Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan will enter the ICC T20 World Cup on top of the world after he was elevated to the No.1 spot for all-rounders on the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings.

Shakib claimed top billing on the back of an excellent tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan, with the veteran hitting consecutive half-centuries during Bangladesh’s final two matches.

That form saw Shakib move in front of Afghanistan ace Mohammad Nabi and in to the top ranking for all-rounders, ahead of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.

Namibia star JJ Smit (up four places to fourth) and Zimbabwe veteran Sikandar Raza (up four spots to seventh) make eye-catching moves on the list for all-rounders following impressive starts to their T20 World Cup tournament, while the race for the top batter ranking looks one to keep an eye on over the next few weeks Down Under.

Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan (861 rating points) further extended his lead at the top of the T20I batter rankings after yet another consistent showing during the tri-series in New Zealand, while India starlet Suryakumar Yadav (838) is still second ahead of the blockbuster clash between the two sides at the MCG on Sunday.

Rizwan’s skipper Babar Azam (808) is third on the T20I batter rankings and the trio look set to battle it out for the top spot over the remainder of the T20 World Cup.

The only movement inside the top 10 following the latest rankings update for batters saw aggressive New Zealand right-hander Glenn Phillips jump an impressive 13 spots to equal 10th on the back of his strong tri-series efforts against Bangladesh and Pakistan.

There was some slight movement inside the top 10 on the updated list for bowlers, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman (up two spots to fifth) and South Africa counterpart Keshav Maharaj (up one place to eighth) on the move.

Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood (705 rating points) retains his lead at the top of the rankings for T20I bowlers, but Afghanistan tweaker Rashid Khan (696), Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (692) and South Africa veteran Tabraiz Shamsi (688) are all within striking distance.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has reclaimed the top spot in the T20I all-rounder rankings, according to the weekly rankings revealed by the International cricket Council on Wednesday.

Shakib overtook Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi, who has seen a reduction of six rating points.

Nabi now has a rating point of 246 while Shakib’s rating point is 248.

Nabi had a disappointing Asia Cup campaign, scoring just 16 runs in the four innings that he batted in the five Asia Cup matches.

The reduction in Nabi’s rating points saw Shakib jump to the top spot after almost a year.

Meanwhile, India star Virat Kohli and Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga have been rewarded for their dominant performances at the Asia Cup by making giant strides in the rankings.

Kohli scored his first international century in almost three years and scored an impressive 276 runs at the Asia Cup.

He improved a total of 14 spots to 15th overall on the T20I batter rankings due to his efforts.

Hasaranga’s rise was just as impressive, with the Sri Lanka match-winner jumping up three places to sixth on the bowler rankings and seven spots to fourth on the all-rounder list after he was crowned Player of the Tournament at the Asia Cup.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was reappointed as the Bangladesh national team Test captain while in-form wicketkeeper-batter Liton Das was made the vice-captain.
The position of Bangladesh Test captain went vacant after Mominul Haque decided to step down from the role on Tuesday with an aim to focus on his batting.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan made the announcement during a press conference following a board meeting on Thursday.
‘Shakib will be our next Test captain while Liton will be our vice. They will be in the post until further decision is made,’ BCB president Nazmul told the reporters.
Since being appointed as the captain in October 2020, Mominul led Bangladesh in 17 Tests and managed to win just three times, losing on twelve occasions and drawing twice.
The 30-year-old was in hot water over his poor run of form recently, scoring 162 runs at an average of 16.20 in six matches.
Shakib first led the Test team in 2009 in West Indies and continued till 2011 before he was stripped of the captaincy following the Zimbabwe tour.
Later he took over the Test captaincy once again in December 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim.
The 34-year-old played the role for around two years before ICC handed him a one-year ban from all cricket in 2019 for failing to report a bookie’s corrupt approaches.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan sprang a surprise on Saturday stating that he would be available for the forthcoming series against South Africa despite the BCB permitted him a leave until April 30 from all forms of cricket.
‘I have been in a conversation with Papon Bhai [Nazmul Hasan] since the last three days where we could initiate our year-long plan. Since I have been roped in the three formats of cricket in the national contract, I will be available in all formats,’ Shakib told reporters on Saturday.
‘The board must decide when they will permit me to leave and that will start from the South Africa series therefore I will be available in the upcoming series.’
The ace all-rounder, who had a meeting with BCB president on Saturday, additionally informed that he will leave Dhaka for South Africa on Sunday night.
‘I will leave on tomorrow night for South Africa.’
Earlier on Thursday, BCB handed Shakib a break from all forms of cricket till April 30 as the all-rounder claimed that he was too exhausted to feature in Bangladesh’s forthcoming one-day international and Test series against South Africa.
However the BCB chief believes that having a hectic year ahead the players must need an interval for the betterment of cricket.
‘We sat with Shakib with our total plan. Bangladesh is scheduled to play fourteen ODIs, fifteen T20Is and eight Test matches and we need to understand that these are onerous to them the reason why I told them that they need a break occasionally,’ said Nazmul.
‘Since Shakib has told us that he is feeling mentally disturbed, we should be giving him our support. All the talk shows and discussions speculating about it are not good in that context. We have to stand beside someone when they are suffering mentally or physically. Do not speculate because that causes more problems.’

