The National rounds of the 13th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition concluded on Saturday with a vow to raise awareness and interest in the international humanitarian law.

The Dhaka University team was declared the winner of the competition after a final round against the Jahangirnagar University team held on the IUB campus on the day in the capital.

The International Committee of the Red Cross and Independent University, Bangladesh jointly organised the competition on the international humanitarian law, said a press release.

Apart from raising awareness on the international humanitarian law, another main objective of this competition was to develop advocacy skills of young law students through a friendly competition.

The top two teams from the national rounds will represent Bangladesh in the South Asia Regional Rounds to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

More than 81 law students from 27 universities across the country took part in the competition between September 22 and September 24 in several competitive rounds of mooting.

Justice Obaidul Hassan in his speech said, ‘Law students should engage proactively in Moot Court Competitions with a view to realise the full circle of professional knowledge’.

‘The basic spirit of international humanitarian law is a universal humanitarian principle that preserves human dignity even during war,’ said Fabrice Edouard, Deputy Head of Delegation, ICRC Bangladesh.

University Grants Commission member professor Biswajit Chanda said that law graduates should have solid foundation over theoretical and philosophical foundations for bringing success into their professional life.

IUB vice-chancellor Tanweer Hasan said that moot court or mock trial could be the only way to get into the reality as a law student before joining the practical world.

IUB pro-vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, law department adviser professor Borhan Uddin Khan and ICRC legal advisers were also present.
