Taskin Ahmed ran rampant with the ball while Tamim Iqbal hit a brilliant fifty as Bangladesh sealed an historic series triumph with a nine-wicket win in the third one-day international against South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday.
Taskin took 5-35 as South Africa were bowled out for 154, their lowest total against Bangladesh.
Visiting captain Tamim then scored 87 not out off 82 balls to take Bangladesh to victory with 23.3 overs to spare, sharing a century opening partnership with Liton Das (48).
Bangladesh won the World Cup Super League series by 2-1, consolidating their place at the top of the table.
South Africa were left languishing in ninth place and in danger of missing one of the eight automatic qualifying places for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Bangladesh had lost all 19 matches across all formats against South Africa on their home soil before winning the series opener by 38 runs at the same venue on Friday.
South Africa won the second match by seven wickets in Johannesburg but Bangladesh dominated Wednesday’s series decider.
South Africa made a fast start, with Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock putting on 46 for the first wicket inside seven overs.
But Taskin bowled superbly after off-spinner Mehidy Hasan made the first breakthrough by dismissing De Kock.
Taskin, 26, produced his best performance since taking five for 28 on debut against India on debut at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur in 2014.
He bowled at a lively pace in three spells and troubled all the batsmen.
With South Africa defending a low total, Keshav Maharaj dropped Liton Das at backward point off Kagiso Rabada in the first over of the Bangladesh innings before Liton had scored.
Liton and Tamim took full advantage of the let-off, putting on 127 for the first wicket.

Inspired by a concerted batting effort from the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal and Yasir Ali, Bangladesh secured a 38-run victory over South Africa in the first ODI in Centurion today.
The convincing win at the SuperSport Park, that helped Bangladesh take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, was also the Tigers’ maiden win away to South Africa in any format. Before this win, Bangladesh lost all the nine ODIs, six Tests and four T20Is played against South Africa in their backyard.
After fifties from Shakib, Yasir, Liton and a 41-run knock from skipper Tamim saw Bangladesh post a mammoth 314 for seven — their highest total in South Africa — spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz and pacer Taskin Ahmed shone with the ball to bundle out the hosts for 276 in 48.5 overs despite fifties from Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller.
Defending a mammoth total, pacers Shoriful Islam and Taskin ensured the Tigers get a bright start with the ball in hand. With Shoriful providing the first breakthrough by removing opener Janneman Malan in the fourth over and Taskin following it up with wickets of Kyle Verreynne and Aiden Markram in the ninth over, South Africa were left reeling at 36 for three.
But the hosts consolidated through two consecutive daunting partnerships — an 85-run fourth-wicket stand between Van der Dussen and skipper Temba Bavuma and another quick-fire 70-run stand between Miller and Van der Dussen. In fact, at one point, South Africa were looking on course for achieving the target with Miller and Dussen smashing boundaries almost every over.
Miller looked more ominous as he smashed eight boundaries and three maximums during his 57-ball 79-run blitz.
It took a special effort from Yasir Ali in the outfield to stop the Miller-Dussen duo from taking the game away. Van der Dussen, well set on 86, moved to the off side and hit a Taskin delivery towards square leg in an attempt to clear the field. However, Yasir, running in from the deep, made a dive to his right and held on to a sharp catch.
Taskin claimed his third of the day with that wicket and ended with impressive figures of three for 36 in 10 overs that featured a maiden.
That effort from Yasir shifted the momentum back towards the Tigers with Miller the only remaining thorn on their way. The left-hander featured in brief stands with the tail-enders but eventually fell to Miraz in the 46th over. Miraz, despite leaking runs, ended with figures of four for 61 in nine overs.
Earlier, Bangladesh got off to a steady but impressive start after being asked to bat. Skipper Tamim scored 41 off 67 while Liton (50 off 67) brought up his third consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs as the duo starred in a 95-run opening stand to lay the foundation for the big total.
Shakib, who had traveled to South Africa after much fuss, was the most impressive one with the willow. The star all-rounder mesmerised the crowd with his strokeplay and shrewd batting approach during a quick-fire 64-ball 77, featuring seven boundaries and three maximums. He also starred in a 115-run fourth-wicket stand with Yasir Ali, who notched his maiden ODI fifty.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan sprang a surprise on Saturday stating that he would be available for the forthcoming series against South Africa despite the BCB permitted him a leave until April 30 from all forms of cricket.
‘I have been in a conversation with Papon Bhai [Nazmul Hasan] since the last three days where we could initiate our year-long plan. Since I have been roped in the three formats of cricket in the national contract, I will be available in all formats,’ Shakib told reporters on Saturday.
‘The board must decide when they will permit me to leave and that will start from the South Africa series therefore I will be available in the upcoming series.’
The ace all-rounder, who had a meeting with BCB president on Saturday, additionally informed that he will leave Dhaka for South Africa on Sunday night.
‘I will leave on tomorrow night for South Africa.’
Earlier on Thursday, BCB handed Shakib a break from all forms of cricket till April 30 as the all-rounder claimed that he was too exhausted to feature in Bangladesh’s forthcoming one-day international and Test series against South Africa.
However the BCB chief believes that having a hectic year ahead the players must need an interval for the betterment of cricket.
‘We sat with Shakib with our total plan. Bangladesh is scheduled to play fourteen ODIs, fifteen T20Is and eight Test matches and we need to understand that these are onerous to them the reason why I told them that they need a break occasionally,’ said Nazmul.
‘Since Shakib has told us that he is feeling mentally disturbed, we should be giving him our support. All the talk shows and discussions speculating about it are not good in that context. We have to stand beside someone when they are suffering mentally or physically. Do not speculate because that causes more problems.’