Shakib Al Hasan was retained in all three formats by the Bangladesh Cricket Board in their national players’ contract for 2022, announced on Thursday, despite uncertainty over his future in cricket.
Shakib is one of the five cricketers who have been offered contracts in Tests, one-day internationals and Twenty20s. The other four are Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam.
The all-rounder has been making headlines since Monday when he sprung a request to the board to skip Bangladesh’s South Africa tour just days before the team’s departure.
Shakib claimed to be physically and mentally fatigued and unfit to play cricket for the national team.
The following day, BCB president Nazmul Hasan criticised Shakib for retracting from his earlier promise of playing in the South Africa series, which begins on March 18. But on Wednesday, the BCB seemingly yielded to Shakib’s wishes once again and announced that they have rested the all-rounder from all forms of cricket
till April 30 after
Shakib has been picking and choosing his international appearances for Bangladesh in recent years and is self-admittedly unsure about how long he can continue in all three formats.
But that didn’t make any difference in the fresh contract list as the BCB included Shakib in all three formats.
Meanwhile, the number of contracted player came down to 21 from last year’s 24.
Opener Saif Hasan and pacer Abu Jayed got dropped from the red-ball contract, all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin was axed from white-ball contract while Soumya Sarkar and Shamim Hossain were dropped from the T20 contract.
Yasir Ali and Mahmudul Hasan Joy are the new additions and both have been offered a Test contract.
Taijul Islam, who was part of the Test and ODI contract last year, has been dropped from the 50-over contract but retained in Tests.
The BCB, however, didn’t reveal the salary grade of the players in their announcement.
Players list
Test: Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tamim Iqbal, Mehidy Hasan, Mominul Haque, Taijul Islam, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Ebadot Hossain, Shadman Islam, Yasir Ali, Mahmudul Hasan Joy.
ODI: Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tamim Iqbal, Mehidy Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mustafizur Rahman, Afif Hossain.
T20: Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mahmudullah, Mustafizur Rahman, Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Mohammad Naim, Mahedi Hasan.

