Shahriar Nafees became the latest cricketer to have benefitted from quitting captaincy in the Bangladesh Premier League when his 51-ball 71 guided a struggling Khulna Royal Bengals to a seven-wicket win over Duronto Rajshahi on Friday.
Shahriar gave up the captaincy after Royal Bengals were shot out for the tournament’s lowest ever total of 67 for an 89-run loss to Chittagong Kings on Thursday night, which effectively threw them out of semi-final race.
But Shahriar said they still wanted to finish the tournament on a high and for that he had sent a text message to the owner of the franchise on their way to the hotel seeking a release from captaincy.
‘I told him to release me from the job. I was scoring enough runs, but could not see the team home. It’s always important to get runs. But the more important thing is seeing the team winning the matches,’ said Shahriar, who with his third fifty-plus innings, is now leading scorer in the tournament with 384 runs.
Lou Vincent went out for the toss instead of Shahriar and found Tamim Iqbal on other side after Duronto Rajshahi also had a dramatic change in their dressing room on the eve of the game.
Duronto’s foreign players had refused to take to the field for a pay dispute and as a result Tamim returned to take the charge in place of first-choice
captain Chamara Kapugedera.
After a lot of drama behind the scene Duronto’s players finally agreed to play but the events had a clear impact on their game as they lost their first six wickets for 64 runs.
All-rounder Mukter Ali rescued the side from further embarrassment with an unbeaten 41 from 30 balls that took them to 138-9, a competitive total on a slow and turning Sher-e-Bangla track.
But Shahriar made it look easy with his new-found approach that saw him hitting 11 fours. He was out at a time when Khulna Royal Bengals needed only six runs and they faced no trouble to get it.
Royal Bengals reached 140-3 with four balls to spare with Jehan Mubarak unbeaten on 30.
Shahriar gave credit for his fine form to BCB game development head Nazmul Abedin, who worked with him for two weeks before the tournament.
‘When I missed the first match of Bangladesh Cricket League [franchise-based four-day competition] I had some spare time with me. I worked with Fahim sir [Nazmul Abedin] and it helped me a lot,’ said Shahriar.

BRIEF SCORES
Duronto Rajshahi 138-9 in 20 overs (M Ali 41 not out, S Ervine 23; K Santokie 3-18, S Islam 2-15) v Khulna Royal Bengals 140-3 in 19.2 overs (S Nafees 71, J Mubarak 30 not out, TR Birt 23; B Edmondson2-29).
Result: Khulna Royal Bengals won by 7 wickets.
Man of the match: S Nafees (KRB).

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) disciplinary committee found Shahriar Nafees guilty of misconduct and imposed a ‘suspended sentence’ on the left-handed batsman.
The disciplinary committee talked with the player and team officials yesterday before taking the decision against the left-hander, who was sent back home because of misconduct before the third group game in Bangalore in the Shafi Darashah tournament last month.
“We found him guilty. He certainly breached the players’ code of conduct and he himself admitted that he made a mistake, and promised not to repeat this kind of behaviour in the future. We imposed a suspended sentence which means that a two-match ban will be automatically enforced if he makes the same kind of mistake within the next six months,” informed Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir, the director and chairman of BCB’s disciplinary committee.
“As a captain he cannot behave like he did on the tour, but what we believe is that sending him home was a kind of punishment in itself, which is why we wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself,” added Alamgir.
After this decision the till recently out-of-favour batsman is now available for selection. He will be hoping to be selected to play against the West Indies High Performance team which will arrive today for a tour of Bangladesh. The tour includes one four-day match against the National Cricket Academy team starting from September 16 at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna, a second four-dayer against the Bangladesh A team starting from September 22 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur where they will also play three one-day matches — on September 28, September 30 and October 2 — and two T20 matches on October 4 and October 5 against the same opponents.
Nafees admitted his mistake saying: “Had the dressing room been closed off to the public and not been so open, it wouldn’t have created so much trouble. I could have behaved better and if I had controlled myself, the situation wouldn’t have escalated. I hope the confusion regarding this matter goes away.”
“If I wasn’t captain, it wouldn’t have looked so bad. My behaviour had an adverse effect on my teammates, so I could have been a lot more responsible. If I had kept my cool, the incident wouldn’t have stretched for a month,” he added.
Nafees was not ready to relate this incident with the one he had with A team coach Stuart Barnes in Khulna during the practice prior to the tour of India.
“The two are separate incidents. We trained for two months and there wasn’t anything wrong in the relationship between players and management. I personally don’t want to see the two incidents being related. Whatever has happened is unfortunate,” he explained.