Hailed as one of the most consistent batsmen of the South African side, Amla was struggling since he made 159 off 168 balls against Ireland in the World Cup.

The left-arm spinner has now 10 wickets against South Africa bettering the record of fellow left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who has eight wickets.
150 When Tamim Iqbal took the field against South Africa in his home ground on Wednesday he became the sixth Bangladeshi to play 150 ODIs. Mohammd Ashraful, Sakib Al Hasan, Mashrafee bin Muratza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Abdur Razzak are the only players to reach the milestone before Tamim.

South Africa finally began to feel the heat in their Bangladesh tour as they go into the third and final one-dayer in Chittagong today hoping to avoid the ignominy of series loss.
The Proteas looked overwhelmingly favourites when the series began at the weekend until Bangladesh found a way to beat the side in the second match to change the scenario completely.
It was not just the win rather the manner in which it came that must have given Bangladesh their confidence back after Twenty20 drubbings, doubling the woes of the visiting side.
When they landed in Bangladesh the Proteas had said that they feared only two things in Bangladesh – the heat and the confidence of Bangladesh – and both will be at play in the third one-dayer.
Hosts have brought back the challenge for the visiting side and leg-spinner Imran Tahir said they are relishing it already.
‘We are a team that never steps back from any challenge,’ Tahir said after the training session in Chittagong on Tuesday. ‘So we are really looking forward to this challenge.’
Tahir claimed nothing has changed in their camp after the embarrassing loss when they were folded for 162 runs with four overs remaining and got thumped as Bangladesh chased the score down with 134 balls in hand.
‘All is going well in our camp,’ said the Pakistan-origin leg-spinner. ‘We are very happy people. But obviously when we get to the ground we always challenge for position, we always fight.
‘We never look back. We have got a good group of people. We are going to give our best. We are not worried about what happened in the last game or the game before.’
Chittagong is not a completely new venue to South Africa, who played their four group matches in the ICC World Twenty20 at the venue last year and won all but one.
From his experience in the World Twenty20, Tahir, who played a key role in South Africa’s ascension to the semi-final with 11 wickets from four group matches, said a total around 250 runs will be handy in the series decider.
‘I think anything over 200 is going to be a good score,’ said Tahir. ‘If you look at the way the pitch played in the last game, you can look for 300 as well, but it depends how you play in the middle overs.
‘For me I think 250 is going to be a good score.’
Tahir brushed aside the suggestion that a series loss to lower-ranked Bangladesh would be slanderous for his side.
‘We are not worried about it at all,’ he said. ‘If they play well, they are going to win it,’ he said.

