Saqlain may return, no decision on local assistant coach, six-players told to take proper rest before SL series
Bowling coach Shane Jurgensen was confirmed as the new head coach of the Bangladesh cricket team for one year, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Saturday.
The decision was made at a meeting of the cricket operations committee and will be effective after an approval from the BCB’s ad-hoc executive body.
Jurgensen, who was appointed as the interim coach after Englishman Richard Pybus refused to continue in his job due to a contract dispute last year, successfully guided Bangladesh to a 3-2 one-day series win against West Indies in December.
The BCB had floated an advertisement for the position of a permanent head coach and received a few applications too, but the officials said they found no-one better than the Australian trainer.
‘We had several candidates for the position of head coach. But there was no one better than Jurgensen, who had also applied for the post,’ Jalal Yunus, chairman of the BCB media committee, told reporters.
‘So we decided to appoint him as head coach up to December 2013.’ Jurgensen’s first assignment as head coach will be a visit to Sri Lanka, where Bangladesh will play two Tests, three one-day internationals and a T20 match in March.
Yunus said they are also in talks with an Australian and an Englishman for the posts of batting coach and fielding coach respectively, though he refused to name them.
‘At the moment we are trying to confirm their appointment before the Sri Lanka tour. But for some reasons I cannot disclose their names,’ said Yunus.
The BCB official added that former Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq may also return to the coaching staff provided he agrees to the schedule.
‘Saqlain told us he will be available for a maximum of 100 days in a year. We are now trying to sort out when we actually need his services. If everything goes according to plan, he can also join us,’ said Yunus.
Saqlain worked as the spin bowling coach of Bangladesh from August to December last year.
The cricket operations committee decided to promote National Cricket Academy trainer Stuart Karppinen to the national team as replacement for South African Grant Luden, who had left after the West Indies series.
There was, however, no decision about the local assistant coach as several candidates expressed their interest.
The BCB had earlier said it was considering two former national captains, Aminul Islam and Khaled Mahmud, for the job, but it has now changed its position.
‘The decision is final that we will appoint a local assistant coach. Firstly, we had very limited choices. But few other candidates have also expressed their interest now. So we decided to place an advertisement for the post,’ Yunus said after the cricket operations committee meeting.
The three national selectors along with physiotherapist Vibhab Singh also attended the cricket operations committee meeting.
Singh informed the officials that at least six cricketers – Sakib al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Ziaur Rahman and Mashrafee bin Murtaza – are carrying some niggles but all of them should be available for the Sri Lanka tour.
It was decided that the physio will ask the Bangladesh Premier League franchises to ensure proper rest for the players so that they stay fit for the Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe tours, which will be held in March-April.
‘Selectors want the players to be fully fit for the series and available for both Tests and ODIs. If some one is deemed unfit, he will not be considered for either of the series,’ said Yunus.

The Bangladesh cricket team’s new head coach Richard Pybus arrived yesterday to take over the reins of the Tigers for the next two years.
Pybus arrived in the capital within three days of being confirmed as the new Bangladesh coach for a two-year term to spend some time with his charges before the Zimbabwe tour, which will be his first assignment.
The 47-year old Englishman told the reporters upon his arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport that he is excited to take on the new challenge. He also said that his main target would be to ensure that the Tigers maintain their consistency in performance.
Pybus, who last coached a national team in Pakistan in 2003, also said that he will let the press know in detail about his plans and visions after putting pen to paper.
The Tigers will leave on June 12 for Harare to play an unofficial tri-nation tournament with Zimbabwe and South Africa being the other teams.
His first major assignment is the ICC Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka in September, but before that he will get enough opportunities to prepare the team as after the Zimbabwe trip, Bangladesh are scheduled to play T20 matches in Trinidad & Tobago, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Pybus is Bangladesh’s third coach in a year as Stuart Law, who resigned in April due to family commitments, had been in the post for only nine months after succeeding another Australian, Jamie Siddons, last July.

