancestral house of Suchitra Sen, Bangla movies’ legendary actress, and hand it over to the government within two months.
The bench of Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Md Jahangir Hossain also asked the government to implement the plan to set up a centre there to preserve her memory.
The court issued the directive in its judgment delivered in response to two public interest litigation writ petitions filed to free the house from the possession of illegal occupants.
One of the writ petitions was filed by the Imam Gazzali Institute in 2009, challenging a government order that had asked the institution to vacate Suchitra Sen’s paternal house.
The other petition was filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on July 26 this year to ensure the protection and maintenance of the house.
After the hearing, the High Court bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore on July 26 directed the authorities to recover Suchitra’s house within seven days. The court also directed the authorities to take legal action against the grabbers and submit a report within 10 days.
After hearing an appeal filed the Imam Gazzali Institute against the High Court’s order, the Appellate Division on August 4 ordered maintenance of status quo in connection with the house, and asked both the parties in the case for expeditious disposal of the rules that the High Court Division had issued with regard to the house.
Screen legend Suchitra Sen turned 80 on April 6. She was born in her maternal grandfather’s house in Bhangabari village in Pabna, and grew up at Gopalpur in Pabna town.
Unfortunately her ancestral home is still occupied by the Imam Gazzali Institute, despite deep resentment in the locals. The people of the district want the historic house to be freed from illegal occupation and restored to its former condition.
Suchitra, whose original name was Rama Dasgupta, started her academic career at Mahakali Pathshala in Pabna town, and later studied at Pabna Girls School (now Pabna Government Girls High School).
According to the elderly people of the district, Suchitra’s father, Karunamoy Dasgupta, left Pabna with his whole family just before the Partition in 1947.

5 ‘plotters’ temporarily barred from coming to school
The headmaster of Basherbanda High School, who was convicted in a ‘false charge’ of sexual harassment on July 10, got released upon bail on Sunday as the court granted his petition for appeal.
“I am innocent but was implicated in the false charge due to a conspiracy,” said Md Shamsul Islam, headmaster of Basherbanda High School in Ishwarganj upazila of Pabna district, after coming to the school office on Sunday afternoon.
Classes will resume on Tuesday and the middle term examinations will start on July 21, he told this correspondent yesterday.
On July 10, a mobile court led by Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Zakir Hossain awarded four months’ imprisonment to Headmaster Shamsul Islam on charge of sexually harassing to a class VII student of his school.
Claiming that Shamsul Islam was implicated in a false charge due to some teachers’ conspiracy, aggrieved teachers and students started demonstration and class boycott protesting punishment to the ‘innocent’ headmaster.
“On Sunday noon, we filed two applications on behalf of the harassed headmaster to the district mobile appeal court — one appeal petition and the other for bail. The court granted our applications and granted bail to the headmaster. The court also fixed July 25 for appeal hearing,” said advocate Golam Hasnayen, lawyer of the headmaster.
Additional District Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim, also the judge of the court, said, “The headmaster was granted bail on a Tk 10 thousand bond. As per the mobile court law, the convict can get bail if his prayer for appeal is granted.”
Following a decision in a meeting at the institution on Sunday, Basherbanda school managing committee yesterday issued a notice asking five teachers of the school — Assistant headmaster Md Rafikul Islam, assistant teachers Md Obaidur Rahman, Md Alam Miah, Md Abdul Matin and Abdullah Shamim — not to come to the school until the situation normalises.
“Terming the five teachers as plotters behind the July 10 incident, other teachers, students and their parents are demonstrating and boycotting classes. For the sake of smooth academic activities of the school, we have asked them not to come to school until the problem is solved,” said Md Abdul Matin, a member of the managing committee.
The teachers, students and the guardians who have continued agitation for acquittal of the innocent headmaster are also demanding punishment to the five ‘conspirator’ teachers, locals said.
Ishardi upazila unit of Bangladesh Shikkhak Parishad will form a human chain and hold a rally in Ishwardi upazila headquarters today demanding acquittal of the headmaster from the ‘false charge’.
