Pace bowler Rubel Hossain proved his worth to the Bangladesh cricket team by uplifting the Tigers morale through his fiery opening spell against South Africa in the second one-day international at Mirpur on Sunday. Rubel was sidelined in the opening game of the three-match ODI against South Africa as the think-tank felt he wasn’t be capable of having an impact on the visitors with his pace, due to their mastery of it.
Rubel did not take long to show where he belonged after being included in the do-or-die affair for Tigers and successfully injected some belief in the mind of his team-mates by putting pressure on the opponent, a rare occasion in the ongoing series so far.
Rubel uprooted the off-stump of Proteas skipper Hashim Amla in his second over and kept on tormenting his counterparts with his pace, coupled with his line and length, to produce an impressive opening spell of 4-2-12-1.
Though it hardly looked productive wicket-wise, nevertheless, it served his team-mates with a timely tonic that helped in bringing down their opponents into an uncomfortable mental state.
South Africa had already brought down the Tigers to earth as they swept away the two-match Twenty20 series and followed it with a comprehensive eight-wicket win in the opening ODI, suggesting it wouldn’t be much different from the Twenty20.
However, Bangladesh had a completely changed body language in this game where they start taking control of it after the departure of the reliable Amla.
Tigers picked their tempo as ace spinner Sakib al Hasan and Rubel came to the attack after Mashrafee opted to introduce new bowlers from both ends that helped them resist Proteas from scoring freely.
Nasir picked 3-24 with his off-spin while Mustafiz grabbed 3-38 benefitting from the visitors badly looking to increase the run-rate that eventually cost them dearly, when they were bundled out for a meagre 162 all out in 46 overs.

Pace bowler Rubel Hossain felt he is finally getting back his old rhythm ahead of the upcoming series against Sri Lanka after putting in a match-winning performance for Chittagong Kings against Duronto Rajshahi in the Bangladesh Premier League on Wednesday.
Rubel had let Kings down in the previous match by conceding 16 runs in the last over, but he bounced back in style to bowl two brilliant overs against Duronto, which became the turning point of the crucial game.
‘I feel that I am getting back the rhythm and can in put the same amount of effort,’ Rubel told reporters after his 2-23 in the high-scoring do-or-die clash at Mirpur.
‘I was injured during the last one year so I could not work with my bowling during the-slog overs,’ said Rubel, who returned to international cricket with the West Indies series after recovering from a shoulder injury.
‘I want to come back to that place where I was before as I used to bowl well in the slog-overs,’ he said.
The paceman was confident of making a good contribution after repeatedly bowling in a tight situation in the BPL.
‘Every player is playing matches in the BPL and everyone is trying to bowl some extra overs to get a feel of the Test matches,’ he said.
‘Mahela and Sangakkara are all reputed international players but there are equally reputed players in the BPL and bowling against them always increases your confidence,’ he said, referring to Sri Lanka’s two batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

Bangladeshi pace bowler Rubel Hossain had a lengthy but successful operation on his injured right shoulder in South Africa on Friday, said the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Saturday.
‘He had an arthroscopy operation on his right shoulder that took nearly three hours and a half but it was successful,’ said Monirul Amin, a physician of the BCB.
‘After the operation he has been kept in the intensive care unit and if there is no serious problem then he should be released today [Saturday]. Our physio Vibhav Singh is staying there and keeping us updated about him on a regular basis,’ said Monirul.
Rubel had sustained injury in his shoulder during the Test series against Pakistan late last year and still played in a Bangladesh Premier League match only to aggravate his injury.
The right-arm paceman with a sling action was hurt while playing for Sylhet Royals against Barisal Burners in the BPL opening match on February 10.
He could bowl only two overs before walking off the field.
Joe de Beer, an internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon, conducted the operation on Rubel’s shoulder at the Cape Eye Hospital in Cape Town.
Monirul said that it will keep the 22-year-old out of the game for at least eight weeks, and if any complicacy arises then he will be out for action for six months.
‘It depends on the gravity of the operation and the way he does his rehabilitation. Usually in such cases the patient needs eight weeks’ rest but if it turns severe then he might be out for six month,’ said Monirul.
‘We still haven’t got the medical report and unless we get it, we cannot exactly say when he will return to action,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Tigers’ physio tweeted that Rubel Hossain is fine and hopes to be discharged from the hospital today.
‘Rubel is doing well after his operation today and is taking rest. He will be discharged tomorrow (today) from hospital,’ Vibhav tweeted on Saturday.