Englishman Richard Pybus finally agreed to join as the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team after the Bangladesh Cricket Board revised his financial offer, said the officials on Wednesday.
Pybus’ consent came about an hour after mid-day on Wednesday, ending a long wait for the BCB, who were looking for it since his visit to Bangladesh earlier this month.
The BCB had offered Pybus a little over $16,000 per month excluding taxes, but the coach was asking for more, close to $20,000, which had created a kind of stalemate in the negotiations.
With the other contender for the job Mick Newell pulling out of the race and the BCB’s lack of enthusiasm about Mark Greatbach and Kepler Wessels made Pybus an obvious choice.
‘It’s a win-win situation for us,’ said Jalal Yunus, the official spokesman for the BCB. ‘We are happy to get his confirmation and I am sure Richard is also feeling the same way.’
Pybus will replace Australian Stuart Law, who stepped down in April citing family reasons after nine months in charge.
The BCB had initially said Pybus will be given a two-year contract with an option of further extension up to the World Cup in 2015.
‘The 47-year-old England-born coach has agreed a two-year deal with the Bangladesh Cricket Board and is expected to join the Tigers ahead of their tour of Zimbabwe for the Tri-Nation T20 tournament next month,’ said a BCB statement.
Pybus, born and raised in England, is currently settled in Cape Town, South Africa, where he had been in charge of Cape Cobras until March this year.
His coaching experience includes a stint with Titans between 1999 and 2001, while he also coached English county side Middlesex in 2003.
An illustrious coach, Pybus, however, had a very insignificant playing career, which was cut short by injury. He played only one List A match in which he scored four runs and could not take any wicket.
Pybus, the only foreign coach to have been appointed by Bangladesh without any experience of international cricket, said he is excited about the new challenge.
‘I am delighted at the opportunity of coaching Bangladesh. I am looking forward to getting busy with the boys,’ the BCB statement quoted him as saying.
‘We have an active schedule ahead of us and for me the next few months will be about building relationships with the players and the coaching staff and ensuring that the progress made up to the Asia Cup continues.’

Few deadlines passed by one after another, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board could not resolve the Richard Pybus riddle as the South African is yet to confirm his approval for the post of the national cricket team head coach.
The never ending wait continued for Pybus, who was approached by the BCB for taking charge of the Tigers after the post got vacated when Australian Stuart Law resigned citing family reasons after the Asia Cup.
The same family reason has now remained as the only stumbling block for Pybus to join the Bangladesh national team as media committee chairman of BCB said that he had agreed to financial terms.
‘From what I have heard I can tell you that he had agreed to our offer and now the only thing that he is considering is his family,’ Jalal Yunus told reporters on Tuesday.
‘For someone to come here for a long time there are certain things that he needs to take care off such as the children and their schooling and he is probably considering that before taking his decision,’ said Jalal.
‘Apart from that we have not given him any deadline, but we are hoping to get a result within this month,’ added Jalal.
It was reported that Pybus has demanded $20,000 per month excluding all taxes, an amount which was quite heavy for BCB, who paid Law $14,000 per month barring taxes.
The BCB decided to increase the amount to a maximum of 15 per cent for Pybus, who was told to agree or quit the race.
Board president AHM Mustafa Kamal, who returned from India after a short visit on Tuesday, said that he is still waiting for Pybus’ answer and claimed to have been in regular touch with him.
Kamal was, however, very disappointed with the media regarding the coach’s issue and said that their over enthusiasm might have to make the Board pay.
‘It’s not right to say anything about coaches unless the dotted paper is signed,’ said Kamal.
‘It is bad for both the parties if we talk too much about it. In that case we are very unlikely to get a coach,’ he added.
‘More so it is embarrassing for me because Pybus is having a bad impression about the Board as every slight information is been leaked out,’ said Kamal.
‘Unless he says no, we cannot talk with other coaches,’ said Kamal.
The BCB president refused to say if he had met any prospective candidates in India during his visit for the Indian Premier League final.
Kamal was accompanied by some top BCB officials including acting chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury and was supposed to hold several meetings on crucial issues.
Both Kamal and Chowdhury on their return told reporters that they have no big news to offer, which only suggested that BCB’s wait for a national coach may linger further.