A stunned Bangladesh ‘A’ team skipper Shahriar Nafees returned back from India on Sunday after the Bangladesh Cricket Board withdrew him from the Shafi Dharashah Tournament on disciplinary ground.
‘I really don’t know why I am called back from the competition,’ an agitated Shahriar told New Age after arriving from India.
‘I admit that I showed my anger in the dressing room but that is known as the players’ area and this kind of things often happens there,’ said Shahriar.
It was learnt that Shahriar got involved in a brawl with the umpires after being dismissed in the second match against Karnataka State Cricket Association and created a scene. He stood at the crease for a while claiming that he was not caught and later while returning back to the dressing room he started abusing the umpires.
The total incident took the spectators by surprise, but it was not the end as he had thrown his bat and helmet in the air to show his disgust.
Shahriar refused to accept that allegation and said that he had thrown his cricket gadgets in despair in the dressing room unlike what had been rumoured and that’s quite normal in a cricket match.
‘I admit that I had thrown my helmet and bat, but that I did in the dressing room though it was an open space but unlike what you are saying,’ said Shahriar.
‘The decision was very crucial and we received a few bad decisions from the host umpires that really cost us the game, so my reaction was very natural I believe,’ he said.
Even national head coach Richard Pybus had suggested, during his class with the players, that a batsman can show his anger in the players area for 10 minutes to get himself relived,’ he added.
When asked that the incident had such an impact that the match referee called him and gave him warning, Shahriar disagreed with it.
‘I was called by the match referee but that was not because of my incident. I was called because we appealed a lot in the second innings and I was asked why I could not control the boys as I was the skipper of the team,’ said Shahriar.
‘If I was the person to be blamed than he would have warned me, but that was not the case,’ said Shahriar.
After the incident, ‘A’ team’s coach Stuart Barnes emailed and complained against the left-hander that made the board take this step.
Shahriar added that he had an altercation with Barnes after he asked him to calm down.
‘Barnes asked me why I was behaving in that manner and I replied back
that for some crucial decisions my team is losing and you ask me to control my emotions,’ he added.
It was learnt that the Board was receiving complains about Shahriar, from the beginning of the camp, being a nagging character and earlier he along with some players had a burst up with the Barnes in Khulna when the players were asked to run after the match.
BCB cricket operation chairman Enayet Hossian said that it was the decision of the team management to send him back.
‘It was a decision of the team management to send him back and the Board agreed with that after what had happened in the last match,’ said Seraj.
Insiders suggest that the left-hander seemed to be frustrated after he was not included in the 30-member preliminary squad for the ICC World Twenty20.

Shahriar to lead BCB XI
Shahriar Nafees will lead a batsman-heavy BCB XI side against West Indies in the first practice match at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium on Friday.
The left-handed Nafees, who is part of the Tigers’ ODI plans but was ignored for the only Twenty20 against the tourists, will have Junaed Siddiqui, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Rokibul Hasan, Naeem Islam, Nasir Hossain and Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury for company.
Among them, Nafees will have to ward off direct competition from Junaed while Shuvogata is also in contention. Rokibul also has an opportunity to stake a claim for a Test spot.
The bowlers, meanwhile, are mostly from the GP-BCB National Cricket Academy. Alauddin Babu, Kamrul Islam Rabbi and off-spinner Sohag Gazi will back the more experienced Robiul Islam.
Batsman Mominul Haque might get a look-in though the top-heavy look means the youngster has less opportunity to play against an international team for the first time.
The visitors will play the second practice match on October 9.
SQUAD
Shahriar Nafees (captain), Junaed Siddiqui, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Rokibul Hasan, Naeem Islam, Nasir Hossain, Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury, Sahagir Hossain (wicketkeeper), Robiul Islam, Alauddin Babu, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Sohag Gazi, Mominul Haque.