Rubel Hossain’s shoulder injury could keep him out of cricket for the better part of six months which could hurt the Tigers who are still without a stable new ball attack in all formats.
The Bagerhat-born paceman was hurt while playing for Sylhet Royals against Barisal Burners in the Bangladesh Premier League on February 10. He bowled only two overs in the inaugural game of the T20 competition before pulling up.
The required operation, whether a complicated one or a mere clean-up job, will keep the 22-year-old out of the game for at least eight weeks, and if he needs the more complicated procedure, will keep him out for six months.
“We have done double MRIs and had to correspond it with different places and that took some time. We took opinions to ensure a better operation,” said Dr Debashish Chowdhury, Bangladesh Cricket Board’s physician, who along with Tigers physio Vibhav Singh suggested to the Bangladesh Cricket Board that Rubel and Shafiul Islam, who suffered shoulder damage during the Asia Cup last month, must see a shoulder specialist in Cape Town.
“We have submitted the official report on Rubel [Hossain] and Shafiul [Islam] yesterday [Sunday],” he said, “Regarding Rubel we have suggested that he needs an operation and it should be done in South Africa.”
“After the real operation, he will need six months to recover. And if he does the smaller surgery, he will need six weeks to come back. He needs the operation because he can’t throw or dive, he can still bowl though.”
Debashish however admitted that time is of the essence for Rubel and swift action from the cricket board is a must, while adding that Shafiul can be healed in a more traditional way.
“It is getting a little late regarding Rubel because the operation is very complicated. We have no first-hand experience of it. Shafiul can continue the conservative treatment which he is undertaking,” he said.
Shafiul suffered an injury on his right shoulder when he dove at fine leg to save a boundary during the famous win against India in the Asia Cup. The initial X-ray report cleared him of any fracture in the region but there was some soft tissue damage.
Vibhav has been working with both pace bowlers, who have had regular gym sessions in Mirpur, after the Asia Cup but the South African physio hasn’t seen any healing in Rubel’s shoulder, it was learned.
As one of the brighter pace bowling prospects in the country, Rubel has gone from strength to strength after making his debut in mid-2009. He has improved over the three years, till he played the Pakistan series in December. In the absence of Mashrafe, he has carried the pace attack as Shafiul hasn’t taken himself to the next level while the likes of Shahadat Hossain and Robiul Islam haven’t had a similar impact in any format.
Chief selector Akram Khan believes that the country’s lack of pace options has received a further blow without Rubel.
“Rubel is one of our best bowlers and we felt his absence during the Asia Cup. He has served the country since making his debut and is one of our bright prospects. We are missing him,” said Akram.
“All three of us selectors are conducting hunts in the age-group levels from the Under-16s to the Under-19s. We have plans to put together a pace camp during the off-season because as far as I am concerned, fast bowlers are not selected looking at age, you need height, speed, etc,” said the former national captain.

Pacer Rubel Hossain has set himself a target to be among the best three bowlers at the upcoming World Cup as the Bangladesh national team finished their three-day preparation camp in Chittagong on Friday.
Rubel, who injured his right-hand index finger while trying to catch a ball coming from Tamim’s bat during practice at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium just a day before the left for Chittagong, bowled a few overs in the nets during the last day’s practice session at the Johur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
However, skipper Sakib al Hasan along with Imrul Kayes, Shafiul Islam, Abdur Razzak, Junaed Siddique and Nazmul Hossain skipped the practice session at the stadium and instead had a gym work.
‘I want to get my name included among the best three bowlers in the upcoming World Cup,’ Rubel Hossain told reporters at the stadium
‘Though there is a little pain in my finger still I didn’t had any problem in bowling,’ said Rubel.
He was also satisfied with their preparation in the port city as it allowed the players to adapt to the condition where two World Cup matches are scheduled to be played along with a warm-up game.
‘This camp will certainly benefit us as we have two World Cup matches at this venue. We came here to get ourselves accustomed to this condition and we have done it quite well as we could also practise under the floodlights,’ said Rubel. Bangladesh team returned from Chittagong on Friday and they are expected to start their preparation camp in Dhaka on February 7.

Right-arm fast bowler Rubel Hossain wanted to quit cricket and concentrate on his studies as he was not getting the right kind of break he would have liked at the start of his career with the third division team Hillol Sporting Club in 2005. At that point in time GrameenPhone launched its first pacer hunt programme where he could not make his mark that prompted him to give up cricket.  But at the insistence of his mother Robezan Bibi he tried his luck in the next year and grabbed the spotlight with his extraordinary pace, topping the speed gun. He joined the premier league side Victoria Sporting Club in 2007 and made his cricketing debut in the national league the same year, playing for Chittagong Division.  Apart from cricket, he loves to ride bikes as it allows him to experience speed. Rubel was included in the Bangladesh’s Under-19 squad for the World Cup in 2008 and received a call-up to the Bangladesh one-day squad for the home series against Sri Lanka, in which he made an immediate impact picking up four wickets for 33 runs in the first match, and for the Zimbabwe tour the following year. He made his Test debut on the West Indies tour in 2009 and picked up three wickets in the first innings of the first Test. ‘I want to make a significant contribution so that it helps our team to the maximum,’ said Rubel. –– New Age