Dhaka: The euphoria which gripped the country for the last one month is over now. Bangladesh are now a mere spectator of the cricket’s showcase event in their own den as they will hold two quarterfinal matches on March 23 and 25. Surroundings of Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) are beautifully lit up on the eve of the World Cup which is a sight to behold. Over the one month, for people it was a place to visit and to hang on with the family or friends. The nicely decorated stadium now turns to a desert land after Bangladesh’s departure from the mega event.
Expectation was sky high as everyone believed the Bangladesh are good enough to seal the quarterfinal berth given the home condition and their performance leading up to the World Cup. But that was not to be and the way they ended the mission was miserable. No one could blame the side is entirely failed to live up to the expectation. They targeted three wins including a big fish prey to move up to the knock-out phase and eventually they did so. If the Group B was not turned out to be a death or mysterious group, three wins could have been enough. But their meek surrender against West Indies and lastly South Africa made the whole journey awful. Certainly no one could expect, Bangladesh would be the lone Test nation to be all out below 100 in the cricket’s biggest extravaganza. Definitely no one could anticipate they would hit the new low with being all out for 58. On those occasions, no one could even explain what happened to the batters actually when the pitch was not unplayable at all.
The batsmen however never clicked in the World Cup. Only one occasion they could surpass 250 runs mark when they played the inaugural match against India. Even they were wrapped up for 205 runs against Ireland. Bangladesh could have been lost that match as well but a reverse-swing burst from Shafiul Islam and a massive roar from the stadium held off the Irish. A sheer confidence and bravery from Shafiul Islam and Mahmudullah Ryad in the late moment helped Bangladesh to win against England in Chittagong. But if dew did not affect the match, Graeme Swann could be more effective. When they should accelerate the run rate against Netherlands, surprisingly they showed an exhibition of sluggish cricket that irritated even a die-hard supporter. Only four batsmen – Imrul Kayes (188), Tamim Iqbal (157), Shakib Al Hasan (142) and Zunaed Siddique (114) could reach over hundred which was the evidence of the utter failure in batting. In the process the aspiration to have centurion in the World Cup remained unfulfilled.
Bangladesh experienced a disastrous World Cup journey in 2003 World Cup when they lost even to Canada. This time around, it was not such sort of miserable journey but obviously it was not happy ending. It is the time to rethink now. Rumors though are floating around in various forms. But certainly some important decisions will be made on March 26 Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Board of Directors meeting, confirmed a high ups of the board. The board however is waiting for the manager’s report on team. A thorough investigation will be made also for the disastrous batting. Probably the supporting staffs of Bangladesh including head coach Jamie Siddons could be sacked. But Siddons however got the green signal to start practice campaign for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, scheduled to start from April 9. Bangladesh will start their practice campaign for the series from March 29.

The Proteas proved far too strong for the Tigers who failed firstly to check South Africa’s run making and later to withstand their bowling attack, folding for only 78 and thus ending their Cricket World Cup dream at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.
South Africa secured its place at the top on the point table and among top eight moving into the next round with five wins. On the other hand, Bangladesh crashed out of the tournament failing to add points from the match, which was their last opportunity.
Tigers folded for 78 runs. Silence descended in the capital in the last ball of the 28th over when Peterson bowled Naeem Islam. Naeem 8 runs off 20 balls.
Earlier, South Africa skipper Graeme Smith had a dream opening when Tamim, their biggest worry, fell for only five runs in the fourth over. Tsotsobe’s third ball got some of Tamim’s bat sending a noise. As the loud appeal failed to convince the umpire, the fielders went for a review and got the decision for them. Tamim played 14 balls.
Imrul Kayes, who became player of the match in Bangladesh’s last two wins against Netherlands and England, also followed Tamim’s path at the hands of the same bowler, Tsotsobe. He mistook to judge the fourth ball of the sixth over and was astonished to see the bails in the air. His 15-ball inning earned him four runs.
Next wicket, Junaid Siddique, fell in the last ball of the next over. Johan Botha delivered a full-length around off hitting him in front of the stumps to trap him in a leg before. Junaid sought for a review only to be confirmed of the on-field umpire’s decision. He scored only 2 off 7 balls.
Tsotsobe hit again in the next over. His tricky delivery on the off-stump again trapped the batsman, Shahriar Nafees this time, getting an inside edge to dislodge the bails along its way. Nafees went back for five runs playing 12 balls, including a boundary.
Joining Mushfiqur, skipper Shakib Al Hasan made a desperate attempt for a partnership to give Bangladesh innings a footing. Both of them played cautiously without going for big hits.
South African skipper Graeme did not let that happen. He took a superb catch on the slip in the first ball of the 16th over to see Mushfiqur off. Peterson gave a flighted delivery around off to lure Mushfiqur for a push. The Bangladesh wicket-keeper-batsman played 21 balls to score three runs.
Bangladesh’s fight virtually fell apart in the 24th over when skipper Shakib Al Hasan fell. Shakib had a thick edge on Peterson’s fourth delivery, which was a slightly quicker one. Wicket-keeper Morne van wyk took it on the rebound.
Shakib scored 30 off 49 balls.
Shafiul, who joined Naeem Islam two balls later, went back two balls later. The flighted delivery on the leg stump took off the bails as Shafiul went for a sweep.
Taking to the crease, Razzak could face two balls before going back to the pavilion. Playing Imran Tahir a sweep in the last ball of 25th over, he sent the ball to Peterson at deep midwicket to go back for a duck.
Earlier, winning the toss, South African captain Graeme Smith elected to bat first.
Bangladesh bowlers succeeded to have some grip on the Proteas batsmen sending back eight of them to the pavilion but were too late to do that, giving the opponents enough time and chance to pile up 284 runs.
The Tigers with the ball proved too ordinary for the Proteas, who have already reserved their place for the quarterfinal by scoring eight points from five matches. Bangladesh must win the game to continue their World Cup campaign.
Pacer Rubel Hossain struck the South African batting line-up lately, picking up three wickets in his eight overs, though he conceded 56 runs, in the best bowling figure for Bangladesh bowlers in the match.
However, Tigers skipper Shakib Al Hasan earned the co-host the long expected breakthrough while Jacques Kallis was flexing his muscle scoring runs on all the directions.
Kallis and Faf du Plessis, who added 82 runs in the fourth partnership, was turning into a major threat for Bangladesh. Though he was slow to score at the beginning of his inning, Kallis turned devastating after reaching his 50. Shakib trapped him to lob a catch back to him in the third ball of the 45th over. Kallis scored 69 off 76 balls, including five boundaries and an over-boundary.
Shakib hit again in the fourth ball of his next over, bowling out this time Morne van Wyk for five runs of as many balls.
du Plessis was turning dangerous for the Tigers, as he scored 52 runs off as many balls. Pacer Rubel had an eye on him and gave him a full toss, forcing him to give a catch to Tamim at the mid-off in the 48th over.
Rubel gave the local crowd an occasion to celebrate in the first ball of the 50th over removing Botha. When Robin Peterson dug out the ball, Botha rushed out to take a single but Peterson sent him back. Collecting the ball, Rubel threw that at his end and Botha went back for 12 runs of six balls.
Wayne Parnell was the last man for the South African to go back in the same over. Parnell tried to punch the good length ball past midwicket but missed it to see it crashing into the stumps. He went back for a duck.
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Shahriar Nafees, Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Abdur Razzak, Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hossain.
South Africa: Graeme Smith (Captain), Hashim Amla, Morne van Wyk, Jacques Kallis, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Johan Botha, Robin Peterson, Wayne Parnell, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Imran Tahir.