Shahriar Nafees continued his good form in the practice matches as the left-hander hit 72 against the GP-BCB National Cricket Academy team in a rain-interrupted day at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
The national batsmen looked quite uncomfortable against the young academy bowlers and the 104-ball 72 from opener Nafees, who slammed a hundred in the previous two-day match against the same opponents at the same venue, helped the seniors to post 258 runs before being all out in 59.3 overs.
Left-arm spinner Shaker Ahmed dismissed Nafees, who smote thirteen boundaries, but the batsman was not happy with the verdict of the umpire and expressed his anger in an unsporting way.
The other top order batsmen however failed to capitalize on their last opportunities of making some runs before the demanding trip to Zimbabwe as Imrul Kayes scored 20 while Junaed Siddiqui got out cheaply for eight and Mohammad Ashraful failed to score facing 12 balls.
Wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (18) and Mahmudullah Riyad (29) got off to good starts but failed to carry on.
The second highest score in the team came from Shuvagoto Hom Chowdhury, who made 36 off 38 balls with six boundaries and one over boundary while Shafiul Islam produced another big-hitting display as the right-hander smashed three fours and as many sixes to score a run-a-ball 34.
Pacer Sohag Gazi was the most successful academy bowler with four for 94 while Mohammad Al-Amin and Shaker took two wickets each.
The Academy lost two wickets for 24 runs before the day’s play was finished. Pacer Robiul Islam and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak claimed one wicket each.
The Tigers will play their last practice match today at home before leaving the capital on July 27 to play one Test and five one-day internationals in Zimbabwe.

Shahriar Nafees took another step towards a return to the Test team when he struck 115 against the GP-BCB National Cricket Academy on Sunday.
The two-day match was marred by rain yesterday with only nine overs of the Academy side’s innings possible (33 for one) but on Day One, it was Nafees who stood out with a typically phlegmatic knock.
After Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and elected to bat first, the national side made 388 for 7 in 90 overs.
Nafees struck 17 boundaries and three sixes during his 168-ball knock.
“The innings felt good and it is always great to score big,” said Nafees.
“Whether I will get back in the Test team entirely depends on the selectors and team management. I have fulfilled my part of the work so I’m happy. There is more bounce in Zimbabwe wickets though the nature is generally similar to ours. Like everyone else, I’m also working on the back foot shots in the indoors,” added the man who last played a Test match in January 2010, against India.
Apart from Nafees, Mohammad Ashraful struck 77 while Mahmudullah Riyad blasted a 78-ball 75 with eight fours and three sixes.
It was an encouraging sign from Ashraful, who returned to the national team after being cast aside for the series against Australia in April.
For the Academy side, off-spinner Mahmudul Hasan took four wickets while Mukhtar Ali, Sanzamul Islam and Soumya Sarkar picked up one each.

