WWE legend Paul “Triple H” Levesque has announced his retirement from wrestling. Levesque suffered what WWE described as a “cardiac event” last September and spoke for the first time since his hospitalisation on ESPN’s First Take on Friday (March 25).
Confirming his retirement, Levesque said he now has a defibrillator in his chest so he will never compete in the ring again. “I will never wrestle again,” Levesque said. “First of all, I have a defibrillator in my chest, which, you know, probably not a good idea for me to get zapped on live TV.”
Levesque explained that he was suffering from viral pneumonia in September and his wife, Stephanie McMahon, saw that he was coughing up blood. He then went to hospital where doctors discovered fluid in his lungs and around his heart. After running tests doctors told him his heart was working at a fraction of full strength and he was in “bad” heart failure.
“I was nose-diving and sort of at the 1-yard line of where you don’t want to be really, for your family and your future,” Levesque continued.
“There’s moments in there when they’re putting you out for stuff and you think, ‘Is this it? Do you wake up from this?’ That’s tough to swallow and makes you think differently.”
Levesque is a former multi-time WWE Champion who is currently Executive Vice President of Global Talent Strategy Development and COO for the company.
His last match happened during a WWE house show in Japan in June 2019, whereas his last televised match happened at WWE SuperShowdown against Randy Orton in June 2019.