Tigers face SA today
Prior to today’s crunch Bangladesh-South Africa match, the question on everybody’s lips was what awaited the millions of cricket crazy fans in the country? Will it be heartbreak or will today usher in an era of hope?
Shakib Al Hasan’s men can write a new chapter for Bangladesh cricket when they face off against an inform South Africa in a make or break battle at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. But for each and every single person their feelings have oscillated between hope and hopelessness as regards the outcome of the match which has turned into a do-or-die clash for Bangladesh after the West Indies crumpled against England on Thursday.
If someone take the result of the last two matches and the spirited display of the Tigers and of course the advantage of the home conditions, he or she will definitely be looking at something positive. And if they do manage to come out on top it will be a pinnacle in achievement for the Tigers.
But the pressure would be absolutely on the Tigers because only a win in the day match will take them to the quarterfinals from Group B, the group of death in the ICC Cricket World Cup, and anything else will mean that the World Cup will be over for the Bangladesh team and as well as millions of fans.
On the contrary there is virtually no pressure on the South Africa team and they were found in a relaxed mood while practicing at Mirpur yesterday. They have already confirmed their quarterfinals berth and a win will only keep their supremacy intact.
South Africa is one of the favourites in the tournament, especially their bowling attack has lot of variety, which can exploit any conditions but still Shakib’s men can say that no team is unbeatable and anything can happen in cricket: a fact they have proved time and again. The on paper favourite does not always win the matches which Bangladesh team has also proved in the tournament by beating the mighty England at Chittagong.
It’s not only that someone plays with emotion versus reality but the fact is also that Bangladesh has a sweet memory of a 67-run victory over the same opponents four years back in the second round of the 2007 World Cup in Guyana..
Thus Shakib’s men not only can take the inspiration from their last two back-to-back victories against England and Netherlands but they can also take it from their great victory in the last World Cup.
Like the 2007 game, Bangladesh have pinned their hopes on the slow bowlers this time also and what will be required is an innings like Mohammad Ashraful’s, who hit 87 in Guyana in 2007. He will not feature today even as Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan said that everybody has to play their part to win.
“It’s not as if only Tamim and myself can fire, rather everybody must contribute if we want to win the match,” said Shakib.
Pointing out that the spinners squeezed them in 2007, South African skipper Graeme Smith said that they were more careful this time. “We’ve had a good look at Bangladesh. They’ve averaged 40-42 overs of spin in a game so we expect to face a lot of spin tomorrow. They also have seven left-handers in their team so we’d also look at that and see how we can benefit,” said Smith.