Shahriar Nafees continued his good form with a century for Barisal in their last National Cricket League game against Sylhet at the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi yesterday.
It was a captain’s knock from the left-hander as his side crumbled in front of Alok Kapali’s leg-spin to be bowled out for 257, Sylhet replying with six for no loss at stumps.
At the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, Dhaka made 217-6 in their first innings against Rajshahi.
BARISAL-SYLHET
Nafees, who showed great form with the bat against Australia recently, hit fourteen fours and one six in his innings of 226 balls.
Put into bat by Sylhet skipper Kapali, Barisal were in trouble when Fakhrul Islam struck twice to remove both openers.
Nafees’s younger brother Iftekhar Nayeem, who hit an impressive century in the last match, came in at No 4 and the brothers shared a partnership of 103 runs.
Nayeem got out on 46 after hitting six boundaries and a six in his 96-ball knock.
Sohag Gazi was the only other batsman who made a notable contribution with his 47, hitting eight boundaries off 85 balls but it was the Sylhet captain who did a fine job with the ball.
Kapali picked up five wickets giving away just 45 runs from his 19 overs. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed also took two wickets as did paceman Fakhrul.
Apart from Nafees, Nayeem and Gazi, none of the other Barisal batsmen made a decent score with last match’s centurion Shahin Hossain getting out after a painstaking 17.
Sylhet batted three overs before the end of the day’s play and scored six runs with both openers unbeaten at the crease.
RAJSHAHI-DHAKA
Dhaka, led by Mosharraf Hossain Rubel, decided to bat first and finished the day on 217 for six.
Rubel once again showed his batting quality scoring 69 of 212 balls with nine fours after the top-order fell off for just 21 runs in the 15th over.
The tall left-handed all-rounder added 75 for the fourth wicket with Mehrab Hossain to consolidate the Dhaka innings but the latter fell for 42. But Rubel kept up the partnerships going as he added a further 81 for the fifth wicket with Tayebur Rahman, who made 36.
Asif Iqbal and wicketkeeper Arman Hossain were unbeaten on 21 and 18 respectively.
For Rajshahi, pacemen Delwar Hossain and Mohammad Shahjada took two wickets each.
BRIEF SCORES
BARISAL: First innings 257 all out (Nafees 123, Gazi 47; Alok 5-45, Fakhrul 2-43).
SYLHET: First innings 6-0 (Saikat 5 not out, Imtiaz 1 not out).
DHAKA: First innings 217-6 (Mosharraf 69, Mehrab 42; Shahjada 2-23, Delwar 2-33).

Shahriar Nafees scored a cautious unbeaten 82 to guide the Bangladesh national side to a two-wicket victory over the Bangladesh A team in a practice match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.
The national squad suffered a scare after losing six wickets for 103 runs, chasing a modest target of 202 while Shahriar was protecting the other end batting at number three.
Shahriar added 53 runs for the seventh wicket with his uncapped team-mate Shubhagata Hom to stem the rot.
Things might have gone the other way had the A team left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib not dropped Shubhagata on 28 off his own ball.
The national side, however, once again fell under pressure as they lost two more wickets with 33 more runs needed for a win but Shahriar kept his cool to steer his team home with the help of Mashrafee bin Murtaza.
Earlier in the morning, A team captain Mohammad Ashraful won the toss and chose to bat.
The openers proved their skipper’s decision was right as they put on 55 runs for the first wicket but the junior side failed to finish well as they were bundled out for 201 runs despite of a blistering 47 by the captain.
The national team’s left-arm spinning duo Abdur Razzak and Sohrawardi Shuvo took three wickets each while Mashrafee also bowled in a match after almost a three-month gap due to a knee injury.
‘Still I am not fully fit as I was out of practice and could not do my gym works last month for some personal problems. I don’t know whether I will be able to give my best in the upcoming series,’ said the express bowler after bowling eight overs in the match.
Mashrafee postponed his knee operation because of the Australian series. He did not get any wicket and conceded 36 runs in the eight overs he bowled.

