Retired Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan wants his former team-mate Hashan Tillakaratne to either furnish proof of match-fixing by the country’s cricketers or stop making such allegations as he might just end up being sued.
“I don’t know why he has said this. If somebody is making such claims, he should first give enough proof to support them, otherwise someone can sue him,” Muralitharan told ‘PTI Bhasha’
At a television chat show last week, Tillakaratne said match-fixing existed in Sri Lankan cricket since 1992 and that he would reveal the names soon. He also expressed reservations about the team selection for the 2011 World Cup.
On being asked whether he had been approached by any bookie during his 18—year career, Muralitharan said he had never been contacted by a fixer.
“In any case, I will tell this to the ICC’s anti corruption unit only. There is a code and all the players follow that,” said the veteran, who plays for IPL debutant Kochi Tuskars Kerala.
He also rejected suggestions that Tillakaratne’s allegations have tarnished the image of Sri Lankan cricket.
“Hashan has made allegations and only he is answerable for that. I don’t know what to say. These are mere allegations which have not been proved yet,” he said.

Former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne said on Tuesday he was ready to share information on alleged match-fixing with the International Cricket Council, the game’s world governing body.
Tillakaratne, now an opposition politician, said he will name those involved in match-fixing to ICC officials, after claiming last week that Sri Lanka players had been fixing matches since 1992.
“I made the statements (about match-fixing) neither to get political mileage nor to put anyone in an awkward position,” he told reporters a day after a police inquiry was ordered into his allegations.
“I made the comments in good faith and I will share the information with the ICC. The exercise was meant to protect the game and the players we all love so much.”
Tillakaratne, who played 83 Tests and 200 one-dayers during a 15-year career, added that he had kept quiet for so many years as he feared for his life.
Hours after speaking to reporters, Tillakaratne was asked to appear before the police Criminal Investigation Department late Tuesday.
“We want to record his statement as part of our investigations into his claims that certain cricket matches were fixed,” police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody told AFP.
Tillakaratne’s allegations have raised a storm, with former skipper Kumar Sangakkara challenging him to prove his claims.
“It’s interesting to see what he has to say and if he has anything more than allegations,” said Sangakkara, who quit as captain after Sri Lanka’s defeat to India in the World Cup final. “It’s dangerous to throw names around.”

Former Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillekaratne will be making a special statement tomorrow at the Western Province Provincial Council regarding the match fixing allegations made by him.
The former Sri Lanka cricket captain Hashan Tillekaratne made a sensational revelation that match fixing has been common in Sri Lanka’s cricket and promised that he would come out with the names of the responsible persons in the near future.
Tillkaratne who led Sri Lanka in Ten Tests between 2003 and 2004 said that he could vouch with responsibility that Match fixing has been a problem in Sri Lanka’s cricket since 1992.
“I can tell this in agreement with my conscience. Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. According to my knowledge, it happened since 1992. I say this with great responsibility” said Tillekaratne who played 83 Tests and 200 One Day Internationals for Sri Lanka between 1986 and 2004.
“I am not saying that this match (The world cup final) was fixed. But anyway match fixing is something which has been in this country over a period of time. This has spread like a cancer today” Tillekaratne who has been a life member of the prestigious MCC since 2008 explained.
Meanwhile former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara stated that Hashan Tillekaratne should work with the ACSU unit of the ICC and other authorities in Sri Lanka if he has “anything more than allegations, as it’s dangerous to throw names around.” (Daily Mirror online)

Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara reacting sharply to Hashan Tillakaratne’s allegation that Sri Lankan players have been fixing matches since 1992, said instead of throwing names around, the ex-player should work with the ICC’s anti-corruption unit to rout out the menace if it is there.
Speaking in the post match media conference after his IPL side Deccan Chargers’ 19-run loss to Chennai Super Kings, the Deccan Chargers captain has said: “Hashan has played the game for years and he’s captained Sri Lanka as well. So it’s interesting to see what he has to say and if he has anything more than allegations.”
“It’s dangerous to throw names around, he should work very closely with the ACSU of the ICC and the home authorities to ensure that something’s done about it if there is any foundation to those claims but beyond that I don’t think it makes any big sense to the players playing now,” said Sangakkara who quit as Sri Lanka after the World Cup final.
Tillakaratne claimed that match fixing has been a widespread practice in Sri Lankan cricket since 1992 and questioned the changes made for the World Cup final against India.
Earlier, another former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena challenged his one-time teammate Tillakaratne to come out with proof that match-fixing has been prevalent in cricket since 1992.
“People can say whatever they want. You need to prove the allegations,” Jayawardena told reporters on on Friday.
Jayawardena, who leads Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the Indian Premier League, refused to get into the details of the allegations saying that it is Tillakaratne who first needs to come out with substantial evidence of any kind of wrongdoing.
“I have no comments. Honestly, I just saw the news. We will have to wait and see what he has to say and what he has to come out with to be honest with you, no comments till then,” he was quoted as telling in the Indian media.
Tillakaratne, a former Sri Lankan captain, made the comments on a Sinhala-language television talk show in Sri Lanka last week.
“Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. This has been happening since 1992 and I know all the people who are connected to it,” Tillekaratne told the talk show promising to reveal the name of the suspects “shortly”.
“I am not saying that this match (the World Cup final) was fixed but why were four players changed for this match? Why was Mendis (Ajantha) removed to put another spinner, Kapugedara (Chamara) was never among runs but he was chosen to replace Chamara Silva. It is not fair, is it?,” said Tillakaratne, who represented Sri Lanka in 83 Tests and 200 one-day Internationals.
