Shah Rukh Khan, a Bollywood superstar, was detained at White Plains Airport in New York by US immigration for an hour and half when he arrived there in a private plane on April 12, 2012 to deliver a lecture at the Yale University where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow. He was allowed to go only after his hosts intervened and took up the matter with the Department of Homeland Security in Washington.
At Yale, Shah Rukh Khan was apparently annoyed. He started his speech jokingly by referring to the incident. He said, “It is nice to be here finally! I was detained at the airport for an hour and half, as always…Whenever I feel arrogant about myself, I take a trip to America…the immigration guys kick the star out of stardom!”
I was in New York City when this incident occurred. I got the information first from my daughter Usha who attended the ceremony at the Yale University. This is the second time Khan was detained by the US immigration. The last time it happened to him was at Newark Airport in 2009.
Peter Vrooman, a spokesperson of the US Embassy in India immediately issued a statement apologising for the incident. “Please allow me on behalf of our diplomatic mission in India to apologise if Mr. Khan experienced an inconvenience or delay in White Plains, New York, on way to Yale University.” The State Department also issued a similar statement. Security experts explained that Khan was a victim of a random selection process.
In the past, several Indian dignitaries were detained at US airports. Former Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar was frisked by a security agent in December 2010. According to some reports, she was singled out because she was wearing a sari. US officials again apologised and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised that such incidents would not recur. In 2009, US Continental Airlines apologised for frisking former Indian President Dr. Abul Kalam before he boarded a flight to the States.
If VIPs like Dr. Abul Kalam and Khan could be harassed by US immigration/security personnel, what can happen to ordinary people like us? Well, I was detained three times by the US Immigration. Every time the officer apologised for the inconvenience. This time I was told that there was confusion about my name. I found out from the Internet that that there was an Afghan suspect named Abdul Matin who was detained in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. It is quite probable that every time I pass through immigration, they make sure that I am not the Afghan suspect! I wonder whether the Afghan suspect would ever travel to the United States using the same name!
At one time I felt very bad being detained by immigration every time I came to the US. Now I feel a little better after having seen the cases of Khan and Dr. Abul Kalam. After all, I happen to belong to a select group of VIPs now!
Shakespeare said, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any name would smell as sweet.” He would have perhaps re-written this famous quote if he had travelled to the United States of America in the 21st century!

Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have been named the most bankable stars of Bollywood by ETC Bollywood Business Awards.
Kareena Kapoor, who featured in “Bodyguard” and “RA.One” in 2011 opposite Salman and Shah Rukh, has been adjudged the most bankable actress.
“Receiving an award wherein you are being adjudged considering the economic quotient as a cornerstone for mapping the success gives you a sense of pride. I’ve always maintained that commercial success is as important as the critical success of a movie,” Kareena said in a press statement.
Salman’s “Bodyguard”, the Hindi remake of the Malayalam film by the same name, was assessed as the top grosser of the year 2011. The film’s director Siddique walked away with the most bankable director’s title.

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Don 2’ has taken many people by surprise ever since the actor revealed his weird and unkept hairdo and ruffled beard, specifically grown for the film.
However, the actor is not too fond of it himself and his wife Gauri seems to completely dislike it.
SRK has to sport the look for the last six months before the shooting for the sequel in Malaysia concludes.
When he returned to Delhi mid way to attend a wedding in the family, Gauri asked him to get rid of the look. Apparently she demanded that SRK should complete the rest of the film schedule with a wig.
However, despite hating the look, Khan refused to visit the barber. Ritesh Sidhwani, co-producer of `Don 2`, said to a daily, “When he went to Delhi, he was asked about the long hair and the stubble. But Shah Rukh remained unfazed. He wanted to stay in character throughout.”
Farhan Akhtar, the director of the film whose wife Adhuna Akhtar conceptualised Khan`s look, told a daily “It wasn`t easy to keep that look in the Malaysian humidity. But Shah Rukh told me, his son had said after seeing the look, `Now, that`s what a don should look like`.”
Additionally, Akhtar, wanted `Don` to be re-introduced in a new look in form of a new avatar. So therefore came to birth this new look of SRK.
A source said, “ Khan wanted his anti-hero act in Don 2 to provide a sharp contrast to his superhero role in Ra.One. All the characters in Don 2 are the same as with the original film, except for two additions ” Kunal Kapoor and Lara Dutta. Khan reportedly spent several weeks with makeup professionals and stylists to get the right look.”

After Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched a handsome victory over Kings XI Punjab, KKR owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan Saturday said former KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly who came to see the match at Eden Gardens had brought luck for the team.
“Sourav had brought luck for the team. Sourav was sitting at a place far away from me so we could not talk today. But definitely I will talk to him soon,” said Shah Rukh Khan.
Shah Rukh also expressed his happiness for his team playing well as team.
“To be honest I am a sportsman at heart. I believe that nobody wants to loose, everybody wants to play well and win the game. Whenever I was sad, which was quite often because we didn’t get together as team. I wasn’t sad because of losing I was sad because we didn’t play as unit,” said Shah Rukh Khan. He also reasserted that for him playing well as a unit was more important than winning.
“Even if we don’t win this time I would be ok because this time we are playing well as a team. Gautam and all the young boys are trying really hard, playing hard. We are all playing as a team as a unit we are trying hard and that’s the big thing,” said Khan.
“The boys seemed confident and happy. We are a small unit and we are coming together. But overall a good set of cricket will be played by our team and that’s what make me proud,” he said.