Left-handed batsman Shahriar Nafees admitted that batting at number three in the national team will not be a problem for him as he plays in that position in the domestic cricket leagues.
Shahriar in all probability will be filling that position in the upcoming home series against Australia in place of Junaed Siddique, who was dropped after the World Cup and will tour South Africa with the Bangladesh A team.
The stylish batsman responded well in his new role to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat with a match winning performance, scoring unbeaten 82 runs against Bangladesh A in a practice match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Friday.
‘I am comfortable with batting at number three,’ Shahriar told New Age after the match.
‘In the National Cricket League and Premier League I have been batting in that position for the last two years, so I have no problem in batting in that slot,’ said Shariar.
‘I always try to play in any position I am asked to but number three is a comfortable place for me,’ said Shahriar.
Shahriar thinks that the innings has come timely before the series against Australia. He featured in two matches in the World Cup and scored only 42 runs.
‘Before the Australia series this is the last practice match and I did not feature in all the matches of the World Cup, so I felt there was a bit of match practice as far as I am concerned,’ said Shahriar.
‘I took the opportunity to rectify my mistakes, but all will be well if I can repeat this performance against the Australians,’ he added.
He was also aware that the Australians would be eager to prove their supremacy after their early exit from the World Cup.
‘Definitely Australia will be desperate to prove themselves and that’s why they are sending their full-strength side,’ said Shahriar.
Shahriar hoped his team-mates will follow the instructions of their Australian coach Jamie Siddons, who earlier worked with the Australian team as a batting coach, in order to make a good preparation and put up a good show in the series.
‘Jamie Siddons had earlier worked with Australia and he knows a lot of things about them,’ said Shahriar.
‘We need to follow his instructions very carefully and if we can implement our plans together then we have a chance,’ said Shahriar.

They could not believe their eyes: the national cricket team heroes are here playing with them!
“Am I dreaming?” Ismat Ara Shyama asked herself, stopping for a while as she and her classmates surrounded Bangladesh players Junaed Siddique, Mahmudullah Riyad and Shahriar Nafees.
The three national cricketers yesterday went to the Kishalay Girls’ School and College in Mohammadpur to attend the closing event of the ‘Reading Festival’ organised by Room to Read, an educational partner of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The girls said that it was a pleasantly surprising end to their two-day wait when they finally came to know that three national cricketers would be coming to their school to take part in the festival at a time when the entire country is hot with World Cup cricket fever.
“We knew that three cricketers would be coming but we did not know their names. With excitement I passed two restless nights to see the national cricketers closely,” said Shyama.
Shyama’s game partner Rubayat Islam said, “I never thought that I would be able to play with Junaed.
“I thought that I would be able to see the players but actually playing with them was beyond my expectations,” she said, her eyes glittering with joy.
“We cannot express how happy we are. It’s a dream come true,” she added.
Like Shyama and Rubayat, it was a day of extreme joy and gaiety for some 200 students of the school who kept on screaming and cheering during the hour-long stay of the cricketers.
Most of the students expected Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan and vice captain Tamim Iqbal to attend the programme. But even though they did not attend, it did not have any impact on their zeal as they were seen busy taking photographs and autographs of the players amid tight security.
Room to Read chose the school for the closing ceremony because of time and security issues of the players. Every year, the organisation holds the function, which comprises of some language games and reading, writing and drawing activities, at their programme areas.
Currently, the organisation is working in two districts — Sirajganj and Brahambaria — since 2009 and are supporting 269 government or registered primary and six secondary schools to promote the skill and habit of reading.
Yesterday, Junaed, Mahmudullah and Nafees took part in a reading-based game called ‘Read and Run’ with the three separate teams. Junaed’s team won.
“It was a great game which taught us a lot,” said Rubayat, whose team Junaed played in.
However, the scenario was a bit less exciting for 13 girls who came from remote Chars of Sirajganj under Room to Read’s education assistance programme for girls.
Even though a number of them are not accustomed to cricket or national cricketers they still enjoyed the event yesterday.
Hawa Khatun, student of class VIII of Sholoshatak Jangolia High School in Sirajganj, said that since they have no electricity they watch the World Cup through battery-operated televisions.
These 13 girls were awarded for their outstanding result in the terminal exams in their respective classes despite staying in the remote chars.
The cricketers handed over a crest to the 13 girls and prizes to the winners of several games took place at the school yesterday.
Speaking on behalf of the players at the event, Shahriar Nafees urged the students to read more to acquire knowledge.
“We practice hard to attain perfection in the game. Similarly, you need to practice more for the perfection of your brain and the practice is reading,” he said.
