Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal informed his troops, including star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, are eager to rise above the challenges against hosts South Africa as the bilateral three-match ODI series begins tomorrow in Centurion.
And Shakib, despite the episodes surrounding his involvement prior to the series, is likely to feature in all games, according to Tamim.
“I didn’t receive any message in which I was told that Shakib should be rested for one or two matches. He’s here to play with the team and is ready for all the games,” Tamim told the media today.
“I discussed normal cricket related matters with him [Shakib]. Shakib is waiting for tomorrow’s match and wants to perform. Just as I want to perform tomorrow, so do the rest of the team members.”
The Tigers skipper backs the experience in his squad and appears confident to face the challenges in store.
“I wouldn’t call this series difficult but of course it will be challenging, as I’ve said before. We have to be ready for that challenge,” he said.
“With the exception of one or two in this team, we all have the experience of playing 40-50 or more ODIs. So everyone is well aware of their responsibilities.
“I think the most important thing is how prepared we are to tackle the challenge.”

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan went unsold on Sunday, this time from the unsold players’ list, during the second day’s bid of the two-day IPL auction in Bengaluru today.
Shakib, 33, with a highest base price of INR 20 million (US$266,000 approx), went unsold on the day one as no one showed the interest for him.
According to the IPL auction rules, each franchise can submit 5 to 7 names of players they would still like to bid for including the unsold players. Since some of the teams were still short of required players to fulfill their quota, Shakib’s name went under hammer again but to his dismay, no one showed interest again.
Shakib was expected to get a team after his superlative performance in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) where he was adjudged man of the match for the five straight matches. No other player could be the man of the match for five times in a row in the T20 tournament in any part of the world.
Shakib has so far played in 71 IPL matches, scoring 793 runs and bagging 63 wickets. The all-rounder’s name was registered for the first time in the IPL in 2009 but had no takers. National commitments saw him make himself unavailable in the 2013 edition of the tournament while he could not take part in the 2020 edition of the tournament due to a ICC ban.
Ace Bangladesh left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman was roped in by Delhi Capitals for the base price of two crore rupees yesterday. The names of three other representatives from Bangladesh in Liton Das, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam did not come up in the auctions as no franchises had named them in their list.

Never have the Tigers successfully managed to win a series against a side ranked in the top eight after losing the first match. And while they have beaten the Proteas once, they have never beaten them in a series.
However, the hosts will have a chance to change all those disillusioning stats and script a new chapter when they take on South Africa in the third and final ODI at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong today.
It therefore, wasn’t a surprise when ace-allrounder Shakib Al Hasan yesterday described the challenge in store as a ‘big opportunity’.
“We want to win whenever we get on the field. Sometimes it goes according to plan, sometimes it doesn’t. But because this is the series decider, it is more important.
“We haven’t lost [a series] at home for a long time and this will be an opportunity for us. I can’t tell you how big this match is, but I can surely say that this is a very big opportunity for us,” said Shakib during a pre-match press conference.
“This is big, no doubt. Whenever you go on to achieve something that you haven’t, that will always be big. We have never beaten South Africa in a series, so it will be a good achievement if we succeed,” he added.
As the statistics go on to show, it is not very common for Bangladesh to come from behind and win a series. The only Test team that they have managed to achieve that against is Zimbabwe. As a result, it puts the hosts in a slightly unusual scenario.
Shakib though brushed aside any talks related to the building of pressure because of this situation.
“It won’t be an extra pressure, nor will it motivate us. We always think about winning two matches at the start of the series and now we just have to win one more.
“Our confidence levels don’t plummet or go sky high if we lose or win a match. No player thinks that way. I am sure that if we stick to our process, then we can be successful,” explained Shakib.
On a personal note, the left-hander expressed his satisfaction over the way he bowled in the last ODI. While he didn’t take a wicket, he finished with miserly figures of 0 for 30 in ten overs.
“I think I bowled quite well after a long time in the last match. Personally, I was satisfied. I bowled the way I wanted to. Yes, if you get rewards [wickets] then you feel better, but I am not that disappointed regarding those things. I am happy as long as I can contribute to my team,” said Shakib.
“I don’t think I have changed much [bowling action]. The opposing batsmen don’t charge me as much as before. So, in the one-dayers it’s difficult to get wickets unless you have a supportive pitch,” he added.

Ace Bangladesh cricketer Sakib al Hasan was dethroned as the number one all-rounder in one-day internationals in the aftermath of his ordinary displays with both bat and ball in the just-concluded three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Sakib lost top position to Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan in the latest Reliance International Cricket Council rankings, released on Thursday.
Sakib slipped to second place after going through a poor series by his own standards.
The Magura lad could accumulate only 53 runs at an average of 17.66 while his bowling performances also contributed to his downfall as he could grab just one wicket, that too at a whopping average of 112.
To make matters worse, Sakib was dispatched for 5.33 runs per over, an economy rate which was one of the worst figures of the series by a Bangladeshi bowler, with only Shafiul Islam conceding more runs an over among the regular bowlers.
The 26-year-old all-rounder had faced Zimbabwe in a one-day series for the first time in 2006. In that series, Sakib played a single one-dayer scoring 30 runs and claiming one wicket at an average of 39.
Including that series, Bangladesh clashed with Zimbabwe in ODI series on nine occasions. Since that series seven years ago, Sakib never recorded batting averages below 30 or his bowling averages never crossed 40 in a bilateral one-day series against their South African opponents.
Sakib’s recent injury lay-offs might be the reason behind his current downturns. After the conclusion of the 2nd Bangladesh Premier League a couple of months ago, he decided to undergo surgery on his calf muscle which ruled him of the entire tour of Sri Lanka in March.
Even after making a comeback on the tour of Zimbabwe, he was not deemed completely fit due to which he only bowled 16 overs without any success in the first of the two-match Test series.
Sakib registered scores of 1, 34 and 18 in the ODI series, although luck deserted him in the first two matches. He was run-out after a horrible misunderstanding with Mominul Haque in the first one-dayer while he was the victim of an unfortunate umpiring error in the second ODI.
Bangladesh can only hope their mercurial all-rounder roars back to form sooner rather than later which will also remarkably change the fortunes of the team that once again suffered the ignominy of yet another ODI series defeat against their long-time rivals.