Bangladesh Cricket Board on Wednesday rested all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan from all cricket until April 30 after he sought to withdraw from the forthcoming tour of South Africa.
Earlier on Sunday before leaving for Oman, Shakib told the media that he was neither mentally nor physically prepared for the upcoming tour because he did not enjoy his performances in the recently-concluded series against Afghanistan.
‘Shakib had told us he mentally fatigued and physically stressed. We asked him to take time. Today I called him since two days were over. He said he was physically and mentally unfit to play cricket, so he doesn’t want to go South Africa,’ BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters on Wednesday.
He also informed that they will hold an in-person meeting with the ace all-rounder following his return from Dubai on Thursday.
‘We are set to hold a meeting with him after he returns from Dubai on Thursday and will let you the final in this connection.’
Bangladesh cricket team is set to leave for South Africa on March 11 to take part in the three-match ODI and two-match Test series against the hosts.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan continued to keep the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in limbo regarding his availability for international commitments, saying in his latest salvo last night that he was neither mentally nor physically prepared for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
“I felt like a passenger in a car [in the just-concluded series against Afghanistan], which I never want to be. I did not enjoy my performances, either in ODIs or T20Is. I tried but it didn’t work out. I don’t think it would be right for me to play in South Africa in this state of mind. I said this to Jalal [Yunus] bhai and I think he will
think about it. I will also think about it and then a decision should be taken,” Shakib told reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport prior to his departure for Dubai.
“I believe that if I play with such a mental and physical condition, it will ultimately hamper the team’s performance. It would be sad if I failed to meet my expectations or the expectations of my fans. It would be like cheating my teammates if I stay as only a passenger,” Shakib continued.
Shakib was supposed to join the team, slated to depart for South Africa on March 11, directly from Dubai, but he repeatedly told reporters he desperately need a break.
“Yes, I was agreed to play the series and that’s why my name was included in the squad but after the Afghanistan series I felt that I needed a break. In my current state of mind, it would be like cheating my team and my country if I play the series.”
He admitted that there would have been no guarantees that he would perform well had he gone with sound mind and body. But in this current situation, he said it would be like betraying his team. “I don’t want to deprive my team,” he said.
Shakib repeatedly said that playing would be akin to cheating his teammates, the country and himself. He also demanded a long-term plan from the BCB regarding his international commitments instead of deciding on a series-by-series basis given that he is a player approaching the fag end of a long career. He added that
there might be the possibility of him playing only the Tests and skipping the ODIs or some other arrangement of that nature, but could not confirm before discussions.
“What I read in media is that I asked for a six-month break from Tests before the IPL auction, which is not true. I wanted to focus more on white-ball cricket with the next World Cup in mind. We have two World Cups. I think we can achieve big things there. That’s why I wanted to focus more on white-ball cricket. That doesn’t
mean I will not play Test cricket. But I need a proper plan at this stage of my career,” he said.
When contacted, BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Yunus said: “He rang me up today and spoke about mental fatigue. He was not motivated to play so his performances were not up to the mark in the last series. But he did not say he would not play in the South Africa series. He said that he need a break and
he misses his family. I just told him to talk with me again after two days. That’s it.”
The first ODI will be played in Centurion on March 18. The second and third ODIs are scheduled for March 20 and 23 in Johannesburg and Centurion respectively. The opening Test will be played on March 31 while the final Test is scheduled for April 8.
The ODI and the Test series will be part of the ICC ODI Super League and World Test Championship respectively.

Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the forthcoming series against South Africa suffered a fresh blow when the ace Bangladeshi all-rounder said that he was not mentally prepared enough for the tour because he did not enjoy his performances in the recently-concluded series against Afghanistan.
Shakib remained lackluster in the ODI series against Afghanistan compared to his usual standards. The southpaw scored 60 runs and claimed five wickets.
In the T20I series, Shakib only scored 14 runs in two matches and took 2-16 in the first game but gave away 32 runs in 3 overs in the next.
‘I felt like a passenger in a car [during Afghanistan series], which I never want to be in either the ODI or T20I series. I tried but it didn’t work out. I don’t think it would be right for me to play in South Africa in this state of mind,’ Shakib told media at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday night before leaving for
Dubai.
Prior to his departure to the middle-east nation the all-rounder attended Mohammedan Sporting Club’s jersey unveiling programme for the upcoming Dhaka Premier League.
Previously, Shakib had asked the BCB about his intention to skip the South Africa series before the Indian Premier League auction began.
However, as the all-rounder remained unsold in the auction, Shakib’s involvement in the Test team was confirmed on Friday when the BCB named him in the Test squad for the series.
‘I said this to Jalal [Yunus] bhai and I think he will think about this and I will also think about it and then a decision should be taken,’ Shakib added.