Leicestershire have added Sakib al Hasan, the Bangladesh all-rounder, to their roster for the Friends Life t20 tournament in a move which earmarks the tournament as their biggest priority of the season.
A young Leicestershire squad is expected to struggle over a long Championship season in Division Two, but the county has T20 pedigree – reaching the Champions League in 2011 – and it is in the shortest form of the game where it seems most committed to making an impact.
Sakib was recently named the No 1 all-rounder in the ICC Player rankings in ODIs and is also second in the Test match list and seventh in the T20I standings.
He has been out of international cricket since November last year with a stress fracture on his shin. but he is confident that he will be fit for Bangladesh’s forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe
He will play alongside Joe Burns, the Australia A batsman, during a tournament which Leicestershire hope will rouse the spirits of players and accountants alike.
Phil Whitticase, Leicestershire’s coach, said: ‘I’m really pleased that we have been able to sign a player
who was recently ranked the best one-day player in the world. Sakib’s record is exceptional and I am
looking forward to him helping us to achieve success.’
Chief Executive Mike Siddall added: ‘We are delighted to sign a player of Sakib’s experience and calibre. He has an excellent T20 record and I am looking forward to seeing him team up with Joe Burns.’
Sakib will be known to at least one Leicestershire player. He was a team-mate of Josh Cobb’s at Dhaka Gladiators, the winners of the Bangladesh Premier League.

Bangladesh’s Sakib al Hasan was dethroned from his number one spot in the Reliance International Cricket Council’s Test all-rounder ranking by South African Jacques Kallis, said an ICC press note releasing the latest ranking on Wednesday.
Former Bangladesh captain Sakib reached a new height in his thriving career when he became the number one Test all-rounder in the ICC rankings after his superb performance against Pakistan in the second Test in Dhaka and held the position since December 17, 2011.
His feat of scoring a century and taking a five-for in the same Test match made him the first Bangladeshi cricketer to take the top positions as an all-rounder in both the Test and one-day rankings.
Though Sakib recently regained his top spot in the ICC ODI all-rounder ranking, the ace Bangladeshi cricketer failed to cling on to the number one spot in five-day format of the game which he considered as one of his crowning moments so far in his stellar career.
Sakib, who earned 404 ranking points to climb to the top of the ladder, is currently in second position with 371 points, exactly three points less than the mercurial South African all-rounder Kallis, who was always breathing down his neck in recent times.
The duo had been fighting for the accolade since Sakib’s inception at the top in the longer-version of the game, regarded as the ultimate testing ground for any cricketer.
Sakib, who is recovering from an operation on his calf muscle, missed the opportunity of taking part in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka and is expected to make a comeback in the forthcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe starting on April 17.
His last international appearance came against the West Indies at home in December 2012 where he injured himself in the second Test match and since then he was sidelined from performing his national duties.

Bangladesh is likely to miss the services of Sakib al Hasan in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe after his latest scan report
showed he has had a rare neuromuscular disorder induced by exercise.
The BCB took Sakib for a scan and diagnosis on Thursday after he complained of his discomfort with his old injury that forced him out the recent one-day series against West Indies.
The report said Sakib has developed an Exertional Compartment Syndrome, an uncommon exercise-induced neuromuscular disorder, which the BCB physiotherapists said could take months to recover.
‘We will decide on his future tomorrow [Friday] after discussing it with the selectors as he needs controlled participation in sports,’ said Debashish Chowdhury, a BCB physio.
‘He has got exertion participation syndrome and two-three minor injuries along with the stress reaction that he was carrying,’ he said.
Debashish indicated that he might not be available for the Test matches in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and could be available only for the one-dayers.

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out of Dhaka Gladiators’ last two games in Chittagong.
The Tigers all-rounder, who trained with his Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Dhaka Gladiators yesterday, is fit to play the today’s match against Rangpur Riders at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, but the BCB’s sports physician Debashish Chowdhury said that it would be nice if the all-rounder returned to action after getting the report of the bone scan.
“He can play the match if he wishes as he has fully recovered from the hamstring injury but we want to be a hundred per cent sure about his old shin bone injury. We are reviewing everything because Shakib is complaining about the shin bone problem. We want to be very careful because the Sri Lanka tour is knocking on the door. A bone scan will be held tomorrow and we can be clear about everything after getting the report,” said Debashish.
Shakib Al Hasan had missed the one-day series against West Indies in November-December last year after being diagnosed with a shin injury.

Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has refused an offer to play for the Adelaide Strikers in Australia’s Big Bash League, said the Bangladesh fielding coach and Shakib’s mentor Mohammad Salahuddin while speaking to The Daily Star yesterday. The offer was made by the team’s coach Darren Berry, who sent Shakib a text message asking the left-hander if he would be available.
Shakib however denied the offer as he is still going through a rehabilitation programme to recover from a shin injury. The all-rounder, who attended gym sessions and various physical training activities throughout the last week, was seen batting at the indoor stadium yesterday. “He looked okay during practice. He batted only against spinners today. Tomorrow he’ll be facing medium-pacers. It’s a step-by-step process,” said Salahuddin.
